Standards:
11.0 Students apply basic factoring techniques to second-and simple third-degree polynomials. These techniques include finding a common factor for all terms in a polynomial, recognizing the difference of two squares, and recognizing perfect squares of binomials.
What is factoring?
Factoring means writing a polynomial as a product of polynomials.
Definition
Greatest common factor largest quantity that is a factor of all the integers or polynomials involved.
Factoring by GCF
What is the greatest common factor of each pairs of monomials?
15 x = 3 5 x 45 x2 = 3 3 5 x x
-7a2b2 = -7 a a b b -3ab = -3 a b
7. 3x2 6x 9
15. 13a2 26a3
7x (x2 + 3x 4)
Factoring by Grouping
When does it work? Always
When should I use it? For any polynomial but especially when you have 4 or more terms.
Example:
1.) 6x3 9x2 + 4x - 6 (6x3 9x2) + (4x 6) 3x2(2x 3) + 2(2x 3)
( 3x2 + 2) (2x 3)
39. ab + 7a 3b - 21
43. 2ax + 6x 5a - 15
