IPP LESSON PLAN IN CLE 5

Supplementary Lesson: Advent Target Date: Number of Meeting: 1 Teacher:

I.

CONTEXT As Filipino Catholics, Advent has been a tradition that we observe before

Christmas. We prepare ourselves for the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ by attending the four Sundays of Advent. Children are not that aware that Advent season is coming. They may know what Advent is, but they dont give that much importance to what Advent really is. The learners are in a heterogeneous class compose of seventeen (17) males and twenty two (22) females. Majority are visual learners and kinesthetic learners. The learning will be taken place at their classroom.

II.

OBJECTIVES This lesson leads the learners to:

Doctrine: Define the meaning of Advent; Realize the importance of Advent; and Identify the symbols present during advent.

Moral: Value the importance of Advent; and Prepare and be glad to the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ by praying and going to mass. Relate to the story entitled Be Prepared

III.

EXPERIENCE A. Prelection Review of the previous lesson.

- How is Jesus present in the Eucharist? Jesus is present in the Eucharist through the following: 1. Eucharistic Body and Blood 2. Scriptural Word of God 3. Assembly 4. Minister/Presider)

B. Life Situation A short story about preparation will be read by the learners. Years ago, a farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast. He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Atlantic. They dreaded the awful storms that raged across the Atlantic, wreaking havoc on the buildings and crops. As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he received a steady stream of refusals. Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer. "Are you a good farm hand?" the farmer asked him. "Well, I can sleep when the wind blows," answered the little man. Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, Hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man's work. Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore. Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand's sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, "Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!" The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, "No sir. I told you, I can sleep when the wind blows." Enraged by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn,

the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly secured. Everything was tied down. Nothing could blow away. The farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, so he returned to his bed to also sleep while the wind blew.

Questions: What does the story wants to tell us? (To be prepared all the time.)

Synthesize: When you're prepared, spiritually, mentally, and physically, you have nothing to fear. We dont know when the second coming of Jesus Christ is. As early from now, we should prepare ourselves to receive Christ into our life.

C. Presentation of the word of God

36

A volunteer will read the Gospel from Matthew 24:36-44

But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[a] but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
42

Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Questions for discussion:

a. When was the first coming of Christ? (The first coming of Christ was the day he was born on December 25.) b. When will he probably come back again? (No one knows when Jesus will come back.) c. What do you do when someone is coming? (Prepare.)

Synthesize: Christ first came here on Earth as an infant, born of the Virgin Mary on Christmas day. No one knows when he probably comes back so we need to be prepared spiritually to welcome him again.

Reflection: Are you prepared enough to welcome Christ on his second coming?

D. Development of Faith Affirmation The followings are use during the discussion: PowerPoint Presentation Reinforcement/ Rewards (i.e. chocolates and praises)

Strategy: Student-teacher interaction

a. A video presentation will be shown to the learners that discuss about Advent season. b. Questions for discussion: 1. What is Advent? Advent or Advent season is a season where we prepare our self to the coming of Christ. 2. When does Advent start? And when does it end? Advent usually starts on the Sunday nearest to the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle which is on November 30 and also the Sunday followed by after the Solemnity of Christ the King. It ends on the day before Christmas which is on December 24. Advent may start as early as November 27 or as late as December 3. 3. What are the symbols used for Advent? a. Advent wreath is the symbol use during advent season. This Advent Wreath is arranged with 4 or 5 Advent candles, all on a base of evergreens each has a powerful message for us about our Lord. This has prevailing imagery we should not take for granted or consider just another holiday decoration b. The four candles signify as the light of Jesus Christ brought into the world. Usually there are 4 to 5 candles, 3 of which are purple, 1 pink and 1 white and each candle has its own meaning. The first purple candle which is lighted on the first Sunday of Advent is the candle of hope, the second purple candle during the second Sunday of Advent is the candle of preparation, the one pink candle that is lighted on the third Sunday is the candle of joy, the third purple candle on the fourth Sunday of Advent is the candle of love, and the last candle the white one which is on the center of the Advent wreath is the candle of Christ. 4. What is the importance of Advent?

Advent gives us a vision of our lives as Christians and shows us the possibilities of life. The vision of life that Advent gives us is twofold; it looks back to the first coming of Christ at Bethlehem, and it looks to the future when Christ will come again.

IV.

REFLECTION The pupils will reflect to the following question: How will you observe and give importance to Advent? How should we wait and get ready to celebrate Jesus coming?

The pupils will then share their insights to their seatmate and I will ask them randomly on what does their seatmate told them. The learners answers will be synthesized afterwards.

V.

ACTION For the end of the lesson, all the pupils will recite a prayer before Advent: One morning last week a tune started going through my mind. As you might imagine, that is not unusual. I often wake up in the morning with a song on my mind and often go to bed at night with a song on my mind. But this particular morning was different. I woke up with the tune "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" running through my mind, but the words that came to my mind were not the usual words to the song. Here are the words that came to my mind. Wipe away your tears, get rid of your fears; Here's the best news you've heard in years! Jesus Christ is coming to town. He's makin' a list in the Book of Life, That'll be the end of your trouble and strife! Jesus Christ is comin' to town. He loves you when you're sleepin', He loves you when you're awake; He loves you when you're bad or good, But be good for Jesus' sake! Now put on a smile, get rid of that frown, Spread the "Good News" all around; Jesus Christ is comin' to town. At this time of year, many people are thinking about Santa Claus coming to town and thinking about all of the great gifts that Santa will bring them. But the real reason for this season is the celebration of Jesus Christ's coming--and he brings us the greatest gift of all. He brings the gift of God's love. The Bible says, "But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy." Yes, he loves us when we're bad or good, what a great love that is!

Dear Lord, we thank you for your great love. We thank you that you showed us that love by sending your son, Jesus, to save us. In his name we pray, amen. The learners will do their best to go to mass not just during the Advent Season but every Sunday to worship and praise God.

VI.

EVALUATION The learners will be group according to their academic groupings. Each group will be given a 1/8 illustration board. They will make like this: ADVENTIcon/symbol that symbolizes Advent The learners will use the first letter of the word Advent on describing what is Advent. They will draw a symbol at the bottom part of their illustration board that symbolizes what they understand about Advent They will present their work creatively for 2 minutes in front of the class.
