Founder of Republic of Turkey and the Great Turkish Leader: Mustafa Kemal ATATURK Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was born in 1881 in Thessaloniki, which now belongs to Greece. He was a military officer in the Ottoman Empire. His legendary success was the defeat of the Allied Forces at World War 1 at the Dardanelles (Canakkale). In 1919, following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire at World War 1, he had led the Turkish National Movement in the Turkish War of Independence. In 1923 Ataturk established the Republic of Turkey and was unanimously elected as its first President. Under Ataturks leadership, a modern Turkey was built upon his many reforms.

A Mythical Story
Maiden Tower in Istanbul: There once was a Byzantine princess. Her father went to a fortune teller and the fortune teller said that his daughter was going to die from a snake bite. So her father put her into a small castle in the middle of the sea, Bosporus straight. One day she was eating grapes that her father sent. They were carefully picked out but in the basket of grapes a poisonous snake was hidden. Unfortunately the snake bit her on her tongue and she died.
