Can you like without wanting?
Rick Hanson, 2013
This comes from Rick Hanson, Ph.D., neuropsychologist, New York Times best-selling author,
Advisory Board member of the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley, and invited lecturer at
Oxford, Stanford, and Harvard universities.
The Practice
Aspire without attachment.
Why?
To live is to pursue goals. Out of healthy self-interest and kindness to yourself, it's natural and
fine to seek security, success, comfort, enjoyment, creative expression, physical and mental health,
connection, respect, love, self-actualization, and spiritual development.
The question is whether you go after your goals with stress and drivenness - in a word, with
attachment - or with outer effort and inner peacefulness, rewarded by the journey itself no matter the
destination: with aspiration. (Darrells note: Action that flows from a deep trust in God.)
At the heart of attachment is craving - broadly defined - which contains and leads to many
kinds of suffering (from subtle to intense). On the other hand, aspiration - working hard toward your
goals without getting hung up on the results - feels good, plus it helps you stretch and grow without
worrying about looking bad. (Darrells note: This is what we mean when we talk about letting go and letting
God.) Paradoxically, holding your goals lightly increases the chance of attaining them, while being
attached - and thus fearing failure - gets in the way of peak performance. (Darrells note: the first trusts
in God, the second is all about me.)
If you sit on the couch your whole life and never take care of or go after anything important,
you can avoid the pitfalls of attachment. But if you have a job, intimate relationship, family, service,
art, or spiritual calling, the challenge is to stay firm in your course, with dedication and discipline,
centered in aspiration.
How?
Aspiration is about liking, while attachment is about wanting - and these involve separate
systems in your brain. Liking what is pleasant and disliking what is unpleasant are normal and not a
problem. Trouble comes when we tip into the craving and strain inherent in wanting, wanting,
wanting what's pleasant to continue and what's unpleasant to end. So learn to recognize the
differences between liking and wanting in your body, emotions, attitudes, and thoughts. I think
you'll find that liking feels open, relaxed, and flexible while wanting feels tight, pressed, contracted,
and fixated.
Then, see if you can stay with liking without slipping into wanting:
Help little alarm bells to go off in your mind - Alert! Caution! - when you get that familiar
feeling of wanting/craving, especially when it's subtle and floating around in the back of your mind.
Relax any sense of "gotta have it." Feel into the ways your life is and will be basically all right
even if you don't attain a particular goal. Seek results from a place of fullness, not scarcity or lack.
Try to remain relatively peaceful - even in the midst of passionate activity - since intensity,
tension, fear, and anger all fuel strong wanting.
Release any fixation on a certain outcome. Recognize that all you can do is tend to the causes,
but you can't force the results.
Keep the sense of "me" to a minimum. Success or failure will come from dozens of factors, only
a few of which are under your control. Win or lose, don't take it personally.
Along the way, watch out for the widespread belief that if you're not fiercely driven toward
your goals, you're kind of a wimp. Remember that you can have strong effort toward your
aims without falling into attachment to the results. (Darrells note: Let go, and let God!)

Gifts of Love program will
be held on Saturday December 21
at 5 P.M.
Immediately following the
program we will be having a Worship Dinner
Experience - complete with a full turkey

group will be preparing the meal, some music,
and opportunities for sharing during this
service. Please join us for both activities on
December 21 to kick off the week of Christmas
with joy and thanksgiving!

2014Calendars
I still have a few
calendars available for next
year. They make great gifts.
The cost is $3.
I also have the greatest greeting cards -
12 different 5 x 7 scenes plus envelopes in each
set and there are five different sets. So if you
are a card sending person, this is a great deal.
Their cost is only $3 per set also. I ordered 25
boxes and at the present time have 19 left.
A sample is on the counter in the office.
See Donna Woodbridge to pick up either a

ThanksgivingLuncheon
The seniors meet this coming Tuesday,
November 19, 2013 at 12 noon in Fellowship
Hall for our Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon
and meeting. Pastor Darrell is baking the
Turkeys again this year and many of you have
signed up to bring other dishes to complete the
meal. If you cant remember what you put
down, call Sammie 714-993-2418. Also if you
are coming and need transportation let
Sammie know. We plan to have a wonderful
time of fellowship, singing, games and GOOD
food. The seniors of First Christian Church are
grateful for many things this year and want to
thank everyone in the church who has
supported this ministry. See you there.

SeniorBookClub
Senior Book Club meets this
Thursday, November 21, 1:00 p.m. at
Pat Hunds home. We are reading
The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom.
You can still get the book, read it and join us
for a lively discussion and great refreshments.
Everyone welcome.

MittenTree
Thank you so much for all
the hats, scarves, socks, mittens
and gloves that you have brought
for the Mitten Tree. You have one more
Sunday after today to bring in your donation.
Look for the green and red buckets in the
Narthex.
In December there will be a Christmas
tree in the Narthex with these items and each
Wednesday at the Hot Meal we will give out
approximately 40 tickets and they in turn come
over to the Sanctuary building and choose an
item from the tree. If you would like to
volunteer an hour or so anytime during the
month of December, please get in touch with
Sue Harless and/or Diane Daugherty who are
the coordinators of this project.

JYFMeeting
November 17, immediately following
the all-church dinner, children in grades
Second through Fifth will have a JYF meeting
for 45 minutes! During that time we will
decorate worship bags and talk about Gifts of
Love which will be Saturday Dec. 21 at 5 P.M.

IngatheringOfFoodToMark
ThanksgivingSunday
On November 24, we will
celebrate Thanksgiving Sunday which, as
always, falls on the Sunday before our nation's
annual observance of a national holiday of
Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of
November. Repeating a tradition of many
years, Sammie Adams will put together a
beautiful cornucopia as a reminder of God's
abundance, which blesses all of us, as well as
our nation and other nations around the world.
We will have the opportunity to express
our gratitude for God's abundance to us by
sharing in an "ingathering of food." Our gifts
of canned and packaged food items will be
placed on the floor in front of the communion
table as part of our offering. The food will be
given to Pathways of Hope to help their Food
Distribution Center. We encourage everyone to
help us fill the space in front of the communion
table with "the beauty of food" which others
will need, not only for their Thanksgiving
celebration, but for food in the weeks ahead.

WeGetLetters
Some of our recent outreach
giving generated the following letters to us:

Sheryl A. Bourgeois, Ph.D., Executive
Vice-President, University Advancement,
Chapman University wrote this in response to
our 10/24/13 gift of $125 to the Church
Relations Office: "Your investment in
Chapman University plays a vital role in the
achievements of our talented students and in
the strength and success of this institution. All
of us at Chapman deeply appreciated your
generosity."

In a letter dated 10/31/13, David
Coatsworth, Director of Development,
Disciples Seminary Foundation, wrote: "Thank
you for your gift of $187.50 to the Annual Fund
at Disciples Seminary Foundation. . . . The
school year is progressing rapidly. We have
news to report of leadership changes at two
partner schools. Dr. Steve Sterner is the Acting
President of the Pacific School of Religion,
Berkeley. He served as a local pastor in
Claremont and was member of DSF's Board
when he lived in Claremont. Jeffrey Kuan was
installed as the President of the Claremont
School of Theology on October 23. He was a
professor at the Pacific School of Religion
earlier in his career. Both of these men know
DSF well."
The full text of both of these letters may
be read from the bulletin board above the
drinking fountains. We are grateful for your
gifts which support the many Outreach

ChristmasCardsforJapan
The Outreach Ministry Team will have
Christmas cards on the table in the Narthex the
next two Sundays to send to the following
churches in Japan who are still recovering from
the earthquake. We are asking you to sign the
cards and then to pray for them during the
holidays. These churches come to us from our
Partner Missionary in Japan, Jeffrey
Mensendiek.
Sendai Kawadiara Church Pastor
Rev. Keiji Kojima. This church was established
by the DOC in 1899. Although they did not
have damage, they have been very involved in
the relief effort. They have been searching for a
pastor for the last year and now have a new
one. Their prayer concerns are that God guide
and protect their community. May the joy of
their faith be contagious as they share it with
family members and friends.
Iizaka Church - Pastor Rev. Toshihisa
Suzuki
This church was damaged but has been
able to continue worshipping thanks to pastors
in larger church who have helped to support
their worship. Their prayer concerns are that
because the people in their church are aging
they will be able to continue to attend worship.
Last Christmas two young men were
baptized and sang for the church in a special
concert. They have felt so blessed and ask for
prayers for more younger people to come to
church and that the church will find a future in
the younger people.

Generousl y
Growing Our Faith Through Generosity
Last Sunday, we celebrated the
gifts of our congregation as we added
more leaves to our generosity tree and enjoyed
lovely leaf cookies after the worship service. Thank
you to Amy Styffe for her baking talents.
Together we are the living expression of
Gods generosity and witnesses to the abundant life
we know in Jesus Christ. As encouraged by the
apostle Paul, our giving is to be a regular and
shared part of our life together, an act of joy and
worship.
If you have not yet returned your Saints
Alive! Living Generously pledge card, please
prayerfully consider your financial gifts to
Fullerton First Christian Church and its ministry.
Make your gifts a regular part of your worship by
completing your card. You can still drop your card
in the private collection box under our generosity
tree in the church Narthex and hang your leaf on
the tree. Or, return your card and leaf by mail and
we will put your leaf on the tree for you.
Giving is gratitude. Help the branches on
our generosity tree continue to sprout leaves that
tell of our gratitude for what has been, our
commitment to what is, and our passion for what
God is yet to reveal in our lives and ministry.
Through our gifts, we connect to those who receive
them, bringing healing and wholeness, and
building worldwide relationships of one church in
Christ just as in Pauls time. Thank you all for
supporting the ministry of your church

ThanksgivingOfferingToBeReceivedThisSundayAndNextSunday
Your gifts in support of the 2013 Thanksgiving Offering will be welcome on either
November 17 or November 24. Use the special offering envelope distributed with the
worship bulletins last Sunday to make your gift or, you may simply write "Thanksgiving Offering" on the
memo line of your check to share in this annual special offering that supports the students, faculty and
administration of Disciples' colleges, universities and seminaries across the nation. That support goes to both
Disciples Seminary Foundation, Claremont, and the DOC Student Program at Chapman University, Orange, in
the PSW Region.
Disciples' colleges, universities and seminaries have been "home" to generations of students. Most of
the pastors who have served Disciples' congregations over the years are products of seminaries founded and
operated by Disciples. For example, the late Ken Scovill our Pastor from the late 80's into the year 2000 was a
graduate of Lexington Theological Seminary, as was Ed Linberg, our part-time Associate Minister from 1999
to 2011. Bob Hasty, one of our members, and a graduate of the Claremont School of Theology, also benefitted
from scholarships received through DSF during his seminary training. A host of lay leaders in our
congregations and in our regions received their educations from Disciples' colleges and universities. In our
congregation, among others, this includes these Chapman University graduates: Marguerite Beal, the late
Dean Echols, Chris Fee, Mitch Hanlon, Cam and Nancy Malotte, their son, Brian, as well as Cambria
Findley-Grubb, the most recent graduate. Other Chapman grads, with ties to our congregation, include:
David Beal, Paul Beal, Beth Parker, Lyndsey Smith, plus Scott and Carrie Van Diest. This is not a complete
list of Chapman graduates who are now, or have been part of our congregation, but by listing these names we
become aware that they, plus many more, "found a home" for their educational experience at Chapman. Our
gifts to the 2013 Thanksgiving Offering will give present and future students an opportunity to COME HOME
to a Disciples' College and/or Seminary so they can play a part in leading the ongoing transformation of our
churches.
The goal for the 2013 Thanksgiving Offering is $2,000, a slight increase over the $1,931 we received for
the 2012 Thanksgiving Offering. Thank you, in advance, for your generous support of the 2013 Thanksgiving
Offering. The Outreach Ministry

FromtheAssociatePastor
Are you ready for Advent yet? We are almost there! One of my favorite things as a kid
was having an Advent Calendar with the chocolates. Every day getting to have something
yummy as I waited anxiously for Christmas Day. My family also did an Advent Devotional as a family, and I
remember lighting the candles each week at the wreath on our dining room table.
As Zachary is getting older, I am beginning to think about ways to celebrate Advent as a family with
him. I know that we have many families with children in our congregation and/or as family members of those
in our congregations, and I wanted to pass along a few ideas for your family.
1. This year Starbucks has a super cute Advent Calendar that is a magnetic board with 25 magnetic tins.
This is something that could easily be refilled year to year, and is especially perfect for those with toddlers.
Fill it with a number of cheerios or yogurt melts that match the number of the day, and part of the Christmas
Story in each tin to read together. If youd like more details on this, please email me at revdebtodd@gmail.com
2. There is a resource available that I have glanced through called Taking the Advent Story Home
which is a family resource and is an easy printable PDF. You can find and download it here:
http://www.vibrantfaith.org/taking-advent-home.html. Each day there is a Scriptural Devotion,
Conversation Starter, Rituals and Traditions, and a Service opportunity.
3. Read together the advent devotional put together by our church members.
4. Obtain a copy of the advent devotional put together by the regional youth.
5. Create a list of ways that you can participate in 25 random acts of kindness throughout the advent season.
This is a great way to have your kids participate in coming up with the 25 activities, and then randomly select
one each day to do together.
Whatever you do this Advent season, or if you have your own traditions, I would love to hear about
them! Let me know when we can get together for coffee and share some traditions and stories!
Grace and Peace, Debra
