Simple distillation: Separating liquids boiling below 150C at one atmosphere from 1. Non volatile impurities 2.

Another liquid boiling at least 25C higher than the first. The liquids should dissolve in each another.

Notes:
1. Dont fill the distilling flask more than half full. 2. Dont forget boiling chips.(to prevent bumping of the liquid) 3. Make sure all the joints in your setup are tight. 4. Make sure the entire thermometer bulb is below the side arm of the 3-way adaptor. 5. The water goes in the bottom and out of the top. (efficient cooling)

6. Dont use open flame as a source of heat. (to control temp.) 7. The system must be open to air or the apparatus will explode. The distillation mistake:

Important definitions 1. Vaporization: turning a liquid to a vapor. 2. Condensation: turning a vapor to a liquid. 3. Boiling point: the temperature at which the vapor pressure of a liquid equals atmospheric pressure and it remains constant until all liquid is vaporized. The boiling point of a liquid is a measure of its volatility.
