Although the hybrid FEMAnalytical approach can also yields partly populated coupling matrix, but the global stiffness matrix remains symmetric positive definite. In the previous paper [1] the authors presented a hybrid approach with circular fictitious coupling boundary for calculation of the potential distribution for an arrestor with symmetrical electric field. AbstractIn this paper, a hybrid finite elementanalytical approach for 3D potential calculation for a station class ZnO surge arresters for 1100kV substation is presented. In this hybrid approach a circular cylinder surface fictitious coupling boundary is employed to divide the infinite region into two an interior region and an exterior region. The field in the interior region involving a ZnO surge arrester of which the medium and configuration are complicated is discretized using finite element method, and meanwhile the field in the exterior region involving a homogeneous medium the eigenfunction expansion is represented. Many factors influencing on the visitors potential distribution are discussed. At lasts an appropriate grading ring configuration is suggested.

ITRODUCTION

Zinc Oxide (ZnO) surge arrester is an important protection device in power system. It is known that nouniformity of potential distribution of the varistors would reduce the service lifetime of Zinc Oxide surge arresters and is more evident as the increasing of the height of an arrester. Improving the nouniformity is an important goal in the design of an arrester, especially for ultra high voltage transmission system (UHV). Usually the grading rings are used to improve this nouniformity. Moreover, the configurations of the grading rings need to be investigated. Fig. 1 shows the configuration of a ZnO surge arrester for 1100kV substation.

CONCLUSION

In this paper a hybrid finite elementanalytical approach with a circular cylinder surface fictitious coupling boundary for open 3D electric field problem is presented. The coupling boundary can circumscribe the shape of the arrester closely and lead to the reduction in size of the finite element computation domain. The approach is used to analysis the potential distribution and to determine the structure of the grading rings of the arrester.
