Temperature rise
Extremely critical to busway, especially sandwich type high temp rise results in insulation material (whatever kinds) under heavy loads, hence deterioration of service life. Poorer electrical performance. Not Energy Efficient Difference of requirement of UL857 and IEC60439, applicable to whole busway system incl. Straights, elbows, flanges, tap-off units

High Power II-Line II

Insulation Advantages of Mylar from Dupont (UL listed)
Quality and performance guaranteed by BOTH Square D and Dupont Excellent dielectric performance. For one layer of 7.5 mil it is 20.5 KV 2 layers along entire length, 4 layers between phases Totally sealed across entire length and no air gap or ingress of water can take place Class B insulation, 130C (Class F 155C optional) 7500V DC testing is done for 10s on each piece of busway before ex-factory Over 40 years of installations still in use (full loading, 24/7/365) Environment friendly as compared to other insulation as bars can be reused Insulation not a function of application

High Power II-Line II

Insulation Advantages of Mylar from Dupont (UL listed)

Mylar will burn under condition of: Surface temp = 300-600 C and flame temp = 500 1000 C. The ignition temp in air varies from 425 500 C depending inversely on the rate of heating. Regarding IEC 60439-2, temp at conductor is about 110 C

TECHNICAL COMPARISON BETWEEN MYLAR AND EPOXY INSULATIONS

MYLAR INSULATION NATURE : polyester film (DuPont) Class B 130C Thickness : 2 to 4 layers of 7.5 mils* each (1 mil = 25.3 mm) Dielectric strenght : 2.7 kV/mil for 7.5mil thickness (15 mils total for 2 layers) Total breaking capacity : 40 kV for 2 layers of Mylar (81 kV for 4 layers of Mylar) Melt point : 254C EPOXY INSULATION NATURE : Epoxy Powder Class B 130C Thickness : around 30 mils* (1 mil = 25.3 mm) Dielectric strenght 0.9 kV/mil for 15 mil thickness Total breaking capacity : 13.5 kV

Melt point : usually under 200C Moreover, dielectric strenght of Mylar remains steady for various temperatures :

Dielectric strenght of Epoxy have very little variation vs humidity, but Mylar performances remain much higher than Epoxy even in very humid atmosphere :

Dielectric Strenght at Various Humidity

Dielectric Strenght (kV/mil) 3.5 3 2.5 2 1.5 1 0.5 0 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% 100% Relative Humidity (%) Epoxy (15 mil) Mylar (7.5 mil)

Insulation Disadvantages of Epoxy
Brand not known (most critical material for sandwich busway, c.f. Rolls Royce engine for aircraft Boeing / Airbus) 1 layer. Presence of pin hole is common for epoxy powder technology, covered one by one by PVC tapes Not recommended by IEC60439-2:
"7.4.2.1 Protection by insulation of live parts . NOTE Examples are electrical components embedded in insulation, cables. Paints, varnishes, lacquers and similar products alone are generally not considered to provide an adequate insulation for protection against electric shock in normal service. For sandwich type busway, there is no air between the conductors, meaning epoxy or mylar are used as a primary insulation. Since Epoxy belongs to the family mentioned in the "NOTE" of IEC60439, IEC recommends not to use this Schneider Electric uses a lot of epoxy for a lot of electrical equipment, but only as a secondary insulation (primary insulation can be air between conductors)

Special service conditions (on specification of an epoxy-pioneered busway manufacturer)

Jun 2009

Non recyclable, non environmentally friendly

37

Epoxy Coating Repair

Epoxy coating on busway fitting device. Typical repair method for epoxy.

Industry standard for epoxy application process used to coat busbars is 95% First Pass Yield. In other words, over 5% of the bars require patching. It is not uncommon to see 20% repair rate at various times of the year. It is often difficult to confirm and control the root cause of the defects.

Jun 2009

38

Conclusion of Mylar over Epoxy

-Mylar has higher voltage insulation level and melting point than Epoxy. - Epoxy will be thicker than Mylar to perform the same insulation level. -Mylar has lower humid absorption than epoxy. - The protection of IP is from the housing, not from the insulation. -Mylar has been installed in many types of applications(Transformer) and we have thousands of references of the same, which are still performing well. -The electrical specifications of the insulation of Epoxy and Mylar are the same. Both are Class B insulation. - Epoxy insulation on busway depends on manufacturing process and subject to a lot of variables( temprature of curing, consistency of thickness amongst a few) . A small pin hole or a weak point may lead to explosion when tracking over a period of time. - Mylar sheet has the quality controlled by Dupont for reliable performance.
Jun 2009 39

Polypropylene

-Polypropylene is the plastic polymer. -It is used in different setting especially consumer goods. -The melting point of Polypropylene is very high comparing with other plastic. The melting point = 160 C

Jun 2009

59

Brief explanation of the standard (see IEC 60439-2 for test procedure and full explanation)

8.2.9 - Verification of the resistance of insulating materials to abnormal heat and fire Purpose and importance of this test To verify the insulating material of busway will not burn or cause the burning when affected by abnormal heat or by fire with the degree of 9600C (the insulating material need to retain current-carrying parts) or 6500C(other than former material). Test arrangement Use glow-wire to approach the sample, the duration is 30 seconds. There shall be no obvious and continuous flame or the flame shall extinguish within 30 seconds when moving away the glowwire.
Jun 2009 60

Brief explanation of the standard (see IEC 60439-2 for test procedure and full explanation)

8.2.14 - Verification of resistance to flame-propagation Purpose and importance of this test To verify the resistance to flame propagation. The fire resistant busway helps to prevent the flame propagation and fire spread, save time for people to run away from the fire Test arrangement Three standard busbar trunking units of the same type are placed at regular intervals on a vertical ladder into a fire test rig; every busbar trunking shall present a different side orientation to the burner flame impact. After burning has ceased, the busbar trunking enclosures should be wiped clean. All soot is to be ignored if, when wiped off, the original surface is undamaged. If it does not ignite or the maximum extent of the charred portion (external or internal) of the busbar trunking has not reached a height exceeding 2.5m above the bottom edge of the burner, the system is deemed has having passed the test.

What is Copper Contact Busway?

Silver-plated Bi-metal plate cladding on Aluminum conductor through high current and high pressure. Special process enabling molecular fusion of Copper and Aluminum The outer contact surface of the connection plate is silver-plated copper, the inside surface is Aluminum. All of busway connection zone are silver to silver.

69

Green and Environmental friendly

RoHS compliant product, eliminate the use of hazardous substances and reduce the pollution
* RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive restricts the use of some hazardous materials (like Lead, Mercury, Cadmium and Hexavalent chromium etc), firstly implemented in EU in 2006, and similar directives are introduced in Asia.

RoHS Compliant

The insulation material is halogen free and no toxic emission in case of fire (DuPont Mylar) 95%-98% materials can be recycled.

Jun 2009

70

Ensure the firmness and stability of connection

Use silver-plated Bi-metal plate to clad on Aluminum conductor through high current and high pressure. The fusion strength is more than 120 MPa, higher than the tensile strength of conductor structure. The X-ray inspection testing shows that the fusion area has been combined as one. The connection plate has a very good heat stability, no warp or stripping under the high temperature environment
