Geography Lesson Plan 1) Benchmark/Standard GI.

.1: Spatial Thinking 2) Behavioral Objective The learner will demonstrate the ability to identify different economic activities given a picture and the ability to interpret a thematic map to determine where certain economic activities and resources are located. 3) Objective/Purpose: Today we will demonstrate the ability to identify different economic activities and the ability to interpret a thematic map about economic activities. This will be accomplished by writing down what economic activity you think each picture represents and by looking at a world map and explaining where specific economic activities and resources are located. 4) Input a) Task Analysis: i) Give a brief overview of economic activities. ii) Pass out the word bank. Ask if the students need an explanation of any of the economic activities. iii) Explain the activity. iv) Display the pictures of economic activities. v) Have the students write down their answers on a piece of paper. vi) Go through the answers. Before showing answers, divide class into groups. Have the students number off within the group. Give them a minute to discuss answers within the group. vii) Call on a number. Those students in each group will raise their hand. Call on one of them. viii) Repeat for all slides, showing the correct answer after someone shares their answer. ix) Review any that people had a difficult time identifying. x) Bring up the economic activity map. Have the students turn to page 556 and take a minute to analyze the map. xi) Ask questions regarding the map, such as what the maps topic is and what the colors and symbols stand for. xii) Model an example (such as hunting and gathering) by showing how to find which color means hunting and gathering and then finding that color on the map. xiii) Ask for volunteers to answer a couple other examples like this. xiv) Draw sticks for a few more examples. b) Thinking Levels i) Comprehension: Interpret what economic activity each picture represents. ii) Analysis: Use the thematic map to determine where various economic activities and resources are located. c) Learning Styles i) Auditory: Students hear teacher giving directions and asking questions.

ii) Visual: Students see the pictures in the presentation and match them to an economic activity. iii) Intrapersonal: Students answer the economic activity questions on their own. d) Methods and Materials i) Ways of presenting: lecture, demonstration ii) Materials Needed: Whiteboard, projector, digital pen, lined paper, textbooks Modeling a) First step is to demonstrate finding hunting and gathering areas on the map by looking at the key for the correct color then finding that color on the map. Checking for Understanding a) Have all students answer what economic activities they think the pictures represent. b) Exit Slip. Guided Practice: a) Students will work on identifying the economic activities on their own. b) The teacher will go through the answers and clear up any misconceptions. Independent Practice a) Choice Menu bring to class tomorrow. i) Appetizer: Choose one of the economic activities and draw a picture that best shows what this activity consists of (required). ii) Main Course: Using the economic activities map, identify the part of Africa that has nomadic herding as the primary land use OR identify an area in North America that has oil as a resource (choose one). iii) Side Dishes: Draw a Venn diagram showing similarities and differences between subsistence farming and commercial farming. Create a comic strip showing a day on a job that would fall under trade and manufacturing. Write a brief paragraph explaining the two main parts shown on an economic activities map. (Choose Two) iv) Dessert: Using both a climate map and an economic activities map, find an area in the world that has both desert climate and nomadic herding. Identify this area, and explain how the climate of this area influences the land use (Optional) Closure a) Exit Slip - Analysis: What symbol represents precious metals, and where do you see precious metals located on the map?
