BSS20097: Automated RNW O&M log collection

Introduction

1 Introduction
1.1 In general
The Automated RNW O&M log collection feature (BSS20097) introduces the automated logging of all relevant operations, errors and faults related to radio network O&M in the BSC. The occurrence of these operations, error and faults is reported in a log file on the disk unit of the OMU in the BSC. The feature facilitates the tracking of O&M faults in the BSC and is particularly useful for those cases where the cause of the fault is unknown and the fault cannot be reproduced. In case of a fault, the log file can be sent to Nokia Siemens Networks Technical Support for fault tracing.

1.2

Benefits
This feature has the following benefits for the operator: Faults are resolved in less time Quality of the end user service is improved Operating costs are reduced

Functional description

3 Functional description
This chapter is divided into the following sections: Log file creation and feature activation Collection of RNW O&M logs to file Displaying logged data Logged operations Stopping log collection

3.1

Log file creation and feature activation

The operator needs to activate Automated RNW O&M log collection using the RNW O&M log usage FIFILE parameter. Before the feature can be activated, the operator needs to create a sub log file on the OMUs disk unit. This sub log file is used for the storage of RNW O&M logs. It is created by the operator using the DVC command in a remote or local MML session, and is given the name RNWLOG. The file is implemented as a ring buffer, and its size can be changed within the range of 30 kb to 3.3 Mb. The recommend file size for RNWLOG is 1 Mb. After creating the sub log file, the operator needs to modify log filtering settings using the DVM command. The writing of information logs for the MCMU is enabled by setting the log writing class parameter of the DVM command to INF. The software layer parameter of this command is set to APP , meaning that only log entries related to the application layer are written.

3.2

Collection of RNW O&M logs to file

After creation of RNWLOG and activation of the feature, the collection of RNW O&M logs to file is done in two phases. Whenever an RNW-specific operation starts, the BSC application writes detailed information about the operation in the information log file. This information provides a fingerprint of what the operation is going to do. Only that information which is relevant to fault tracing is written into the log file. After the RNW-specific operation has been completed, the BSC application writes information about whether or not the operation succeeded into the same information log file. Additionally, all error situations are also written into the log file. The error logging functionality pre-dates the Automated RNW O&M log collection feature. However, this feature indicates which O&M operation was being carried out when an error log appeared, and writes this information in the log file. The information log file appears only if the RNW O&M log usage parameter has been set. In the second phase, log entries are collected from both the MCMU information log file and the error logs, and placed in the sub log file RNWLOG. This collective information now can be used to resolving fault situations, because information about the planning and results of individual operations can be traced.

Log Handling.

3.3

Displaying logged data

The operator can display the logged data using the DVL command in a remote or local MML session. For this operation, the log file ID must be given. This ID can be obtained by the operator using the DVP command for displaying log file settings. The displayed logged data is in ASCII text format and can be copied from the MML session and pasted to a text file. This text file can then be sent to Nokia Siemens Networks technical support for further investigation.

3.4

Logged operations
The following RNW O&M operations are logged: BCF initialization, corresponding to a BCF reset situation. Logs are not collected in normal BCF reset situations, such as BSC system reset, and reset requests resulting from a provisioning plan activation. Fault recovery TRX swap SI sending at BSC level BCF lock and unlock BTS or TRX lock and unlock RTSL lock and unlock Sending of configuration data to the BTS network element Spontaneous TRX reset on the BTS network element System or MCMU reset BCSU restart or switchover Gb interface state changes FBPP operations, such as fallback activation, validating or activating a provisioning plan file, or starting or ending the plan file download

3.5

Stopping log collection

The collection of RNW O&M logs can be stopped by operator without having to deactivate the feature. This is done using the DVE command in a remote or local MML session. For this operation, the log file ID is also needed.

g For more information about using DV commands, refer to the document DV - Disk
Log Handling.
