Creating Thermal Convective Boundary Conditions

Convective boundary conditions simulate the exchange of heat between a simulation model and a fluid.
Simulates heat transfer to/from fluids. You must specify:

References Convection Coefficient (h) Bulk Temperature (Tb)

Assembly with Convective Conditions Defined LectureNotes Convective Boundary Conditions The convective boundary condition simulates the exchange of heat between the references you specify on your model and a fluid. When creating a convective boundary condition, you will need to specify the following:

References Convection conditions can be applied to any geometrical references (such as points, surfaces, curves, and edges). Convection Coefficient (h) This parameter specifies how much energy will transfer from the references per unit of area, time, and temperature and it can be varied spatially using a symbolic expression, a table, or by using external file data (such as FEM neutral format files). Bulk Temperature (Tb) This parameter specifies the temperature of the fluid surrounding the model to which heat is transferred. It can be varied spatially using a symbolic expression, a table, or by using external file data (such as FEM neutral format files). It can be varied temporally using a symbolic expression or a table.

Procedure: Creating Thermal Convective Boundary Conditions

Scenario
Create thermal convection boundary conditions in a Pro/ENGINEER assembly model. CreateThermConvBC convective_bc.asm

Task 1. Open the Mechanica application and create boundary conditions to simulate a natural convection condition of 2 W/m2K applied to all external faces/surfaces of the assembly components.
1. Click Applications > Mechanica. Note that each of the components already contains surface regions.

2. Click Convection Condition

from the Mechanica toolbar.

3. Click New to create a new boundary condition set. In the Name field, type Conv_Cond_BC and click OK. This is a recommended procedure to ensure that the constraint sets (if more than one) can be easily identified in the analysis definition window.

4. Verify that the References field is set to Surfaces and you select all of the external surfaces, as shown by the mouse cursors in the figure. You will need to make a total of 19 selections, and the mouse cursors shown in solid black indicate a hidden reference.

5. In the Convection Coefficient (h) section of the dialog box:

Verify that the Spatial Variation field is set to Uniform. Type 2 in the Value field, and set the units field to W/(m^2 K). Verify that the Spatial Variation field is set to Uniform. Verify that the Temporal Variation field is set to Steady. Type 25 in the Value field. Verify that the unit field is set to C.

6. In the Bulk Temperature (Tb) section of the dialog box:

7. The Convective Condition dialog box should appear as shown in the figure. Click OK to close the dialog box and complete the Convective Condition.

8. The model should now appear as shown.

9. Return to the Standard Pro/ENGINEER mode by clicking Applications > Standard. 10. Click Save from the main toolbar and click OK to save the model. > OK to erase the models from

11. Click File > Erase > Current > Select All memory. This completes the procedure.
