In the western part of the presentday town center, Early Iron Age material
was identied which, together with the
ndings from Crkvine, represents a
part of an elaborate complex. In order
to systematically and more accurately
prepare for archaeological excavations,
as well as to more efciently characterize
the objects and thickness of cultural
deposits of the devastated site, the
Archaeological department of the Museum
of Kraljevo opted for employing remote
sensing methods of detection.
It was decided upon a network of
sections acquired by the method of
electrical resistivity survey. During the
course of work, 3 phases of measuring
were isolated which resulted in the
following of the preliminary results. Due
to the inability to embark upon a detailed
description of employed procedures in

Milan Vuji, agriculturalist from Novi
Sad born in the village of ukojevac,
started construction works on the hill
before acquiring a building permit.
Construction works for a large
building or acomplex of buildings
involved heavy machinery. Original
owners of the allotments in that area
willingly gave their estates to Mr.
Vujii. The area of the construction
works encompassed 85% of the
archaeological site. In spite of the
warnings from the liable institution
- National museum in Kraljevo, the
new owner, over a weekend, destroyed
almost 30% of the site including the
larger archaeological object planned
to be excavated in the future. The
remaining part of the site, around
15%, was saved by Slavoljub Radonji,
owner of one of the allotments, who
was not willing to either give or sell his
estate to Mr. Vujii. The excavations
were carried out in this area and
the destruction was reported to the
Institute for Protection of Cultural
Monuments in Kraljevo. The Institute
took legal action against Mr. Vujii
and stopped further construction
works.

valley and present-day road KraljevoRaka. In the rst place, however, this
position enables a view of the Trenjarska
river and of the road approaching
Gradina.
Removing vegetation enabled
excavation of a layer of dark brown
soil with abundant inclusions of ne
gravel. The color of the cultural layer
corresponds to the one in trench 1 and
it is characteristic for the entire site. Of
small nds, medieval pottery sporadically
appears together with a fragment of a
spindle whirl.
Trench 3
It was also positioned on the
northern side, 4x2 meters in dimensions
(8 m2), in the place where a small
number of pottery shards was found
during the survey of the site. The location
is quite steep with the bedrock surfacing
at several points inside the trench area.
Shallow cultural layer with ne gravel
inclusions yielded a small number of
medieval pottery shards.
Trench 4
Below trench 3, at a place with
fairly preserved deposit, trench 4 was
opened. Its orientation was north-south
and dimensions 4x2 m (8m2). Universal
deposit of gravel and friable soil was also
encountered here. In the northern part of
the trench a number of medieval pottery
shards was found.
Trench 5
4x2 (8 m2) meter trench was
excavated in the south part of the
fortication, west of trench 1. The
average depth of the layer, identical to
the ones previously described, is 0.2 m.

This paper represents only a
preliminary report of the rescue
excavations. Detailed analysis of this
necropolis will be published in ACTA
ARCHAEOLOGICA I, 2006. Petnica
Science Center.

We would like to use this opportunity
to thank to Predrag Petrovi of the
Ecological Association Ribnica, who
was the rst to inform of the situation
in the eld. Only a day after the
site was visited by Vojislav Filipovi
(Petnica S. C.) and Adam Crnobrnja
(City Museum of Belgrade). In a
telephone conversation with Radivoje
Arsi (Valjevo Institute for the
Protection of Cultural Monuments),
who was not able to organize rescue
excavations of the necropolis at
the time, it was agreed for the
Archaeological team of the Petnica
Science Center to undertake the
excavations under the jurisdiction of
the Valjevo Institute.

shaped tombstones
stand on the outside,
immediately next
to the churchyards
northeast wall.
Almost all of
the burials were
damaged during the
machine operated
ground works. Only
the skeleton in burial
1 was completely
preserved. Burial pits
were clearly seen
in the sections, at
the relative depth of
1.2 to 1.7 m. Since
burials pits were dug
into the sediment of
river gravel and there
was no time for more
meticulous excavations, it was decided to
use the heavy machinery for removal of
the overlying deposit in an average depth
of one meter. All the skeletons and burial
pits were clearly seen in the sections
meaning that there was no possibility of
damaging them.
All in all, 6 burials were excavated
with one more, burial 4, still remaining
at the site since it was positioned
underneath an access ramp for trucks
and heavy machinery. The deceased
were placed inside simple burial pits,
west-east oriented with slight offsets
to the north or south. The deceased in
burial 4 was placed on a wooden board,
which was clearly seen in the section,
while the deceased in burial 5 was placed
inside a tub-like construction of tightly
packed pebbles framed by larger pebbles
(gure 2). Pebbles were also present in
other burial pits while in burial 1 they
were placed around the edges of the
pit. Next to smaller shards of prehistoric
pottery and int which were obviously not
burial offerings, nds of chronologically
insensitive iron nails, one each from
burials 1, 3 and 5, should be mentioned.
The only personalized nd is a
bronze polyhedral button with granulated
ending, found in burial 1, in situ, on the
neck vertebrae of the deceased. Fully
cast button, 1.60.5 cm in dimensions,
is a frequent nd at Late Medieval sites
of Western and Central Serbia. A similar
button was discovered during excavations
of a medieval necropolis in Mrajevci and,
based on Sultan Suleiman I coins, was
dated to the rst half of the 16th century
(Radievi 2000: 61-109).

Introduction
Project of systematic ground
survey of the village of Bukovac and its
surroundings was conducted as a part
of the Archaeological Research School
Robaje 2003, organized by the Petnica
Science Center.1 Primary goal of the
project was to complete the data acquired
during excavations of stone Bronze Age
tumuli located in karst depressions, while
also recording sites of other chronological
designation. The survey area included
the territories of the villages of Bukovac,
Robaje, Golubac and a part of Krmar.

History of research
The area that was included in the
2003 survey did not draw much attention
in the past. The villages of Krmar and
Robaje were partially included in an
archaeological survey undertaken by .
Jovanovi and M. Valtrovi in 1892. and
1893. ( 1892;
1893). The material collected was
designated as a part of the BelotiBela Crkva cultural group by D. and M.
Garaanin (Garaanin 1983: 705-719).
During the nineties, two systematic
surveys were undertaken by the Petnica
S.C., which were aimed at locating Bronze
Age tumuli (Relji and Tomaevi 1993;
Jovanovi and Trifunovi 1996).
Geographical characteristics
Bukovac is located 9 km southwest of
Valjevska Mionica, on the northern foot of
the Maljen mountain. This entire region
lies on karst and is abundant in features
characteristic for this type of terrain,
namely funnel-shaped depressions. The
other geographic zone is a large, dried
out lake depression - Golubako polje. It
is enclosed by the Jezdinac mount to the
North, Radmilovac to the East, Kosovo
to the West and the Tusto mount to the
South. The village was named after the
Bukovac brook which ows through the
depression.

(x - 7418,575; y - 4896,375; z - 415)
On a eld with three depressions,
three stone tumuli were recorded. Two of
them were on the southeast and south
sides of the medium-sized depression and
the third tumulus was on the northwest
side of the largest, southernmost one.
The tumuli are at about 20 m from each
other, with following dimensions (from
East to West): 1) R 2 m; h 0.3 m; 2) R
1.5 m; h 0.3 m; 3) R 3 m; h 0.8 m.
3. Tusto brdo - Ravne vrtae
Location: Robaje
The site includes a complex of three
depressions with stone tumuli on the
sides, constructed of stone piled up
directly on the bedrock. The tumuli are
described in the westward direction.
3a. Depression No. 1
Four stone tumuli are located in this
depression, the largest one of all:
On the southwest, upper side of the
depression, R 10 m and h 0.5 m (x 7418,175; y - 4896,225; z - 432).
On the southeast side of the depression,
R 1.5 m, h 0.3 m (x - 7418,175; y 4896,212; z - 432).
In trees on the north side of the
depression, constructed of smaller
stones, R 5m, h 1 m (x - 7418,150; y 4896,250; z - 432).
Agglomeration of crushed stone, exact
dimensions of which were hard to
establish (x - 7418,125; y - 4896, 250; z
- 432).

groblje
7. Ilirsko groblje
Location: Bukovac, hamlet of Mitrovii
(x - 7419,575; y - 4894,400; z - 380)
Eight dirt tumuli were recorded on
Jovica Luis eld, two of which were
truncated by the village road. The owner
of the eld testies that he has come
across stones on the edges of tumuli
while plowing, and also that there were
more elds with tumuli present in the
past before they were leveled by the
villagers. He also testies that there were
yet more tumuli standing on the nearby
mount of Izvrac which we could not
conrm. Survey of the site yielded pottery
shards and an amorphous copper object.
The tumuli are of the following
dimensions:
I - R= 20.5m, h= 0.95m (excavated as
a part of the Summer Research School
Bukovac 2004)
II - R= 21.5m, h= 0.81m (excavated as

Location: Bukovac
(x - 7421,550; y - 4891; z - 532)
At the top of a slope below which
the terrain steeply drops down to the
Krmarska river, a tumulus is situated,
some 20 m in diameter and 1.5 m
preserved in height. Around 150 m to the
west of it lie the remains of yet another
smaller tumulus, 12 m in diameter and
0.6 m in height.
