Article Summary & Discussion Preparation Log Part I: Individual Assignment Name: _________________________________________ Due Date: __________ Article Title: ___Life in the Ocean________________________________________ Author/Source: _______James W. Nybakken and Steven K. Webster___________ While reading the article, highlight words or phrases that require definitions or clarifications What are the AUTHORs major ideas, concepts or key points? A: List the major ideas, concepts or key points- point by point Though the planet is called Earth, a majority of Earth's surface is covered in water. Researchers have studied less than 10 percent of the ocean. They have explored no more than 1 percent of the deep ocean oor. Seawater is about 800 times as dense as air and is much more viscous. Water absorbs light differently than air does. A few hundred meters deeper there is no sunlight at all and hence no photosynthesis. Phytoplankton are seasonal and vary by region. The global distribution of what few nutrients there are depends largely on the temperature stratication of the ocean. Heavy water that is the key to the food chain. Oxygen minimum zone occurs between 500 and 1,000 meters below the surface. Coral reefs house many marine animals. B: Summarize the AUTHORs main point or idea- at LEAST 1-2 paragraphs This article talks about how big the ocean is and how mysterious it is. The ocean is so big it covers the majority of the earths surface. Researches had tried to study as much of the sea as possible but they had only studied less than 10 percent of the ocean and only 1 percent of the ocean floor. The ocean floor has pressure of 1,100 atmosphere, which is about 1,100 heavier than our air. Seawater is 800 times more dense than air and absorbs light differently. C: Write a reaction paragraph to the article stating your own thoughts on the topic, using specific citations from the article to support your views I found this article very interesting because I found out how little we know about our oceans. We have only researched about 10% of the oceans which is not a lot. Since our oceans cover a lot of the earths surface it is very surprising. We should try to do further research and improve on what we know about the oceans. The better we understand the world, the better we can understand why animals do what they do. The article tells about how many areas are damaged and I say we should all try to help our oceans.

So What? The ocean is very big and we should try to explore more of it. Says Who? James W. Nybakken and Steven K. Webster What if..? We learned more of our oceans. What Does This Remind Me Of? This reminds me of space and how big it is and we only learned a little about it.
