Week 3: Focus on Maps and Climate

Lesson: Climates around the world Objective: At the end of this lesson, the students will understand the difference
between weather and climates. They will also be predicting weather based on their new knowledge of climates for where their Flat Stanleys are visiting.

Content Standards:
Social Studies California State Content Standards: A childs place in time and space 1.2 Students compare and contrast the absolute and relative locations of places and people and describe the physical and/or human characteristics of places. 1. Locate on maps and globes their local community, California, the United States, the 7 continents, and 4 oceans. 2. Compare the information that can be derived from a three-dimensional model to the information that can be derived from a picture of the same location. 3. Construct a simple map, using cardinal directions and map symbols. 4. Describe how location, weather, and physical environment affect the way people live, including the effects on their food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and recreation. Science California State Content Standards: Earth Science 3.Weather can be observed, measured, and described. a. Students know how to use simple tools (thermometer, wind vane, etc.) to measure weather conditions and record changes from day to day and across the seasons. Speaking and Listening: SL1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. a. Follow agreed-upon rules for discussion. SL2: Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media. a. Materials:

Instructional Directions:
1. First show the students the following clip about climates around the world http://youtu.be/ZouWWVyz9v8 2. Lead a whole class discussion about climates and if any students have visited places with a different climate than in our current city. Make a list on the board of the different climates Make sure to make the distinction between climate and a type of weather (rainy vs. humid)

3. Next, use the screen share of your iPad over the ELMO with the doceri app showing the world map. Have the students name where their Flat Stanleys are on an adventure and label them on the map. Then have the students predict the type of climate Stanley is encountering and what the weather might be like there today.

Make a screen shot of each students Flat Stanley location climate which will be used at the end of the unit. 4. Pass out the following worksheet again but this time the students will predict the weather for the place where their Flat Stanley is visiting. Have the students do this activity in groups.

5. In closing have the students take their weather vanes outside to predict tomorrows weather. Do the same weather prediction voting on the whiteboard and add up the tally marks, make sure to check yesterdays prediction on the weather channel app.
