AMLS Provider Course Objectives

Chapter 1: Assessment of the Medical Patient Cognitive Objectives


Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1.  Identify and manage life-threatening presentations for a variety of medical emergencies. 2.  Discuss the components of a comprehensive patient history, focused physical examination and diagnostic ndings, and their implications for appropriate patient care. 3.  Compare and contrast the concepts of clinical decision making, pattern recognition, and clinical reasoning used in the determination of differential diagnoses.

Psychomotor Objectives
Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1.  Demonstrate, with prociency, the application of the AMLS Assessment Pathway to determine appropriate differential diagnoses and management pathways. 2. Perform an accurate comprehensive patient assessment with no critical errors. 3.  Utilize a patient assessment history, focused physical examination, and diagnostic ndings to determine accurate differential diagnoses and management pathways.

Chapter 2: Altered Mental Status and Neurologic Disorders Cognitive Objectives


Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1.  Recognize the signs and symptoms of altered mental status and abnormal neurological function. 2.  Discuss the pathophysiology of a variety of neurologic disorders that cause patients to present with alterations in mentation. 3.  Identify alterations in mentation and abnormalities in neurologic function that require emergency interventions. 4.  Compare and contrast key assessment ndings to formulate a variety of neurologic differential diagnoses and management strategies.

Psychomotor Objectives
Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1. Perform an accurate basic neurologic physical examination. 2.  Demonstrate, with prociency, the application of the AMLS Assessment Pathway to determine appropriate differential diagnoses, management pathways, and transport decisions for a variety of neurologic disorders. 3.  Modify, with accuracy, differential diagnoses and treatment strategies from key ndings in patient history, physical examination, and diagnostic ndings.

Chapter 3: Respiratory Dysfunction Cognitive Objectives


Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of respiratory distress versus respiratory failure. 2.  Discuss the pathophysiology of a variety of respiratory disorders that cause patients to present with difculty in breathing. 3.  Identify respiratory system differential diagnoses that require emergency interventions. 4.  Discuss appropriate use of a variety of basic and advanced airway adjuncts used to manage the airway and increase oxygenation and ventilation in patients with respiratory complaints. 5.  Compare and contrast key assessment ndings to formulate a variety of respiratory system differential diagnoses and management strategies.

Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1. Perform an accurate respiratory system physical examination. 2.  Demonstrate, with prociency, the application of the AMLS Assessment Pathway to determine appropriate differential diagnoses, management pathways, and transport decisions for a variety of respiratory system disorders. 3.  Modify, with accuracy, differential diagnoses and treatment strategies from key ndings in patient history, physical examination, and diagnostic ndings.

Chapter 4: Shock Cognitive Objectives


Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of compensated and decompensated shock. 2. Discuss the pathophysiology and signs and symptoms for various types of shock. 3.  Identify the classications and stages of shock that require emergency interventions. 4.  Discuss appropriate treatment interventions for the different classications and stages of shock.

Psychomotor Objectives
Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1.  Perform, with accuracy, a physical examination on a patient with the signs and symptoms of the various types of shock. 2.  Demonstrate, with prociency, the application of the AMLS Assessment Pathway to determine appropriate differential diagnoses, management pathways, and transport decisions for a variety of shock presentations. 3.  Modify, with accuracy, differential diagnoses and treatment strategies from key ndings in patient history, physical examination, and diagnostic ndings.

Chapter 5: Chest Discomfort Cognitive Objectives


Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1.  Recognize the signs and symptoms of a patient with chest discomfort and pain complaints. 2.  Discuss the pathophysiology of a variety of cardiovascular disorders that cause patients to present with chest discomfort or pain. 3.  Identify cardiovascular system differential diagnoses that require emergency interventions. 4.  Discuss the application of leads and interpretation of ndings for a 12-lead electrocardiogram. 5.  Compare and contrast key assessment ndings to formulate a variety of chest discomfort and pain differential diagnoses and management strategies.

Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1. Perform an accurate cardiovascular system physical examination. 2. Chapter 6: Abdominal Discomfort Cognitive Objectives


Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of acute abdominal discomfort complaints. 2.  Discuss the pathophysiology of a variety of gastrointestinal and reproductive system disorders that cause patients to present with acute abdominal pain. 3.  Identify abdominal system differential diagnoses that require emergency interventions. 4.  Compare and contrast key assessment ndings to formulate a variety of gastrointestinal and reproductive system differential diagnoses and management strategies.

Chapter 7: Endocrine, Metabolic, and Environmental Disorders Cognitive Objectives


Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1.  Recognize the signs and symptoms of variety of endocrine, metabolic, and environmental disorders. 2.  Discuss the pathophysiology of a variety of endocrine, metabolic, and environmental disorders. 3.  Identify endocrine, metabolic, and environmental disorder differential diagnoses that require emergency interventions. 4.  Compare and contrast key assessment ndings to formulate a variety of endocrine, metabolic, and environmental differential diagnoses and management strategies.

Chapter 8: Infectious Disease Cognitive Objectives


Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of a variety of infectious diseases. 2. Discuss the pathophysiology of a variety of infectious diseases. 3.  Identify infectious disease differential diagnoses that require emergency interventions. 4.  Compare and contrast key assessment ndings to formulate a variety of infectious disease differential diagnoses and management strategies.

Psychomotor Objectives
Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1.  Perform an accurate physical examination on a patient with signs and symptoms of an infectious disease. 2.  Demonstrate appropriate use of body substance isolation on patients with signs and symptoms of infectious diseases. 3.  Demonstrate, with prociency, the application of the AMLS Assessment Pathway to determine appropriate differential diagnoses, management pathways, and transport decisions for a variety of infectious diseases. 4.  Modify, with accuracy, differential diagnoses and treatment strategies from key ndings in patient history, physical examination, and diagnostic ndings.

Chapter 9: Toxicological Emergencies, Hazardous Materials, and Weapons of Mass Destruction Cognitive Objectives
Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1.  Recognize the signs and symptoms of toxicological, hazardous materials, and weapons of mass destruction exposures. 2.  Discuss the pathophysiology of exposure to a variety of toxidromes, hazardous materials, and weapons of mass destruction. 3.  Identify safety concerns related to toxicological, hazardous materials, and weapons of mass destruction exposure presentations that require emergency interventions. 4.  Compare and contrast key assessment ndings to formulate a variety of toxicological, hazardous materials, and weapons of mass destruction exposure differential diagnoses and management strategies.

Psychomotor Objectives
Given a case presentation, the participant will be able to: 1.  Perform an accurate physical examination on patients with toxicologic, hazardous materials, and weapons of mass destruction exposure presentations. 2.  Demonstrate appropriate body substance isolation procedures for patients with toxicologic, hazardous materials, and weapons of mass destruction exposure presentations. 3.  Demonstrate, with prociency, the application of the AMLS Assessment Pathway to determine appropriate differential diagnoses, management pathways, and transport decisions for a variety of toxicologic, hazardous materials, and weapons of mass destruction exposure presentations. 4.  Modify, with accuracy, differential diagnoses and treatment strategies from key ndings in patient history, physical examination, and diagnostic ndings.
