dit Article How to Take Care of a Dog Edited by Akira, Choicefresh, Emishca, Codelyoko678 and 79 others This is a step-by-step basic overview guide to taking care of any dog, and could come in handy! More detailed articles on each of the topics covered below can b e found in the Dogs category of wikiHow. EditSteps 1First, let your dog out of its sleeping crate. Crates are good uses for beds, w hen you leave the house, and when they're naughty. Give them some affection to s how that you love them. Don't force it if it barks or pulls away; take a break a nd try again later, and if it pulls away don't put it back in its crate. Skip this step if your dog is not a puppy. (2 years or older)

2Feed your dog breakfast. Like people, dog want some too. You can find pet bowls and pet food at your local pet store. If your dog has NOT had all its teeth com e in, you might want to consider buying canned food or wetting the food with wat er until they all have come in. (Give water in the dogs food if your dog doesn't drink as much. They are guaranteed to drink that water as it tastes like its fo od.) Teach your dog manners by having them use the command sit before feeding th em. Once they have sat for five seconds, give them their food.Keep them sitting while the food is being put on the ground and say ok before they are allowed to eat the food. 3Give your dog a walk. Dogs enjoy being outside to smell new smells, see new sig hts, and simply to walk. Start by buying a 6 foot leash and some poop bags. You can find these at your local pet store. Have the dog to the left of you and let about a 4-5" slack on the leash. To run or jog, hold on to the edge of the leash and run, letting your dog be in front of you. If you don't do that, the dog may run into the street and get hit by a driving car not just leading to death, but painful tears. As puppies keep the dogs closer to you to prevent later pulling and straining on the leash. 4Take your dog home and play with it by throwing a ball. If your dog ever partic ipates in hunting, like a German Short-haired pointer, do not play games like tu g-of-war. If your dog gets a bird and you try to take it, it may turn to tug-ofwar.Have the dog sit when you take the toy out of it's mouth to prevent this tug -of-war. 5Feed them. (Puppy) Feed your dog until it is full. Be careful though. Puppies meant n the wild or hunting will eat more then they need and turn it into fat. (Adult) Feed your dog 2 cups of food. this varies from dog to dog. Those ving in cities with little outside play need less then dogs in wide open The size of your dog matters too, if it is a 15 pound dog it needs less en a 115 pound dog. to be i dogs li spaces. food th

6Leave your dog in its dog house when it's time for you to go to bed. Lock your dog in its crate! Leave a small bowl of water where it can reach it at night. Sm all enough that if it spills it doesn't ruin the crate but big enough that the d og can get a drink, even dogs get thirsty at night. As a puppy many dogs need to go out at night, so keep the dog close enough to you that you can hear its bark ing. Another reason to keep it close is so it feels like part of the family. If you don't keep it close it can be scared of every little thing as it feels it ha s no protection. EditVideo

EditTips Always praise your dog if they obey your command. Stroke them and say "Good Dog! ". They will like the attention and want more. Dogs will love you forever if you treat them correctly. Whatever you do, NEVER h it your dog or abuse him/her in any way. Also, never taunt him/her as it will fr ustrate them and they will begin to dislike you. The worst punishment for a dog is being yelled at after the deed is over and done. They forget and don't unders tand what they are being yelled at for. When you punish be sure to do it immedia tely, without any waiting. Reward them each time they obey your command. Use small treats and remember not to over feed your dog. Pay attention to your dog. If they suddenly start whining all the time, stop eat ing or any other bizarre behaviour, then go to the vet immediately. Always brush your dog because of fleas and loose hair. When dogs are good and/or they obey you give them a treat, but no more then one a nd not constantly. This will make them think it's an ordinary part of the routine , and it will no longer be seen as a treat. Do your best not to talk to dogs in a high-pitched voice when congratulating them. Also, stroke their fur from their head to tail, not vise-versa as this will irritate them. Make sure the commands aren't too similar as your dog may get confused. eg. Sit Down and Lie Down. Try Sit and Down as they are more common and know by most any one. When dogs are good, give them a treat. Don't give them more than one, because th en they will expect you to give them treats more often. When the treats are out and they're being a good dog, say "good dog" (but not in a squeaky voice) and be sure to stroke their fur. EditWarnings Don't jump on a dog for every little thing they do. When a puppy reward for good behavior but as they get older still say good dog but don't bombard with treats and toys as soon as they sit.
