Possible topics include but are not limited to: Framing the violent and the ethical Utopian beginnings, apocalyptic endings Aesthetics and politics of the violent/the ethical Discursive/linguistic violence Text and context: the ethics of interpretation Translation: the ethical and the violent The ethical and the violent in history and politics Celebrating/mourning/recording/commemorating violence Violent matter and bodies in pain: the violence of inscription and the ethics of relief Ethics and human rights Spaces of violence, ethics of resistance Measuring/interpreting/legalizing/punishing violence Regional/national/ global conflicts: ethical problems and perspectives
The deadline for submissions is 25 November 2013. Abstracts of up to 250 words should be sent by mail/fax, or as e-mail attachments to the conference coordinator, Dr. Wajih Ayed. Papers should be no more than 20 minutes in length, and should be presented in English. Because up to 30 minutes per panel will be devoted to discussion, the number of selected papers will be limited. Researchers submitting abstracts are encouraged to raise questions that engage with the current debates on the ethical and the violent, and to come up with new perspectives that can enhance our understanding of their complex relationship. Participants whose abstracts are accepted will be notified by 1 December 2013. They will be expected to submit their full papers by 1 April 2014 in order for these to be considered by the scientific committee for publication in our peer-reviewed English Studies Series.
