Netspan Installation and Upgrade Guide

2 Introduction
2.1 General Overview
Netspan is a comprehensive management solution that manages the network elements in the WiMAX family, which consists of WIMAX-compliant Base Stations (BS) and Subscriber Stations (SS). Netspan is a client-server application, with always-on server components implemented as windows services, and with a front end web application. Netspan uses SNMP to communicate with BS equipment, as well as third party WiMAX-compliant SS devices. It can be adjusted to meet customer requirements through its flexible configuration options. The key features associated with Netspan are as follows: Support for 16d and 16e Base Stations Support for FreeRadius AAA server Support for both nomadic and fixed Subscriber Station (SS) Supports all Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and 2008 editions: Standard, Enterprise and Express. Indirect management of 16d SS (MIB model) Profile/class based provisioning Asynchronous configuration of data provisioning Synchronous/asynchronous status (database storage only for key status data) Full FCAPS support for all WiMAX equipment. NTP server functionality

2.2 Where Netspan fits into the Network Architecture

Netspan is designed around a client-server architecture. The Netspan server runs on a PC platform, making use of an SQL database to store the configuration, statistics and alarm history from the WiMAX network. Access to the Netspan server is from the web browser.

Figure 1 Netspan in WiMAX Network Architecture

Auto-CPE provisioning and Auto-Service Flow and Service Product allocation ensure that the network operator can take advantage of any compatible WiMAX-certified CPE that connects to the network. Network authentication is managed separately from service provisioning and activation, which is a fundamental part of any mobile system design. Netspan provides operator access rights to be granted according to roles. Depending on the operator access rights granted, Netspan allows configuration and diagnostic access to every WiMAX network element, right down to each individual Subscriber Terminal.

4 Verify Prerequisites
4.1 Verify hardware requirements
In normal operation, a separate server and client PC are required. The server and client are typically located remotely from the equipment being managed.

4.1.1 HW for Netspan Server

For a host machine for the Netspan Server, please observe the following minimum hardware requirements:

Table 1 - minimum hardware requirements

HW Component CPU Standard Platform CPU Quad Core Processor with 8M Cache or better 4GB RAM 120GB or greater Demo Platform CPU Dual Core Processor with 4M Cache or better 2GB RAM 80GB

Memory Hard disk storage

For hardware redundancy of the server hard disk, the following configuration can serve as an example: Drive Controller: Dual Channel Ultra 320 SCSI RAID Controller: support RAID 01 or stripped mirror, e.g. PERC Hard Drive: 4x Hot Pluggable, 120GB, SCSI drives (15K RPM). Note: The memory requirement is verified automatically by Netspan during installation and during operation (health check). When the memory does not satisfy the minimum requirement, the installer displays a warning message.

4.2 Verify software requirements

The server is based around Internet Information Services (IIS). See http://www.microsoft.com/iis. This is a web hosting application, and allows the clients to connect via HTTP using a standard web browser. The web application is developed using Microsoft ASP.NET. It is recommended to install always the latest service pack of the selected SQL Server engine. Netspan verifies the SQL version during installation and checked for the minimum supported version as defined in the following table:

Table 2 - SQL database S/W options

Application SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard, Enterprise or Express Edition - SP1 or later. Version 10.0.2531 SQL 2008 version < 11.0 10.0.2531 SQL 2008 version < 11.0

If the mode is changed to SQL Server Authentication the login and password fields must be filled with an existent SQL Login and password. Choose either to leave the Application Path and Data & Log Path to their default values or to change them to any path on a local drive. Server components (.dll files, windows services and Web Applications) will be installed at the Data & Log Path. To start services when the installation has successfully completed: 1. Check the Start Services at the end of the installation box. To configure the services so they automatically start up after each server reboot: 1. Check the Configure Services for Automatic Startup box. 2. Click the Next button. After confirmation, a Standard Windows Installer will start installing Netspan. When Windows installer completes deployment of new version of Netspan the databases upgrade starts. The database is created by running several SQL scripts. Depending on the version of Netspan prior to upgrade the databases upgrade can take very long time varying from as little as few minutes to, in extreme cases, over 1 hour.

12 Appendix E Browser Warnings due to Self-Signed Certificates

On the public internet, https with a certificate is used for two purposes: 1. Encrypted communication to a web server. 2. Secure identification of a webserver via a certificate issued by a trusted certificate authority. Https with a self-signed certificate provides encrypted communication to the web server. Browsers display warnings when visiting a site that is secured using the self-signed certificate to warn the user that the site may or may not be the one they are expecting to visit. These warnings have an option to proceed to the site.

The warnings can be prevented when visiting the site in the future as follows:

17 Appendix J Install .NET Framework

Netspans latest release requires installation of .NET Framework version 3.5 SP1 or above. Noticed for Windows Server 2008 64 bit, there was already a Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile installed. No additional .net installation required. Advice: The download(s) for relevant Microsoft products can be accessed by way of the Microsoft web site http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/. The .NET Framework files also can be found on the Netspan installation DVD. Caution: .NET Framework Version 3.5 SP1 must be installed after IIS. If the installation sequence to date was otherwise, uninstall .NET then reinstall it. To install Microsoft .NET Framework Version 3.5 SP1 perform the following steps: 1. Install the .NET Framework Version 3.5 SP1 according to the operating system. 2. Run the executable file (i.e., double-click the *.exe file) for the program. 3. In the Welcome to Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Setup screen click Next through the installation process screens. 4. Click Finish after acknowledging acceptance of the End User License Agreement.

Netspan Installation and Upgrade Guide Symptom Netspan error in internet browser: HTTP Error 404 File or Directory not found Problem Solution

This is caused by IIS extensions for asp.net v 4.0 not allowed. Likely cause is some out of order installation of prerequisites.
In same cases the installation of a third party asp.net software may have disable the IIS extension.

To cure the problem set the IIS WEB Server Extensions for .net 4.0 using IIS management console. - Open Internet Information Service Manager - In the left pane select the node Web Service Extension under the name of the server. - In the right pane select ASP.NET v4.0.30319.
- In the Window menu select Action->Allow.

Following successful installation of Netspan on Windows XP the attempt to browse Netspan WEB page gives an application error message: System.Web.Hosting.Hosting EnvironmentException: Failed to access IIS metabase. The process account used to run ASP.NET must have read access to the IIS metabase (e.g. IIS://servername/W3SVC). For information on modifying metabase permissions, please see http://support.microsoft.com/? kbid=267904.

As a result of some error during installation of system prerequisites (IIS, asp.net) the permissions to IIS metabase were not properly set for user aspnet.

Open command window and issue the commands as follows (example for default OS installation on drive C:): >C: >cd C:WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Fr amework\v4.0.30319 >aspnet_regiis ga aspnet >iisreset
If this doesnt solve the problem the entire Windows XP installation would have to be performed again.
