It is important because in general, magazines are displayed in shops with the left hand third protruding slightly and this allows the potential buyer a quick view of the content without the need to pull it out and flick through. It is vital in targeting the ideal readership of magazines bought from retail outlets. Not so relevant for subscription magazines.!
