Deploying a WiMAX Network

Architecture Options Overview

Todays WiMAX deployments demand many different Network
Architectures
Traditional Mobile Networks utilise Mobile IP, and require an intelligent core network Enterprise networks may require end-to-end VLAN support (Layer 2) Vertical applications may require local connectivity over Ethernet connections

Airspans SDR based Base Stations have been developed to

enable the flexibility to adapt to the required Network Architecture
This enables the Network Architecture to be designed independently from the air interface (16d / 16e) 16e today is becoming a popular choice for Wireless Broadband not simply because of its mobility, but because of the standardization and economies of scale. Interoperability is real! The CPE price is dramatically lower compared to 16d.

WiMAX Forum NWG Architecture, consisting of

ASN-GW, AAA and optional HA

Simplified Architecture, removing the need for ASNGW,

AAA & HA

User Provisioning is provided by the AAA Supports Handover and Mobile IP (optional) Internet connectivity is provided via the core
network components

AAA can be optionally included to provide EAP

Authentication

User Provisioning is provided by the EMS system Local Bridging allows connectivity directly from the BS Enables use of end-to-end VLANs

Dual Architecture Deployments

A Hybrid mode allows the network to support both architectures using the same
air interface
This mode provides full flexibility, and enables individual services to be delivered over the most appropriate architecture This unique approach ensures the network is fully optimised for each service being offered It is ideally suited to mixed SME/Business and Residential Networks

Local breakout of SME/Business traffic prevents tromboning of business to business traffic and reduces backhaul overheads.

Expanding to Support Mobility & Value Add features

A Hybrid mode allows the network to support both layer 2 and layer 3
architectures using the same air interface
This mode provides full flexibility, and enables individual services to be delivered over the most appropriate architecture This unique approach ensures the network is fully optimised for each service being offered It is ideally suited to mixed SME/Business, Residential & Mobile Networks

Supports Additional Value-Add Services:

Wholesale Networks Pre-paid Accounting User Roaming Mobility
