TRAINER NOTES

Session No.: 4 Session Title: Making It Work! - Introduction Description: This session will expose course participants (CPs) on the sounds of the English language; in particular the /h/, /b/, /f/, /l/, and /s/ sound. It will also allow the CPs to use the module and get ideas on remedial teaching for the sounds /h/, /b/, /f/, /l/, and /s/. Trainers will also be able to reflect on various practices, which can be conducted in the classroom for the teaching of remedial pupils who have different learning styles and needs. Training Outcomes By the end of this session, CPs will be able to: 1. sound out and identify the phonemes 2. match the phonemes to the sounds 3. explore various activities that can be carried out based on the module provided 20 minutes

Time Resources Session Outline

Activity 1: Knowing your sounds Activity 2: Identify your sounds Activity 3: Write your sounds (at word and phrase level) Knowing your sounds Introduce the phoneme /h/, /b/, /f/, /l/, and /s/. Shows the action of how each individual phoneme is sound out. Demonstrate how to sound it out for the phoneme /h/, /b/, /f/, /l/, and /s/.

Activity 1
Procedure

Refer to pages 1, 16, 25, 50 and 61 (LBI Teachers Module Book 2) Suggested Instructional Language This is how you can demonstrate the sound to your pupils in the classroom: Lets make the /h/ sound. i. Open your mouth a little ii. Push the air out of your mouth to whisper /h//h/ /h/ iii. You can stretch the sound /h/. Identify the sounds! Suggested Instructional Language Show pictures of the objects one by one (Unit 2 Appendix1 pg 18). Say aloud the name of the objects. Show the words. CPs identify the grapheme(s) in the words. Refer to pages 16, 21, 37,56 and 67 (LBI Teachers Module Book 2) Discuss other strategies to identify graphemes in words.

Activity 2
Procedure

Lets try with the /b/ sound: Step 1:

a. Put up the poem chart (pg. 19 LBI Teachers Module Book 2) b. Organise pupils into two groups. c. Read the poem line by line. Pupils repeat. d. Emphasize on the focus words. e. Groups take turns to identify and say the words with the /b/ sound from the poem. Step 2: a. Show Picture 1 and get pupils to talk about the picture. (Appendix 1). b. Show the sentence/phrase strips and read them aloud. (Appendix 4) Ben and Bob like to play

c. Pupils repeat each sentence/phrase twice. d. Repeat the steps (a) to (c) for the rest of the poem. (Appendix 2) e. Recite the poem line by line and pupils follow. f. Pupils recite the poem.

Activity 3
Procedure

Write the sounds! Demonstrate drawing simple strokes for all the letters. Demonstrate the correct way of writing the letters H, B, F, L and S and h, b, f, l, and s Discuss writing strategies in Teachers and Pupils Module. Refer pages 9, 23, 41, 56, and 69. Write the letters F and f on the board and say /f/. Show the correct formation of the letters F and f.

Reflections

Trace the letters F and f and say /f/. Complete the exercise on page 12 in the pupils module (LBI Pupils Module Book 2).
