Fibre Channel Module

To correct errors, press SHIFT and use , , , to select the error. Press SHIFT and enter the correct character. 3. When nished, press ESC.

HI-FREQ: This pattern has a high transition of ones and zeros. It is generated by repeating the D21.5 sequence (composed of alternating D21.5+ and D21.5-); it contains the 1010101010-bit sequence. A repeating D21.5 pattern has the highest transition density; these characteristics make this pattern useful for testing random jitter and asymmetry of transition times. LO-FREQ: This pattern has a low transition of ones and zeros. It is generated by repeating the K28.7 sequence (composed of alternating K28.7+ and K28.7-); it contains the 0011111000 1100000111bit sequence. A repeating K28.7 pattern has the lowest transition density; these characteristics make this pattern useful for testing low frequency random jitter and PLL tracking error. MIX-FREQ: This pattern has a low transition of ones and zeros mixed with a high transition of ones and zeros. It is generated by repeating the K28.5 sequence (composed of alternating K28.5+ and K28.5-); it contains the 00111110101100000101-bit sequence. A repeating K28.5 pattern has a 50% transition density and a 50% mark density; these characteristics make this pattern useful for testing deterministic jitter. 1111: Industry-standard all ones pattern. 1010: Industry-standard alternating ones and zeros pattern. 0000: Industry-standard all zeros pattern. CJTPAT: Compliant Jitter Tolerance Pattern is for jitter measurements. It is intended to expose a receivers CDR (Clock and Data Recovery circuit) to large instantaneous phase jumps. The pattern alternates repeating low transition density patterns with repeating high transition density patterns. CRPAT: Compliant Random Test Pattern is intended to provide broad spectral content and minimal peaking that can be used for the measurement of jitter at either a component or system level. CSPAT: Compliant Supply Noise Pattern creates the worst case power supply noise introduced by the transceiver. This noise is caused by the switching output of the power supply. Conguration Items, Continued (see Figure 6) FRAME LENGTH (only in FC-1/FC-2 Testing) Choose a value by pressing SHIFT and using the numeric keypad. The range of frame length is from 24 to 2140 bytes with steps of 4 bytes. The default value is 28. Notes: If CRPAT, CJTPAT, or CSPAT test patterns are selected, the frame length is xed to the length dened in the specications: - CRPAT frame length = SOF (Start Of Frame) +196 bytes

FRAME LOSS RATE: This generates a graph that shows the frame loss rate as a function of the frame rate. The test begins NEXT at the starting rate (usually 100%), sends a number of Figure 47 Frame Loss frames, and then calculates the Rate Conguration Screen frame loss rate as a percentage based on the following equation:

SSMTT-30Z

45

[(Input count output count ) x 100]/(Input count) For example: If 10000 frames were sent, but only 9800 were received, the frame loss rate would be: [(10000 - 9800) x 100]/(10000)=2.00% After calculating the frame loss at a given throughput rate, the throughput is reduced by the specied step size (no greater than 10%) and repeated. In the FRAME LOSS RATE CONFIGURATION screen congure the following: START BANDWIDTH Options: 1.0100% Determine the starting point for the test. STEP SIZE Options: 120%. Default is 10.00% Determine the step for the next bandwidth to be tested. After testing at a frame rate, the test will reduce the frame rate by the specied step size. Smaller step sizes will greatly increase the overall duration of the test while increasing the resolution. DURATION Options: 1999 seconds Determine the step duration. D_WWN: This is the same as S-WWN, but for the far end device that will be connected. Each device in the SAN (Storage Area Network) is identified by a unique hex 64 bit WWN (World Wide Name). The WWN contains a Company ID eld, which is dened and maintained by the IEEE, and a vendor info eld. Currently, there are two formats of the WWN as dened by the IEEE. The original format contains either a hex 10 or hex 20 in the rst two bytes of the address. This is then followed by the Company ID information. The new addressing scheme starts with a hex 5 or 6 in the rst half-byte, followed by the company ID in the next 3 bytes. The vendor info is then contained in the remaining bytes.

3 Reference
This section contains material to help you better understand the technology you are working with. 3.1 Fibre Channel Introduction Fibre Channel is an integrated set of standards developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Its physical and signaling interface is described in ANSI X3-230. Fibre Channel is a widely used technology in SANs (Storage Area Networks) and is optimized for high reliability transportation of data between servers and storage devices. A very low 10e-12 bit error rate insures error free delivery of data. This is achieved through low-level hardware error detection, flow control and error deletion. Fibre Channel can be used as a data layer protocol to transport upper level protocols like IP, SCSI, IPI, HIPPI, or ATM. Fibre Channel can operate at several speeds, including 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps. Transmission distances vary depending on the combination of speed and media. Single mode bre optic media using a long wave laser light source results in a maximum of 10 km at 1 Gbps. 3.1.1 Fibre Channel Topology Fibre Channel has three possible connection topologies, they are: Point-to-Point Topology This is the simplest topology; it directly connects two nodes called N_Ports through a single link.

N_PORT

Point-to-Point

N_PORT

Figure 63 Fibre Channel-Point-to-Point As shown in Figure 63, the link is two unidirectional fibres transmitting in opposite directions to their associated transmitter and receiver. Each bre is attached to a transmitter of a port at one end and a receiver of another port at the other end.

SSMTT-30Z

65

Fabric Topology In this topology, as shown in Figure 64, multiple nodes are interconnected through a switch called a Fabric. N_PORT N_PORT Fabric N_PORT

N_PORT N_PORT

N_PORT N_PORT

N_PORT Figure 64 Fibre Channel-Fabric The role of the Fabric is to receive frames from source ports and route them to the correct destination ports. Each source or destination N_Port is physically connected to a Fabric port called an F_Port. The link connecting these ports consists of two unidirectional bres transmitting in opposite directions to their associated transmitter and receiver. Arbitrated Loop Topology Multiple N_Ports can also be interconnected without using a Fabric by using a loop topology as shown in Figure 65. N_PORT N_PORT N_PORT N_PORT N_PORT Figure 65 Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop In this the N_Ports are connected by attaching the incoming and outgoing bres to different ports.

3.1.2 Fibre Channel Layers As shown in Figure 66, Fibre Channel has a hierarchical structure. FC-4 FC-3 FC-2 FC-1 FC-0 IPI SCSI HIPPI IP ATM

Common Services Framing Protocol/Flow Control Encode/Decode 1.0625 Gbps 2.125 Gbps 4.25 Gbps

Figure 66 Fibre Channel Layers FC-0 Layer This layer denes the physical layer: bre, connectors, and optical parameters for various data rates. FC-1 Layer This layer denes the transmission protocol including 8B/10B encoding/decoding, error control and special characters. The 8B/10B encoding takes 8 bits of data at a time and encodes it into a 10-bit symbol. 8B/10B is used to provide DC balance to the signal transmitted on the bre. The 10B symbols insure that enough transitions are present in the bit stream to detect a clock signal. In addition this type of encoding provides error detection for some types of transmission errors. The 8B/10B encoding/decoding process involves matching an 8-bit byte of data in a 10-bit data or special character symbol. The 8-bit character is composed of eight information bits denoted as A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, and the control variable Z. At the 10b level the bits are encoded into bits denoted as a, b, c, d, e, i, f, g, h, and j. Each 10-bit symbol is given a name using the convention, Zxx.y. Z indicates the control variable and takes value of D for data characters or K for special control characters. The decimal value of the 10b binary value is indicated by xx.y. For example, the name of the FC-1 transmission character composed of the hexadecimal BC special (K-type) code is K28.5. The K control characters are used for protocol management. There are 256 8-bit combinations for data characters; each 10-bit symbol received is decoded using one of the 256 combinations. If a D or K symbol is received and cannot be matched into any of the existing symbols, it is reported as a symbol error. This is caused by a transmission error.
SSMTT-30Z 67

Each 8-bit data/control character has two possible matching 10-bit symbols. One or the other symbol is chosen depending on the Running Disparity. This is calculated based on the balance of ones and zeros in the transmission bits. On the receiving side, the bits are checked against the Running Disparity. If the received symbol has the opposite disparity as the expected one, a transmission error has occurred and a Disparity error is reported. FC-2 Layer This layer denes many of the features of the Fibre Channel protocol, including: Data overhead and control (ordered sets) Framing Login/Logout Flow Control Classes of Service Ordered Set In Fibre Channel, 4 byte long words beginning with the special character K28.5 have a special meaning and are called ordered sets. Each Fibre Channel frame (see Framing) starts with a Start of Frame (SOF) delimiter and ends with an End of Frame (EOF) delimiter. They respectively indicate the start and stop of variable length frames. Multiple SOF and EOF are available depending on the class of service (see Service Classes). IDLE is an ordered set that indicates that the port is ready for frame reception and transmission. Framing

Figure 67 Fibre Channel Frame Structure Fibre Channel uses frames to transmit the data/payload. As shown in Figure 67, each frame consists of: SOF (4 bytes) Start of Frame (see ordered set). Frame header (24 bytes) contains source and destination ports address and link control information. Payload (0 to 2112 bytes) contains data from the upper layers. Note that the 64 bytes can be used as an optional header.
68 Fibre Channel Module

CRC (4 bytes) cyclic redundancy check used to detect transmission errors. EOF (4 bytes) End of Frame (see Ordered Set). There are two types of Fibre Channel frames: data frames and link control frames. Data frames contain data from the upper layers. Link control frames are used to acknowledge (ACK) or indicate when a port is BUSY or when a frame is rejected (REJECT). Login/Logout Before exchanging any data, the N_Ports and F_Ports need to login by either: Using the fabric login protocol, the N_Port will exchange its service parameters with the fabric F_Port. Using the N_Port login protocol, the N_Port will exchange its service parameters with another N_Port. At the end of the exchange the N_Port will logout by: Using the N_Port logout protocol, the N_Port will request removal of its service parameters to free up resources. Flow Control To avoid congestion at the receiver, flow control is used. This occurs in the FC-2 layer. Each service class has a different flow control mechanism. Class 1 uses end-to-end flow control, class 3 uses buffer-to-buffer flow control and class 2 uses both. End-to-end and buffer-to-buffer flow control use the same process involving the source port and its use of credits and credit counter. Credits indicate the number of buffers allocated to the transmission. The credit counter indicates the number of frames that havent been acknowledged by the receiving port. When the number of buffers on the receiving side is insufcient to process the incoming frames, the port will send a BUSY link control frame. When an errored frame is received, the port will send a REJECT link control frame. When end-to-end flow control is used, the source N_Port and the destination N_Port use the login procedure to negotiate the EE_Credit (end-to-end credit). When buffer-to-buffer flow control is used, flow control is accomplished between the source N_Port and the F_Port (N_Port in point-to-point) during the login procedure by negotiating the BB_Credit (buffer-to-buffer credit). Service Classes There are ve classes of service dened for Fibre Channel. Each class of service is used for types of trafc with different delivery requirements. We will only discuss classes 1, 2 and 3. Class 1 is a dedicated connection between the source and destination ports through the fabric. This dedicated connection is
SSMTT-30Z 69

established during the login procedure and is retained through the duration of the exchange. This guarantees the bandwidth between the ports and that the frames are delivered in the order they were sent. Class 2 is a connectionless service. The frames are multiplexed between the different transmitting and receiving port. It doesnt guarantee bandwidth or delivery of the frames in the order they were sent; however the receiving port confirms frame delivery. Class 3 is similar to class 2 except that frame delivery is not conrmed.

3.2 Handling of Optical Fibre Proper handling of optical bre cables, connectors, and equipment is important in obtaining accurate measurements and preventing potential transmission problems. This section reviews proper handling procedures for optical bre. SC Connector Bulkhead Adaptor Alignment Sleeve Key FC Connector Barrel Key

Ferrule Figure 68 Examples of Optical Connectors and Adapters Fibre Optic Patch Cord Basics Fibre optic patch cords come in two categories: Single-mode, which are yellow, and multi-mode, which are orange. The terms single-mode and multi-mode describe physical transmission mechanisms of the bre and do not refer to the quality of the bre. Single-mode and multi-mode transmission equipment are not usually interconnected. Multi-mode is used for shorter transmission distances and is generally less expensive than single-mode. Considering that an optical bre is a strand of glass about the same diameter as a human hair, it is remarkable that they are as durable as they are. However, careful handling will ensure continued high performance and long life. Do not pull or kink patch cords, as the glass strand in the middle might become damaged or broken. Even if the bre is not permanently damaged, a sharp bend will cause excessive signal loss. Fibre optic cables work by bending the light signal as it travels. But, the light can only tolerate so much bending. Keep patch cord bend radii no less than an inch. Use specialized optical cable raceways and plenums whenever available. Never use tie wraps as you would with electrical cables.

Fibre Optic Connectors Alignment Sleeve Ferrule of Connector B

Ferrule of Connector A Alignment Sleeve End Faces Touch Fiber Figure 69 Cross-Sectional View of Connectors In the electrical world, female connectors are mated to male connectors. In the optical world, the connection mechanism is altogether different. Fibre optic connector systems are designed to align two bre ends so that the light signal will pass between them; imagine trying to align two hairs end to end. Modern bre optic connector systems solve this nearly impossible task. There are several types of optical connectors in use today. Figure 68 shows the two most popular, SC and FC. In this example, an SC to FC bulkhead adapter is used to connect the two bres together. In Figure 69, a schematic of the connector cross section demonstrates the details of the connection mechanism. Ceramic ferrules on the connector ends are kept in alignment by a sleeve in the connector bulkhead adapter. The fibre itself is mounted in the exact center of the ferrule. When the ferrules are aligned by the sleeve, so are the bres. Springs in the connector bodies provide consistent pressure so that the two connector end faces are assured to be in contact with each other. Since all tolerances must be kept extremely tight, it is amazing that the typical connector signal loss is usually less than a couple tenths of a dB. When using optical connectors, insert or remove the ferrule straight into the sleeve. Try to minimize wiggling the connector as this may loosen the tight t between the ferrule and sleeve. For SC connectors, orient the prominent key on the connector body (Figure 68) with the slot in bulkhead adapter. Push the connector until it clicks. To remove, pinch the connector body between your thumb and nger, and gently pull straight out. FC connectors require more care. Find the small key and orient it with the equally small slot in the threaded section of the bulkhead adapter. Even in Figure 68, this key is not very visible. Thread the outer barrel only lightly nger tight. Never use pliers! Over tightening the barrel will not improve signal transmission and could cause permanent damage. To remove, unscrew the barrel, and gently pull it straight out. Most problems with FC connectors are due to key misalignment. This is difficult to detect since even when the key is misaligned,
72 Fibre Channel Module

the barrel can be threaded, which then hides the misaligned key. A hint is when the barrel only catches the first one or two threads. Also, the connector will not be completely seated in the bulkhead adapter. Cleaning Optical Fibre Fibre optic connectors must be kept clean to ensure long life and to minimize transmission loss at the connection point. When not in use, always replace dust covers and caps to prevent deposits and lms from airborne particles. A single dust particle caught between two connectors will cause signicant signal loss. Even worse, dust particles can scratch the polished bre end, resulting in permanent damage. Do not touch the connector end or the ferrules, since this will leave an oily deposit from your fingers. Likewise, do not allow uncapped connectors to drop on the floor. Should a bre connector become dirty or exhibit high loss, carefully clean the entire ferrule and end face. Special lint-free pads should be used with isopropyl alcohol. Even though not very accessible, the end face in a bulkhead adapter on test equipment can be cleaned by using a special lint-free swab, again with isopropyl alcohol. In extreme cases, a test unit may require more thorough cleaning at the factory. Cotton, paper, or solvents should never be used for cleaning since they may leave behind particles or residues. Use a bre optic cleaning kit especially made for cleaning optical connectors, and follow the directions. Some kits come with canned air to blow any dust out of the bulkhead adapters. Be cautious, as canned air can do more harm than good if not used properly. Again, follow the directions that come with the kit. Eye Safety It is good safety practice to never look directly into the end of a fibre or bulkhead adapter. You may be working with equipment that transmits at high power and are not eye-safe. For added safety, turn the laser off when not in use. In any case, the wavelengths used in telecommunications are not visible, so the presence of an optical signal cannot be determined by looking into the fibre end. Summary Take care of your fibre. Always replace dust covers. Keep optical connectors clean and make a practice of not looking into fibre ends.
