Course Project Descriptions

The main purpose of the course project is to present a report detailing a comprehensive survey accompanied by simulation and case studies on a specific topic related to Power System Operations. Suggested project report structure: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) Literature survey (At least 6 journal papers on the related area) Modeling and simulation Case studies and results Conclusions References Appendices Report should be at most 15-pages long with reasonable margins, not more than 1.5 spacing, and 11pt font. Expectation is not to exactly replicate the paper, rather to understand the system model and implement it based on the techniques learned in lectures. If the system you are modeling is too large, you can use smaller system available in other similar papers (search on IEEE explorer). You do not have to use the same solution/algorithm method as proposed in the paper. Do not copy the literature survey from the paper; rather summarize 6 recent journals in the relevant area. Optimization may not be required in some of the projects.

Suggested topics: From the 6 broader topics listed below, choose one topic that you would like to work. Find 4 recent journal papers on the topic you chose. Summarize the papers and submit on CANVAS, then I will suggest you which particular paper to choose as the project work. Economic load dispatch, Unit commitment, Optimal Power flow and Locational Marginal Price (LMP), Transmission loss allocation and pricing, Ancillary services in Electricity Markets, Frequency Regulation When you summarize 4 papers, make sure you describe briefly methodology or algorithm used in the paper, the size of the problem, and a summary of the findings. A paragraph (not more than half a page) for each paper will be sufficient. It does not have to be critical review at this point. This is due on 20th September 2013, midnight on CANVAS.
