Introduction
Genetron 245fa (1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane) is a nonflammable liquid having a boiling point slightly below room
temperature. Genetron 245fa offers thermophysical properties that make it attractive for use as a refrigerant for centrifugal
chillers, and as a working fluid or sensible heat transfer fluid. The environmental properties of Genetron 245fa include a
zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and a low Global Warming Potential (GWP). In addition, it is not considered a
Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) in the United States.

Applications
For applications currently using HCFCs such as HCFC-123 or HCFC-141b, Genetron 245fa may be preferable due to its
favorable heat transfer characteristics, lower toxicity according to PEL, and its lack of chlorine that make it non-ozonedepleting and more stable in certain environments. HCFCs are subject to phase-out in the United States and other countries
according to Montreal Protocol requirements, and the EPA has publicly stated its intent to place limits on the production and
importation of HCFCs in the U.S. These actions may affect the price and/or availability of HCFC products, making the
ready availability of Genetron 245fa more attractive for new applications and equipment.
Applications for Genetron 245fa include:
Rankine cycle applications for waste heat recovery
Centrifugal Chillers for process and comfort cooling
Heat transfer applications, including secondary loops in commercial refrigeration
Heat pipes and thermosiphons, including electronics cooling
Thermal storage applications

Heat Transfer
Sensible heat transfer applications include industrial and commercial applications in areas such as the practice of chiral
chemistry in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, agricultural, and food additives. Genetron 245fa can be used to facilitate closely
controlled heat transfer in melt crystallization for processing pharmaceuticals, fats and oils, foods, beverages, fine chemicals,
lubricants and waxes. Similarly, it can be used as a heat transfer fluid for freeze crystallization as would be used in concentration of juices, extracts and coffee, removal of organic contaminants from wastewater, purification of inorganic salts
and acids, and processing of organic chemicals. Genetron 245fa can also be used as a secondary loop fluid for commercial applications such as low-temperature refrigeration in supermarkets. Proper system design and regulatory approvals
may be necessary in order to use Genetron 245fa in food, drug, cosmetics, or pesticide manufacturing processes.
The ratio of heat transfer coefficient to friction factor signifies heat transfer performance efficiency (one wants to maximize
heat transfer and minimize fluid friction or pumping power). The graph below illustrates that Genetron 245fa has a higher heat
transfer coefficient to friction factor ratio than many other commercially available heat transfer fluids.

Organic Rankine Cycle (Energy Recovery/Conversion)

Genetron 245fa is well suited for various energy recovery applications. There is a good match for energy recovery from
low-pressure steam, lending to more efficient power generation schemes where steam driven turbines are used (bottoming cycle).
The favorable efficiency of Genetron 245fa is evident in the following cycle comparison.

Centrifugal Chillers
Genetron 245fa can be used in centrifugal chillers, providing a way to replace CFC-11. Given the vapor pressure of
Genetron 245fa, the equipment would need to meet the requirements for coded pressure vessels. Genetron 245fa would
not be used as a CFC-11 retrofit fluid for that reason. The capacity of Genetron 245fa is higher than CFC-11 or HCFC-123. Theoretical
thermodynamic efficiency is between that of R-123 and R-134a. For multiple stage units, the efficiency of Genetron 245fa is
comparable to that of other low-pressure refrigerants. Improved transport properties compared to other low-pressure
refrigerants means improved system efficiency is possible through design optimization. The table below illustrates the
performance of Genetron 245fa in single and multi-stage chillers.

Toxicity
HFC-245fa is currently listed on the US EPA TSCA Inventory, the European EINECS Inventory, and the Japanese METI
Inventory. Extensive toxicity testing indicates that HFC-245fa is of low toxicity. Overall results from a series of genetic
studies indicate that HFC-245fa is non-mutagenic. It was also not a teratogen. The American Industrial Hygiene
Association has established a Workplace Environmental Exposure Level (WEEL) of 300 ppm. Anyone who uses or handles
HFC-245fa should carefully review the MSDS and product label prior to use.

Stability
Laboratory tests indicate Genetron 245fa to have a high degree of thermal and hydrolytic stability. Sealed tube thermal
stability tests were conducted at 260 C for 4 weeks. When tested alone under these conditions, Genetron 245fa purity
was relatively unchanged. In sealed tube studies the material showed no signs of decomposition after 6 weeks of exposure
to temperatures ranging from 75 C to 200 C in the presence and absence of water (at 300 ppm) and in the presence and
absence of metals (3003 aluminum and/or 316 stainless steel). A separate study was also conducted with cold rolled steel
rod exposed to Genetron 245fa in the presence and absence of air and water for a period of 2 to 6 weeks at temperatures
ranging from 25 C to 100 C. Again, Genetron 245fa did not show any signs of decomposition. The presence of metals,
air, moisture and lubricant can influence stability and as a result, thermal stability should be evaluated for the conditions
of application.

Compatibility
As with any new fluorocarbon alternative, Honeywell is carrying out materials testing to evaluate the compatibility of
common materials of construction with Genetron 245fa. The results of testing completed to date are listed in the tables
that follow. The evaluations are based on 14, 30, and 90 day testing results. The evaluations also consider static and dynamic
conditions and the intended applications of the materials.
There may be some neoprene and nitrile rubber formulations as well as perfluoroelastomer compounds that may be acceptable
for specific applications. Elastomer compatibility should be evaluated at the conditions of use.
