The value of order is very important in order to develop the skill of factoring by grouping. We are reminded once again that in life, things need to be re-ordered and sorted out to be useful. This is a value that God wants us to learn to be able to live an abundant life.
*********************************************************************************************
A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense. (Proverbs 19: 11) Success in factoring trinomials requires patience, thoroughness and systematic effort. Mistakes might occur in the first few trials but don't be discouraged. You will learn from these mistakes and these will remind you not to make the same mistake. This value is very important to learn as you struggle through life.
Definition:
Any equation that can be put in the form
ax2 + bx + c = 0,
where a, b, c are real numbers (a 0), is called a quadratic equation. The equation ax2 + bx + c = 0 is called the standard form for a quadratic equation.
Zero-Factor Property
Let a and b represent real numbers. If a b = 0, then a = 0, b = 0.
Example 1
Solve x2 5x = 24.
First write the quadratic equation in standard form. x2 5x 24 = 0 Now, factor the quadratic using techniques from the previous lessons. x2 5x 24 = (x 8)(x + 3) = 0 Then, set each factor equal to 0. x 8 = 0 or x + 3 = 0, which will simplify to x = 8 or x = 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Check (using substitution) both possible answers in the original equation.
82 5(8) = 64 40 = 24

Example 2
Solve 4x(8x + 9) = 5
First write the quadratic equation in standard form. 32x2 + 36x = 5 32x2 + 36x 5 = 0 Now we factor the quadratic using techniques from the previous lessons. 32x2 + 36x 5 = (8x 1)(4x + 5) = 0 We set each factor equal to 0. 8x 1 = 0 or 4x + 5 = 0
8x = 1 or 4x = 5, which simplifies to x =
1 or 5 . 4 8

x = 3 or x = 2
x2 + 6x + 9 = 0 (x + 3)2 = 0
x = -3
(2x + 7) (2x 7) = 0
x = -7/2 or x = 7/2
3x (x 5) = 0

x = 0 or x = 5
x = 6 or x = 8

y = 8 or y = 5
x = -15 or x = 10
x = -4 or x = 4 or x = -1
(x2 16) (x + 1)

89. Find a quadratic equation that has two solutions: x = 3 and x = 5. Write your answer to standard form.
(x 3) (x 5) = x2 8x + 15
