Teaching of Undergraduate Courses

All lecture courses will be taught by Institute faculty. Laboratory courses will be conducted by laboratory instructors in consultation with the faculty-in-charge and with help from laboratory assistants and teaching assistants (graduate students). Graduate students will conduct tutorial classes for the lecture courses.

Assignment of Majors and Minors

The basic knowledge of all major areas of science gained in the first 3 semesters will allow a student to make an informed choice of the area of specialization. At the end of the third semester, each student will be asked to give 3 preferences for the Major and 3 preferences for the Minor. Each student is guaranteed to get one of the 3 preferences that (s)he has given for the Major and the Minor. The assignment of Majors and Minors will be based primarily on the academic performance in the first 3 semesters. Selection of a Minor is not compulsory.

Unique Features of the BS Programme

A distinctive four-year UG programme to attract the best young talent in India to explore the frontiers and excitement of science Balanced blend of core science and interdisciplinary topics to serve as a platform for attractive career opportunities in academia and industry

Undergraduate Learning at a Research Institute

IISc will provide an inquiry-based learning experience in an environment in which high-quality research is practiced and valued. Active researchers will bring the excitement of doing science into their teaching. Students will have exposure to contemporary research at a relatively early stage of their career. The project in the fourth year of the BS programme will provide valuable research experience.

Interdisciplinary Nature of the BS Programme

Contemporary research is increasingly multi-disciplinary in nature and modern industry requires personnel with expertise in a variety of fields. The BS programme of IISc will prepare the students for exciting career opportunities by providing a solid foundation in all areas of science and specialization in a specific field. Compulsory basic courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, engineering and humanities in the first 3 semesters. Option of choosing a major and a minor in different subjects. Two major streams (Materials and Environmental Science) that are intrinsically multi-disciplinary in nature. Opportunity to do the 4th-year project in an interdisciplinary area.

Exposure to Disciplines in Engineering

Thee compulsory courses in engineering disciplines in the first three semesters will equip the students with the basic skills (electronics, computation, statistics) required in any field of research and development. Students will take several (three or more) other courses in engineering departments. The knowledge and skills gained in these courses will make them eligible for exciting employment opportunities immediately after graduation.

First 4-year BS Programme in India

The material taught in the present 3-year BSc + 2-year MSc courses can be covered quite well in four years if repetitions are avoided. A 4-year BS course will bring parity between undergraduate programmes in science and engineering. Several expert panels constituted for finding ways to improve science education in India have recommended the introduction of 4-year BS programmes. The 4-year format is expected to become the norm in the near future. Graduates of the 4-year programme will be eligible for all career opportunities that are currently available to students with MSc degrees in science.

Career Opportunities in Academics

IISc and almost all IITs admit students with bachelor degrees in their PhD programmes in engineering. Therefore, BS graduates will be eligible for joining Masters and PhD programmes in engineering. Qualification in GATE may be required for admission in some Institutes. BS graduates will be eligible for admission in PhD programmes in science departments after qualifying in an appropriate examination such as CSIR-NET. B.S. graduates will be eligible for admission in PhD programmes abroad because most universities abroad require 10+2+4 years of study.

BS graduates are expected to be recruited by:

Government R&D organizations such as ISRO, DRDO Labs, CSIR Labs, and DAE centres. GE, GM, Honeywell, Robert Bosch, Applied Materials, Strand Life Sciences, Biocon, Reddy Labs, and other leading multinational and bio-tech companies. IT giants such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro, IBM, Microsoft and Accenture.
