"But faith was noant for tines like these

.And i f we take God'.s hand

'
'

With loving wisdon, He will help

Our hearts to understand."

What a Joy it is to he alive today to see a Uew Year ahead, with abundant opportunities to show that life'in Christ is the only life of true ooy and peace.

'

For'several nonths Christians prayed for the nissionaries (especially

the Schauh faiiily and Phyllis Hine) in the Congo. When word cane that : Phyllis had been nurdered, it stren^'thened our faith in the Lord because'
she \'j<xs safe as well as the Schaubs who arrived in Auerica. We deterninod-: .

to face danf.er as these. brave_jaiss_ionaries _if we.qiist.... Perhaps .nany. g f ^ . ^ you have.^read these words fron Betty Morse, who lives in-danger in Burna,
"I believe that Auerica will not continue to escape the wars and pestilences that afflict the other nations, and I think it v/ould be good if our" .

Anerican Christians could build up their faith before trouble-cones."

I t takes brave deeds and words like these to renind us a l l that we :

"tilts everlasting arns of our eternal God. ;<-:ain, at this tine of the year, uy heart was tiirilled with ooy of

.friendship; the cards and nessat^es were personal and, as I read each one^

..J-.

I thou^'ht,'! wish I could tell" then how much their friendship neans to. m e The day after Christmas, I flew to Lanai, the Pineapple Island, to visit ny very desir friend, Gay, and her husband. It was wonderful to see the Christian hone they had established since their narriage in July. There xvas prayer at every neal, Bible and pictures of Christ in the hone. We atteude.d the Baptist nission and had wonderful fellowship with the Christians there. Sunday evening, we had the Lord's jSuppor in her hone and we felt the strenjjthening bond of our faith in the-Lord at His table. Most of. you have your own children to love and -"look after," so I have

"adopted" Gay as ny own.

Lanai is primitive, conpared to this Island or

to your state. The population of 2500 is Filipino and Japanese^ hones are snail and plain, the jeep is the nain neans of transportation. There is one t^wn, -called Lanai - C i t y - , ' P i n o n - A p f f l o fiisJiAg J.,iifiOii revolves around pineapples 1 There was' a feelinij of isolo.tion as the only neans of travel to and fron the island is the plane. Due to nechanical

troubles, ny flight was cancelled and I was e^^ounded until the next norning;. , My step-nother, Carrie,;frou Kaine visited ne for two weeks in Uecenber. We took in nany si^^hts on .Oahu but nuch of her tine v/a.s spent
out here at Sunset Beach.,
of nud,

The last week i t rained and we lived in.a sea

.

This "nuddy" season continued for two weeks and our school ^:round' ^
was sloppy, we had to cancel our school Christnas play as it was an outdoor pageant, x^ach day brought new and harder rains. All buildings .:

This v/as a very big job and it was necessary to do' this before ternites
caused nore dana^e to our buildin^^s. It gave us satisfaction to know that

on school property underwent ternite funii^ation frpn Deceuber 21-23.

In October, I traded ny old Ford for a 196^ (Denonstrator) Hanbler

It was a very- quick sale as I knew I had to ^et rid'of ny. : .
I like the new car and appreciate the

car v;hile it was still running,

help fron nany of you.

I have finance^ it throui^h ny bank and nonthly

paynents will continue for two years. This is the first tine I have ever t^-one -in debt but- as nany of you -say "Welcone .to-the .club"-i'--X-had doubts" at first-yet, I should have had faith. I didn't want to call for help as I read of the nany calls fron nissionaries but the Lord knows hov^ to handle our needs. This car is used to carry 7 children to Hauula tv;o , afternoons a week this is a ret;ular part of its use. One afternoon,' it

takes Mr and Mrs. Still calling in Hauula. , ' As we think of our school needs for the next year, v/e would like to
put out a call for a prinary teacher and a nan who is qualified to be a principal of this Christian school. For 12 years I have carried this, responsibility as.vjell as teaching. I do not feel qualified to continue as the school progresses. It v;ill further its pro^^ress if we have a capable principal.
The new classroon is about finished. Don Roth has 'done nost" of the

"w.ork himself. The new church buildinj. in Waialua is proG^essing nicely with Glen Powell working steadily and, for the nost part, alone.
Teaching is still rewarding after 25 years in the classroon. Chil

dren are so lovable

everyone wanted to be first but it was Debra who said, "I want

to "bo the^last onci to do i t first."

Pcitcr (1st tirade),- "I'n sharpening] your A pencil(red grading pencil they love those red A' a). Dic.ime (1st grade), - "Oh, I heard a bad word."
Children: "What?"

Dianne: "Be Quiet." These are islands of ronance.

In October, one of our 1956 graduates

Don bccai^e a Christian a few

(Sunset Beach Christian School), jiildora McDougall, was uarried to Donald

Jaiies a.t the Pearl Harbor Christian Church,

Sundays before his narriage and iiildora had been a faithful Christian for
nany years. Her uother and sisters are new uenbers of Kalihi Church of Christ in Honolulu, were thrilled to see one of "our" graduates faith

ful, to the church, establish a Christian hone. The luau that followed the wedding was typically flawaiian poi, roast pig, sweet potato, octopus, raw fish, seaweed, taro leaves. Hundreds were served.

Then caue news of the engagement of one of "our" young nen who has been studying for the uinistry at San Jose Bible College, Clifford Su^awara frou the Pearl Harbor church. Plans to narry Francine next sunner.

He had the special privilege of baptizing Francine into Christ this Fall. One of our young wouen fron the Sunset Beach Church, a graduate of the University of Hawaii, wrote ue of her disbelief in God. This is the influence of teaching of some of our "University professors that v;reck a Christian's faith. It is ny prayer that she will not close her uind to this decision and that she will let the Holy Spirit do His work to re
establish her f a i t h .

The Oriental people ^

celebrate New Year's with firecrackersa

clean house, everything in order. It is the Christian's privilege to start each week right, beginning in the Lord's House at the Lord's Table.

I'li thankful for each year because we're "one year closer Hone." I pray .'that our thoughts this year can be "all of Thee and none of self."
In love,
Jessica Floyd
