WebCT Site: - There is a website for this course on WebCT (http://www.uoit.ca/connect/). - All important information related to this course, including this course outline, announcements, test schedules, lab manual and lecture notes will be posted there. - The site will be updated regularly so visit it frequently. - It is recommended that all questions related to course materials should be directed to the WebCT discussion boards so that all students can benefit from the answers. - Students are encouraged to discuss and/or answer each others questions in a professional manner. Laboratories Lab Coordinator: Dr. Richard Bartholomew (Richard.Bartholomew@uoit.ca) - Because chemistry is, at its very heart, an experimental science you must achieve a grade of 7.5/15 on the laboratories to receive a passing grade in the course. - Laboratory experiments will be conducted to emphasize and illustrate the concepts presented in the lectures. - Laboratory sessions are 2 hours long. There is one experiment every two weeks for a total of six experiments. - Attendance in laboratories is mandatory.

The first five laboratory reports must be submitted by the beginning of the next laboratory period. The last laboratory report must be submitted by the end of the laboratory period. Safety goggles and lab coats are mandatory for the lab. The lab manual is available for download on the WebCT site. Chemistry 1800 labs and tutorials will begin on Monday January 12th 2009

Policy on Carry Forward of Laboratory Marks If you should fail the course but pass the laboratory portion, you may be eligible to carry forward your laboratory marks. That is, you may be able to repeat the course without having to repeat the laboratories. In order to qualify for this option a number of conditions must be met including: - You must have completed all the laboratory work with a passing grade. - You may only carry forward the mark to the next offering of Chemistry 1800U. - You must apply to Sarah Innes, Student Advisor for the Faculty of Science, for the carry forward within 14 days of the release of grades by the Registrars Office. - Your application to carry forward must be approved by the Dean of the Faculty of Science (or designate). Other conditions also apply; these will be explained if you apply for the carry forward. Tutorials - Problems relating to the lecture material will be suggested to develop problem solving skills and to reinforce the material presented in lectures. - The tutorials are designed to provide assistance with course material and with the problem sets. - Attendance at the tutorials is not mandatory, but if you are having trouble with the material, it is advisable that you seek help in the tutorial sessions. - Chemistry 1800 labs and tutorials will begin on Monday January 12th 2009 Quizzes: - At the end of every tutorial a 15-20 minute quiz will be given. - The quiz will cover material already discussed the previous week. - If you are not present at the time of the quiz you will receive a mark of 0 for the quiz. - There will be six quizzes in total - 5 will each be worth 2% of your final mark for a total of 10% (your lowest grade will be dropped) Academic Integrity - Except for exams and tests, it is assumed that you can discuss problems and assignments among yourselves and with tutors and the professor, so long as what you turn in is your own work. In other words, the discussions are part of the learning process; once you learn how to approach a problem, you are expected to solve it yourself, write up your own submission, and that is what you turn in. - It is dishonest to turn in as your own any work which has been copied from the work of someone else.

Turnitin.com UOIT has recently amended its policy regarding Turnitin.com, which can be found here: http://www.uoit.ca/calendar/0607/assets/Academic~Calendar/calendar~PDFs/Calendar_Section0 5.pdf UOIT is committed to the fundamental values of preserving academic integrity as defined in UOIT policies and contained in the UOIT Calendar. UOIT and faculty members reserve the right to use electronic means to detect and help prevent plagiarism. Students agree that by taking this course all assignments are subject to submission for textual similarity review to Turnitin.com. Assignments submitted to Turnitin.com will be included as source documents in Turnitin.com's restricted access database solely for the purpose of detecting plagiarism in such documents for five academic years. The faculty member may require students to submit their assignments electronically to Turnitin.com or the faculty member may submit questionable text on behalf of a student. The terms that apply to UOIT's use of the Turnitin.com service are described on the Turnitin.com website. If a student objects to the use of Turnitin.com, that student must sign and submit the Assignment Cover Sheet and that work will not be submitted to Turnitin.com This cover sheet available on the course website on WebCT. Students who have any concerns about the use of Turnitin.com are encouraged to include the signed cover letter on all assignment. Student will not be penalized for opting out of the Turnitin.com service. I will only use Turnitin.coms services if I have reason to suspect plagiarism in a particular case.

Class Policies - If you should miss term test or the final exam due to illness or bereavement, you must provide documentation to Sarah Innes (science student advisor) within five (5) days of the test or exam. An official form is available from her (and from the Registrars Office) and you must use this form. - If you should miss a Laboratory due to illness or bereavement, you must provide documentation to Richard Bartholomew within five (5) days of theLaboratory. An official form is available from Sarah Innes (academic advisor) (and from the Registrars Office) and you must use this form. - In rare cases laboratories may be re-scheduled but this is dependent on availability. - Term tests will not be re-scheduled; the marks apportioned to a missed term test will be added to the marks apportioned for the final exam. - If the final exam is missed and acceptable documentation is provided, the student will be eligible to write a deferred exam early in the following semester. - Students may be excused from laboratories, term tests and the final exam due to religious observance. However, application to be excused must be submitted to Sarah Innes at least seven (7) days in advance of the observance. - Please consult the science webpage (http://science.uoit.ca) for complete policy details.
