– EIS: Electronic Ignition Switch (N73); Also serving as a gateway for
diagnosing CAN-B components not hard-wired to X11/4
– ICM: Instrument Cluster (A1)
– SCM: Steering Column Module (N80)

• Control units not directly connected to either CAN-B or CAN-C:

– SRS: Supplemental Restraint System (N2/7)

Systems Diagnosis Control Module
(SD)

(N55)
11
SD Function
• Monitors CAN-B control modules during driving
• Provides DTCs related to CAN-B communication problems and for
modules which are not communicating properly
• Monitors DTCs plus information inputs & outputs of CAN-B modules
• Determines affected functions and suspected components
• Narrows down the list of suspected components
• Could decide that all components in a particular electrical “path”
category are suspected
• Informs DAS via X11/4:
– What might be wrong
– What to check in sequence
– Requests component activation
• Provides information on the cause of an ATA triggering event

12
SD Advantages
• Easier diagnosis of difficult CAN-B complaints in spite of
– Complexity of CAN-B
– Increased networking (sharing of components & wiring)
• Can be used in addition to a Short Test
• Provides 3 types of DTCs related to CAN-B communication problems
– SD “knowledge base” deficiencies
– Certain control modules communicating in single-wire mode
– Any CAN-B module no longer communicating
• All CAN-B module DTCs are registered and compared
• Logic used to identify shared failures
• Possible causes/remedies are listed in order of likelihood
• Will assist in diagnosing intermittent faults
• Can erase codes in CAN-B modules

13
SD Notes
• SD has no effect on vehicle operation if disconnected
• SD assistance is limited to CAN-B faults
• A DTC must be present before SD can help
• SD cannot diagnose software problems (erroneous codes) in the
monitored ECUs
• There is an “onboard knowledge base” within SD
– Matched to the vehicle (country, equipment and function)
– Matched to the capabilities of the CAN-B control modules
• SD cannot effectively diagnose CAN-B failures if the “onboard
knowledge base” is not updated when necessary
– Flashing of SD is required when SD is replaced
– Flashing of SD may be required when CAN-B modules are replaced

14
Location of N55

One 12-pin connector:

+ 12 volts (t.30)
Chassis ground
CAN-B wires
K-line to X11/4

Located at right in passenger side footwell

To access: Remove glovebox and A-pillar cover in footwell area
15
Flashing SD with SDS Equipment

• Attach SDS to vehicle and use DAS to complete the following steps:
Main groups > Control units > Body > System diagnosis > Program
control unit in compliance with factory specifications > don’t change
anything in the next screen, “Knowledge base configuration” > F2 >
don’t change anything in the next screen, “Knowledge base
configuration/special equipment” > F2
Flashing will then occur. Finish by erasing DTCs.

16
System Diagnosis (SD)
In Diagnostic Assistance System, from Main groups menu, select:
- Interior diagnosis covering all control units (system diagnosis)
or
- Control units > Body > System diagnosis

Group: 00.30 & 54.21

Control unit designation: N55
U.S. Introduction: MY2003 R230
Major components: SD control module
CAN-B connection to X30/16
MILs: No
Warning messages in IC? No
DTC capable? Yes
Control unit adaptation? Program “knowledge base” in SD when
it is exchanged
Update “knowledge base”after replacing
any CAN-B module
Requires Control unit adaptation in: No other control unit
