Honoring veterans
Township to hold ceremony
on Nov. 12. PAGE 3
SHANNON CAULFIELD/The Sun
Residents in the area of Fairview Street, by the back entrance of Holy Cross High School, a New Jersey Transit Bus
Stop and on road with multiple group homes, will have to wait longer for the sidewalk promised through a state grant.
Councilman Tom Morrow is concerned about handicapped residents needing the sidewalk. The funny thing is, if you look at
the corners, youll see wheelchair accessibility, we had them installed, but then you exit it on to dirt and grass, Morrow said.
What is the purpose if they cant maneuver once they get off the ramps?

Residents of Fairview Street by
Route 130 will have to wait longer for
the sidewalk promised through a
state grant.
At its most recent meeting, town-
ship council rejected the $227,000 bid
for the project, which was $27,000
more than expected, according to
Councilman Tom Morrow.
Delran received the $215,000 grant
from the state a year ago, but has yet
to hire a contractor or break ground
for the project.
According to Morrow, council has
been running into issues with the
countys planning board, as Fairview
Street is a county road.
Its a disaster waiting to happen,
and we found a solution but the coun-
ty was unwilling to accommodate the
project, council President Gary
Catrambone said.
According to Catrambone, the
county is requesting extra-wide side-
walks, throwing a wrench into the
problem we thought we already
solved.
County planning board representa-
tives could not be reached for com-
ment.

Delran Township officials will
remember service men and
women for their sacrifice to
America on Tuesday, Nov. 12 out-
side the courthouse.
This ceremony is planned to
honor all those who have served
in the United States Armed
Forces. Veterans from Delran, De-
lanco and Riverside, along with
family members, are welcome to
attend, according to a township
release.
According to Councilwoman
Patti Kolodi, this is the first time
the township will be holding the
event.
We hope to make this an an-
nual celebration of our veterans,
Kolodi said.
Kolodi is unsure of the number
of people who will attend, but is
hopeful for a successful turnout.
The idea of celebrating veter-
ans in Delran came from council-
man Michael Schwartzs son dur-
ing Riversides Memorial Day pa-
rade, he said.
Im blind and my son walked
with me in the parade, Schwartz
said. He asked me why Delran

Responding to the growing de-
mand for veterans services,
Burlington County Freeholder
Director Joe Donnelly announced
that the countys Division of Mili-
tary and Veterans Services has
relocated to more spacious offices
at the Human Services Facility
on Woodlane Road in Westamp-
ton.
This is a case where the num-
bers truly tell the story, Donnelly
said. Our military and veteran
clients have tripled over the past
three years. And last year, the of-
fice processed more than $18 mil-
lion in claims more than any
other county in the state.
With the expanded space, each
veteran service officer has a sepa-
rate office, and can offer veterans
privacy to discuss their personal
medical issues, Donnelly said.
We also added an office for voca-
tional rehabilitation counseling,
so our veterans no longer have to
travel to Trenton for processing.
Space is now also available for
post-traumatic stress counseling,
and a conference room is avail-
able for group sessions.
The new suite also includes in-
dividual workstations, where vet-
erans can complete paperwork.
More than 4,500 veterans visit-
ed the offices in 2012, and 2013 ap-
pears to be on another record
pace, Donnelly said.
Relocating and expanding the
offices makes for a better environ-
ment for veterans and our staff
alike.
The new suite is located on the
third floor of the building.
For veterans with disabilities
and mobility challenges, the ele-
vator is within easy access.
Those wishing to schedule a
consultation to review eligible
benefits should call (609) 265-5008.

O
ne year ago at this time, com-
munities throughout New Jer-
sey were in utter amazement
of the damage that Hurricane Sandy
had done. Those of us who were lucky
enough to avoid direct damage from
the superstorm watched the videos
of the flooding in horror.
Hurricane Sandy destroyed peoples
homes, businesses and livelihoods. It
devastated our vacation spots, our es-
capes and our states largest tourist
destinations. It changed the way we
think about storm preparation, and
the likelihood that we can be heavily
impacted by what was before now
thought to be only a southern prob-
lem.
Over the months that followed the
storm, New Jersey rallied together
and fought to recover. The state put to-
gether messages saying we are
stronger than the storm. Volunteers
from all over showed up to help with
cleanup at Shore towns.
Slowly but surely, the federal gov-
ernment made grants available to help
us recover. Insurance companies often
made the process long, arduous and at
times unfulfilling.
One year later, we are still recover-
ing. Homes are still left unrepaired,
businesses have closed their doors for
good, and lives have been changed for-
ever.
But we move on. We keep on truck-
ing, as they say.
The phrase is played out at this
point, but it really is true that we are
stronger than the storm. Sandy cant
beat us.
The storm did remind us of how im-
portant it is to support our local com-
munities. We rushed to the Shore this
summer to vacation, and hopefully,
well continue to do so next year.
Local support isnt just seasonal,
though. In a few short weeks, youll
begin to see campaigns that will urge
you to spend local this holiday shop-
ping season, and its something that
you should definitely do.
Its a practice you can perform all
year round by shopping, eating and
buying locally. We all benefit from the
support.

conversation.
He and Kolodi worked closely to make
the celebration come to fruition.
We have memorials out front of the mu-
nicipal building, but we havent taken the
opportunity to remember those who
served, Schwartz said. We want it to be a
celebration for veterans for them to be rec-
ognized in a special way.
According to Kolodi, high school stu-
dents from the Interact Club will be part of
the day as well.
The ceremony will include an opening
song, and guest speaker Joseph McElroy, a
veteran and Haddonfield resident.
Well read a poem and read comments
from veterans who are there with a brief
description of their time in service, Kolo-
di said.
There will then be a closing song by the
high school choir and refreshments, which
will be provided by the Interact Club.
We as a council feel very strongly about
remembering veterans in our town be-
cause they have the wonderful parade in
Riverside each year so we wanted to do
something for them, Kolodi said. Our
towns work so well together. The feelings of
appreciation of veterans is strong in our
towns, and this is our way of remembering
them.
I think a lot of people may just show
up, Kolodi said. Veterans and family
members of veterans in Delran, Riverside
and Delanco are all invited to attend the
ceremony.
I want to acknowledge Patti for putting
this together. This is something she holds
close to her heart, Mayor Ken Paris said.
This is something for the veterans who
have given their time and service, and to
honor them is great.
Attendees are asked to fill out a form, as
it includes thoughts about their time in the
service, Kolodi said. Forms are available at
the municipal building.
This is our first shot at it, and the re-
sponse has been very good so far,
Schwartz said. Were hoping in the future,
that whether its Patti and I or other coun-
cil members, that it continues.

sey towns to receive the state
funding.
According to the state Depart-
ment of Transportation, the
grant program began in 2006 and
provides funding to counties and
municipalities to improve access
to transit facilities and all modes
of public transportation. The ob-
jectives of the SSTT program are
to improve the overall safety and
accessibility for mass transit rid-
ers walking to transit facilities; to
encourage mass transit users to
walk to transit stations; and to fa-
cilitate the implementation of
projects and activities that will
improve safety in the vicinity of
transit facilities (approximately
one-half mile for pedestrian im-
provements), the website said.
It was a great grant to get,
Morrow said. We were excited. I
was blown away when we re-
ceived it. Now to sit here a year
later, we thought we would have
the sidewalks by now.
Morrow is a resident of
Fairview in addition to oversee-
ing the ward in which the street is
located.
Council is concerned for the
residents of Fairview due to the
close proximity to Route 130.
According to Morrow, resi-
dents frequently walk in the area
to a New Jersey Transit bus stop.
Additionally, Fairview is a
back exit for Holy Cross, making
it an area where students walk,
Catrambone said.
There are a lot of mothers
there and baby coaches in the
area, Morrow said. The state
has also put a group home four
houses down from my house, and
some of those residents are in
wheelchairs.
I know this project is close to
Toms heart and he brought it to
our attention, Catrambone said.
Our concern is that, this is a
problem we recognized and ad-
dressed with the state, but noth-
ing has been done.
This is an issue of safety for
residents in Delran and River-
side, Morrow said.
The project is immediately
going out for rebid and council is
hoping for a quick turnaround to
begin the project.
According to Mayor Ken Paris,
the state has assured him the
township would not lose the fund-
ing.
The funny thing is, if you look
at the corners, youll see wheel-
chair accessibility, we had them
installed, but then you exit it on
to dirt and grass, Morrow said.
What is the purpose if they cant
maneuver once they get off the
ramps?
Morrow is concerned if a driv-
er doesnt pay attention while
driving, they may hurt or knock
someone off the road.
The township was prepared to
do the project without the assis-
tance of the county and will do so
with the state grant and township
capital funding, Catrambone
said.
The responsibility of the
county is to make sure their peo-
ple are safe, and were helping
take that off them, Morrow said.
The county sees the people out
there. The residents are anxious
to see those sidewalks put in.

Drapes, wood blinds, sheers
or verticals......... It a dilemma
that makes for many calls for
HELP! Have no fear. I have got
a handful of great alterna-
tives to work with any design
style.
The first thing to consider
is the level of privacy and
light needed for the space.
This certainly will not limit
your product selection, it's
more that the architecture
could limit some choices but
not in all cases. If we are
planning a front living room
window that gets extreme sun
at some portion of the day
then you need a dual purpose
treatment. Look at Hunter
Douglas Silhouette sheer
shades. They are one of those
products that lets you have
your cake and eat it TOO.
They can be open and light fil-
tering then when needed
close them or tilt them to de-
flect the harsh sun rays.
There are many interesting
textures within the collection
from linen texture weaves to a
refined sateen cloth and col-
ors galore.
When we think about bed
or bath windows the need
change a bit. It's generally not
a space you sit during the day
so it could be light filtering
but definite need for full pri-
vacy. This can be achieved by
the product just mentioned or
may I suggest a layered plan.
That could be a fabric roman
shade finished with station-
ary panels to complete warm
yet functional window treat-
ment. For a bit of the old fash-
ioned approach but twisted
up a bit I like to layer a tra-
versing liner panel under a
sheer panel for optional light
control .This is a soft window
treatment yet can still have
an updated detail like a euro
pleat verses a traditional
pinch pleat heading.
One of up and coming
trends for window fashion in-
cluded fabric roman shades.
The Design Studio Collection
by Hunter Douglas features
cotton , silks and blended fab-
rics to compliment any decor
(even your mothers) and as
far as light and privacy op-
tions that's not limited either.
They are usually on the top of
my list for a space that cannot
be cluttered with too much
fabric yet a need for a soft
window treatment.
We have a full display of
these and other products at
the studio on Third St . Call to
set an appointment to see
them and have an interactive
computer presentation of
your windows showing vari-
ous options. It's truly amazing
and makes the visual concept
so easy !
