CHAPTER I Introduction

On the Job Training (OJT) is a training that occurs in the specialized field. It is a chance to apply the learnings that they tackled in classroom. It also helps the students to acquire relevant knowledge and skills by performing in actual work setting. OJT will generally be the primary method used for broadening employee skills and increasing productivity. It is particularly appropriate for developing proficiency skills unique to an employee's job - especially jobs that are relatively easy to learn and require locally-owned equipment and facilities. The goal of on the job training (OJT) program is to provide opportunities for the students from a specific job that involves the acquisition of specific skills and employment competencies . On the other hand, an effective OJT program also benefits the companies who accept trainees. First OJT or intern provides additional manpower for a lesser labor cost than a regular employee. Most of them are all eager to learn the ropes so chances are high that theyll be given a chance to work on the same company as an employee after graduating.. While in training, employers are in fact also teach their employees to guide the trainees by stretching their patience, develop technical skills and make them more sensitive to the needs and mind set of the younger generation. The course of supervision also teaches them how to share what they know and be receptive to questions. Hence, the apprenticeship also becomes an avenue in training for future engineers of the company.

CHAPTER IV- OJT ACTIVITIES

NARRATIVE EXPERIENCES It was the submission of requirements for our training. They entertain us at the business office indeed we were waiting in the supervisor. After a few minutes, we were enter the security room for as to interview but suddenly the security gave us the opportunity to see the field if how we get interested applying from them. There was a fiber break in Tamontaka Maguindanao and that was the first I saw a fiber optic cable and also the equipments in splicing such as fiber cutter, fiber clip, and the fusion splicer. That day was our orientation. They introduced the facilities and equipments in order to familiarize it and also the proper time of the rest and dismissal. In the first day of our regular training they introduced us in the software equipments. They said that there must be always updating of equipments if there is a new trend and always maintain the software if there is a problem from the subscriber. On the other day, the workers brought the trainee in the field in order to feel and see the job outside of the office. We went to the cabinets located in along the streets and observe the work of them. Since the first week was all about observation, they also try us to spliced the fiber optic cable as a trial because of the interest and also if the trainee was a very good observant. In the second week, our supervisor introduced the test equipment which is the Optical Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) that used to characterized an optical fiber and it inject a series of optical pulses into a fiber under test. From the OTDR screen, we can determine the actual length of the fiber from the cabinets and the losses if theres a fiber break and also high attenuation. Since we know the used of the OTDR, our supervisor bring us to the field in order to check the fiber line ports from DLC cabinets and relay stations in Midsayap, Pikit, and Upi for us also to visit. They also introduced the Tilendus concentrator and Diginet cards by comparing it. Tilendus concentrator is the upgraded version of diginet card. It can adjust the speed rate through the software and it has more high capacity unlike
13

in diginet, it can undergo an additional of wirings before it can be upgraded. This two are used in myDSL internet. In the third week of our training, we are assigned inside of the office since our mission is to answer the phone calls, web browsing for our final report, and scanning of paper tax bill to computer. In this week, we are also able to splice a fiber optic cable as a practical. From the MSAP room, we spliced the fiber optic cable from the optical distribution frame ports for the expansion of Lamsan Trading. We also test the vacant port of cabinet 35 if it is working or not because there was the live coverage of TV 5 on the election period. In the fourth week of the training, we visit the Cotabato Relay Station located in North Upi, Maguindanao the reason was to delivered crude oil because there will be a rotational brownout thats why its needed by the generator for functioning the microwave communication system. The Cotabato Relay Station is the major relay station because it serves many areas in transmitting and receiving of information in whole Mindanao. After of our visiting in relay station, there was a fire accident happened in Barangay Bolalo, Sultan Kudarat thats why the fiber was affected. We assist in splicing of fiber optic cable in the Qurino bridge for the restoration of fiber communication from Cotabato connecting to Sultan Kudarat. After the operation in Sultan Kudarat, we check the cable of the fiber line port 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 from Cotabato connecting to Sultan Kuadrat using OTDR for the purposed if theres a high attenuation in the transmission line. In our fifth week in the company, we conduct fiber insertion Sultan Kudarat RSU because there was an upgrading installation in Lamsan Trading. After the insertion, we measured the length of the fiber that had spliced in order to know if it is connected between Sultan Kudarat RSU and Lamsan. By enjoying in the field, there was another trouble again in this week. There was a backhaw digging in the national highway and accidentally cut out the fiber cable thats why the internet connection of whole cotabato was currently disconnected. In order to connect it again, we fixed the fiber break with the
14

location of 51 km breakage from PLDT Cotabato to Aleosan by splicing the fiber optic cable. After the splicing in Aleosan, we conduct checking of measure in the ODF ports using OTDR in order to see the connection line is okay in the designation cables. In our last two weeks of training, the workers thought all about the monitoring in software. They have many software that theyre monitored especially the Huawei, UT Starcom, Legacy, Alcatel and Nokia. The monitoring in software can detect any problem in hardware outside such in the cabinets along the street. It will pop the alert icon in the computer if theres a trouble in the equipment and transmission media. We also conduct sending of laser in the cabinet ports in order to see if the light source was detected in the cabinet. Learning is fun. After the services that I gave in the company, I have so many learning that I gained regarding with my confusion. They were willing to helped students as long as they served in the company. I was realized that I gained too much skill also.

OBSERVATION The trainee that was trained in PLDT-Cotabato for almost six weeks, observed the daily activities and practices of the workers inside the company that they are dealing with as well as the rules and regulations that must be followed. The trainee also observed that there must be a twenty four/seven operation in the MinCNet office for controlling and checking in their software in the company. Any worker must have a shifting schedule for completing twenty four hours service in the office. The supervisor was always checking complains and list of installations to remind everybody. The workers are also allowed leaving by 25 days of shifting in one year and also having their day off schedule.

15

In the field, there must be a preparation of tools and test equipment in order to fix the fiber cable, to test the ODF ports in the relay stations, and to install the needs of the subscribers. Lastly, the trainee observed the good relationship of the workers since they were trained in different disciplines before they enter the company as regular employee. Most of them are more than 20 years in service and they were already there before they get married. They always say Patience is a virtue. PARTICIPATION The trainee participated in all activities in the company. In the normal operation of the company, the trainee used the all equipments in their good conditions for experiencing the reality of the job. Actualization of splicing fiber optic cable was one of the best experiences that the trainee focused and enjoyed. The trainee was also assigned in measuring the length of the fiber cables using the OTDR test equipment. Any trouble that will happen in the equipment will cause a big interruption in the company. The workers let the trainees participate in all activities to feel the essence of being a future engineer. INTERACTION The trainee learned to interact with the workers during the ojt at PLDT- Cotabato. We know that people have different characteristics and attitude. However, all of the workers interact with the trainees in such a friendly relationship. As a trainee, he feels comfortable with the workers as do they work in such a normal way. If there is a confusion regarding with their work, the trainee doesnt feel shy to ask some questions. They didnt treat the trainee as an ojt worker but they treated him as a co-worker. They also ask the trainee some questions regarding with his life and studies. Although, working in something is an experience, the quality of the output is the most important. Since all of them are elders, they gave us some advises not only in our works but also in our life. He also learned from the workers the accomplishments and
16

mistakes for he to know the reality of a job. They also encouraged the trainee to strive with his studies until he become a professional. Even though he worked and interact with them in a short period of time, he learned a lot of them. CHALLENGES Being in control of your life and having realistic expectations about your day-to-day challenges are the keys to stress management, which is perhaps the most important ingredient to living a happy, healthy and rewarding life. If you have a positive attitude and constantly strive to give your best effort, eventually you will overcome your immediate problems and find you are ready for greater challenges. In the first week of the training, the trainee has no idea about the telephony system since it was not discussed yet in school. During the training, the trainee met some challenges to push him to work much better. The workers encouraged the trainees to read some electronics and communication books for the preparation in board examination and also to relate it in the field. Another challenge that the trainee experienced was the splicing of fiber optic cable. That was the first time that he encountered the fibers and the tools/equipments for splicing. He thought that it was so difficult because it will need a safety first but suddenly it was so fun. And because of that, the trainee learned to put a dedication to his work. The only source of knowledge is experience. PROBLEMS MET AND SOLUTIONS OFFERED The problem that was always met by the trainee were all related to the optical fiber. Every week, there was always a fiber break in different locations inside and outside of the city. In every fiber break there was also different reasons of damage. The damage of the fibers was affected in data communication. It must be restored within four hours after the damage happen. The trainee also met problem about the microwave communication relay

17

station. Because in the place that has a rotational brownout, it will need an alternative energy to function the microwave communication. In some problems, there was a different solution. Since the trainee met some problem especially in optical fiber, the solution they offered was splicing. They travelled in the specific place where the fiber was breaking bringing with the tools and equipments. After they spliced the fiber optic cable, they measured the actual length in the ODF ports using the optical time domain reflectometer if the fiber break was already fixed. For the microwave communication, since the problem was the rotational brownout, the pldt crew delivered crude oil for the generator for functioning the transmission communication. Those were the problems met by the trainee and solutions offered.

18

CHAPTER V- PERSONAL EVALUATION, CONCLUSSION AND RECOMMENDATION ACCOMPLISHMENT & CONTRIBUTION TO INDUSTRY PARTNER The trainee contributed many memorable moments in the company that they cant forget. Mostly, cleaning the equipments such as patch cords and preparing the tools for field was what he always does to help the employees minimize their works. He was also able to help in office works such as scanning paper tax in computer, typing of report, and also printing of papers. In field, the trainee also helped them to bring the needed equipments. They gave the trainee a chance to work in their capabilities and their skills as what they thought in the orientation. They made the workers amazed in splicing of the fiber break. The trainee was also reminding them if they forgot something. This contribution helped them to minimize their work and finished it for a short period of time. COMPETENCIES/CAPABILITIES GAINED Everyday, the trainee gained about different learning experience in the company. The trainee learned to appreciate the lesson studied in school. He realized the importance of the theories in communication especially in data communication and optical fibers. He also understands the lectures of his supervisor about the flow of the signals in the equipments that they used. They did not limit their knowledge in teaching us, they always giving us an insight about their company and practicum. He also learned to follow the instructions as what the workers said. As an apprentice who works in the company of PLDT, he learned to become a hardworking person. He always become a motivated person because of the daily activity happened. Everyone needs an action after the imagination. This is one of the best ways about participating in the on-the-job-training because it is not only a requirement to be completed but it is an opportunity to show and develop skills.
19

CONCLUSSION Rendering a service to PLDT is a great experience which he can be proud as because of what we all know, it is one of the telecommunication company which branches are located nationwide. He gained knowledge in many things and every idea that thought to him was fruits of his endurance and perseverance to finish the training. Despites of many trials and hard works that he experienced in every minute during his training, he realized that OJT really did good influence and learning for future life. Simply say without it, the future work someday is boneless, no foundation or background at all. The training is the best foundation of all theories that we have encountered in school. Even though the trainee encounters many trials during the training, it was not the hindrance to stop in work but it is a challenge to pursue his dreams. The training will be useful if it is fitted from the major concern of chosen career. It will enhance your skill as well as your memory experience. RECCOMENDATION The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life. Regarding the student with limited knowledge, these training should be more active themselves in seeking more information and learning opportunities to develop the expertise in this approach. The student must need time to learn before they had to apply it in the field. Conducting different activities in the company can make the trainee enhanced skills. The program itself needs to be well prepared in order to make it better. The improvement of the design of activities involved and information provided in the training is important. The trainee also should not always rely on the books because some standards are not matched in the standard of the company. Training needs assessment and program evaluation can play an important role in order to link what trainee need and what is available on the program itself. Student should view their professional learning not only as a learning for acquiring necessary skills for engineering but also learning that involves personal construction and reflective practice.
