Standard: SS2H1 The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures in Georgia history. a. Identify the contributions made by these historic figures: James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove (founding of Georgia); Sequoyah (development of a Cherokee alphabet); Jackie Robinson (sports); Martin Luther King, Jr. (civil rights); Jimmy Carter (leadership and human rights).
Established Goal: The students will have a deeper understanding of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and why he is remembered and studied today. Students will create a timeline of the important events in Martin Luther King Jr.s life. Understandings: The students will understand that Martin Luther King Jr. played a major role in the civil rights movement. Students will understand the contributions of Martin Luther King Jr. Students will be able to discuss the major events of the civil rights movement that involved MLK. Essential Questions: 1. What contributions did Martin Luther King Jr. make to the civil rights movement? 2. What were the important events in MLKs life? 3. Why are MLKs contributions remembered today? 4. What are civil rights? 5. Why was the civil rights movement important for America?

Performance Tasks
Students will create a timeline of the important events of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. They may use computer software or other mediums to create the timeline. The timeline will be presented to the class. (Apply, Interpret)

Evidence
1. After reading the book and listening to the School Tube video, the students will take an AR test on the book. (Explain) 2. Students write a quick response on why they believe segregation and the Jim Crow laws were wrong. (Perspective, SelfKnowledge, Interpret) 3. Matching quiz. Students will match a date with an important event. (Explain) 4. Write a daily journal of how it feels to be in a segregated school setting. (Empathy) 5. Students will self-grade their work. (SelfKnowledge)

Learning Plan
Day One 1. Begin unit by creating a class timeline of our day. Discuss all the important elements that should be included in the timeline. (W) 2. Students will read a copy of the book Martins Big Words by Doreen Rappaport. They will then watch the School Tube video of the book. (H) Available at http://www.schooltube.com/video/434d53dc81da4fdbabf7/ 3. The once the students have read the book and viewed the School Tube Video, the students will take an AR test over the book. (E-1) Day Two 4. Class will begin discussion of the civil rights movement. We will discuss what the civil rights movement was and why it was important. Focus of the discussion will be on Georgias involvement. Reading article found at http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/nge/Article.jsp?id=h-2716 Discussing segregation, Jim Crow laws, and the Brown v. Board of Education decision. This will help introduce Martin Luther King Jr. (R) 5. Students will watch PowerPoint presentation on the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and his contributions to the civil rights movement. (H) 6. Students will write a response to the discussion of the Jim Crow laws and segregation and discuss why they believe these things were wrong. (R, E-2) Day Three 7. Talking about the beginning of the civil rights movement. Discuss Rosa Parks and the Birmingham

Bus boycott. Students read The Story Behind the Bus which can be found at http://www.thehenryford.org/exhibits/rosaparks/story.asp Students can also explore more about the civil rights movement here. Students will be broken into groups and discuss their plan for making their timeline. (T) Day Four and Five 8. Students will have the opportunity to research the life of Martin Luther King Jr. for the purposes of creating their timeline. They may have time to research on the computer as well as check out books from the media center. The students will compile facts and in their groups discuss how they will put together their timeline and what medium they will use to present. (T,O) 9. Students can use the provided links to assist in their research. (T, R) Conclusion 10. When students are finished putting together their presentations, they will present the timelines to the class. Students will self-assess their projects and their process. (R,E-2) 11. Students will take a matching test over Martin Luther King Jr. The test will have the students match the important dates in the life of MLK with a specific event.
