The twenty third annual
Chili Cook Off will high-
light the weekend in
Downtown LaGrange on
Saturday October 26. The
event begins at 1 and ends
at 5.
This community event is
sponsored by the
Downtown LaGrange
Development Authority and
historically draws over 1500
people to LaFayette Square
in Downtown LaGrange . It
is a fun, family friendly
event and is a great way for
local groups to raise funds
and increase public aware-
-ness about their charities
and causes.
Members of the community
will purchase a $5.00 ticket
for the chance to sample a
variety of chili and cast a
vote for their favorite. Chef
Henry Menard of Kimbles
Food by Design and Jeremy
McCosh , food service
director at LaGrange
College, will be serving as
Chili Cook Off judges this
year to select the Best
Overall Chili winner. The
first place winner will
receive a cash prize of
$200.00, second place earn-
ing a $100.00 prize. There
is also the opportunity for
cook off participants to earn
prize money for the Best
Decorated Booth and the
Peoples Choice award for
Best Chili. All Cook Off
entrants will earn some
money just by participating,
as the proceeds from the
ticket sales will be equally
divided among them, after
the event expenses have
been covered.
The Downtown LaGrange
Development Authority has
opened the event up to local
groups and organizations in
the community that have a
cause that they would like
to raise funds for. Last
years winners, Dr. Bill
Miller Orthodontics -
Judges choice and Bealls
Plumbing - Peoples choice
for best chili will be com-
peting again this year.

this Saturday to children
in costume, ages 12 and
under. There will be
candy stations along the
sidewalk on the north
side of LaFayette Square.
Candy will be provided
by Camp Academia,
KMMG, PowerTech,
GAPS, Glovis Georgia,
Mobis, JC Malone and
Laurel Crossing
Apartments. The
Guardian motorcycle rid-
ing club will be located
on East LaFayette Square
and will be passing out
candy next to their bikes.
They will have a few fall
festival games for the
children to enjoy as well.
This event is limited to
children only.
Trick
or Treating will begin at
1:00 and will go until
3:00 or while candy sup-
plies last.
Halloween costume
contest
This is an event for chil-
dren ages 12 and under.
There will be four age
brackets and ribbons will
be awarded for the best
boy and girl costume in
each bracket beginning
with infants less than 12
months of age, ages 1to
4, ages 5 to 9 and ages
10 to 12. Children must
register for the contest at
the registration tent on
the Square between 1:00
and 3:00. The contest
will begin at 3:00.

tumed pet contest and

Gizmo is at it yet again.
It was bedtime.
Everybody was settling
down for the evening. I
saw Gizmo sneaking
around the back of the
love seat. Stupid cat was
trying to come between
the trash basket and the
end table, and I told him
he was stupid. He got
down on his stomach like
he was looking for some-
thing. About that time I
felt fur on top of my
foot. For a second it did-
nt dawn on me that it
was not Gizmos fur.
Let me tell you we
have a house full of ani-
mals. Dylan has a white
rat, named Popcorn,
Michael has a hamster
named Lucy. We have
about seven gold fish and
Im sure they have been
named something. We
have Gizmo and
McKenize the dog.
After a second with
this fur on my foot I
yelled ekeeeeeeeeeeeee.
It seemed like no one
heard me. Than I realized
nothing was coming out
of my mouth. I yelled
Phyllis I think about
three times before I actu-
ally got it out. Finally I
was able to say rat
because by this time I
saw Lucy on my foot. I
jerked it out like it was
on fire and Lucy went
flying though the air with
the greatest of ease. I
keep yelling Phyllis,
Michael, rat, rat, rat, and
than I yelled Rosie.
Dont know where that
came from.
Well by this time
Michael is running
though the house yelling
Pippy theres a rat and
than I heard Pippy said
its Lucy. Michael really
took off than because
Gizmo is dead after
Lucy. He finally found
her under the chair. I
dont know if she is
scared because of all the
noise but I know this for
a fact. It will take every-
body awhile to doze back
off the sleep, including
me.
I try not to be
afraid of Lucy but I cant
bring myself to hold her.
I will be honest if it had
been Dylans white rat,
Popcorn, I wouldnt type
this story right now.

The 3rd Annual Teen
Maze is scheduled for
October 29-31 at the
Callaway Conference
Center of West Georgia
Technical College. Parent
Night-Community
Preview Night is October
29 from 5-7:45 p.m.
October 30-31 will be
Teen Maze student days.
Teen Maze promotes
awareness with teens nav-
igating from one station
to another in the Maze
while experiencing life-
like situations. Teens
learn about the conse-
quences of teen pregnan-
cy, sexually-transmitted
disease, underage drink-
ing, drug use, and the
judicial system with pos-
sible jail time as a result
of their choices during the
Maze. Troup County con-
tinues to remain above
the Georgia and national
averages in the number of
teen pregnancies and
youth sexually transmit-
ted desease (STD rates).
The ultimate goal of Teen
Maze is to demonstrate
the best pathway to a
timely high school gradu-
ation and a successful
future. Students partici-
pating in Teen Maze have
stated in follow-up sur-
veys that having accurate
information has enabled
them to make better
choices.
Teen Maze is locally
funded by community
partners like United Way
of West Georgia, Wal-
