Rolling Element Bearing Maintenance Exercise Guide

Introductory Discussion
The loads or forces that rolling element bearings are subject to are radial or thrust. A radial load is a load that is applied along the line of the radius of the shaft. An thrust load is one that is applied along the axis of the shaft and is often referred to as a axial load. A bearing may be subject to either thrust loads or radial loads or to both at the same time (combination load). One of the considerations involved in bearing selection is the kind of load the bearing is expected to handle.

Rolling element bearing types are also selected based on the stress of the load. Ball bearings are normally used for light to medium loads, and roller bearings typically are used for moderate to heavy loads. Ball bearings generally cost less and operate at higher speeds with less heat generation than roller bearings. Roller bearings have more rolling surface area in contact with the bearings inner and outer races, allowing them to support heavier loads than ball bearings of similar size. Use of the proper bearing type in a specific application will help to ensure the most efficient operation of the machinery involved, thus reducing maintenance, down time, and the costs associated with operating and maintaining the equipment.

Performance Steps
Step 1. Identify the three basic bearing loads. Identify radial load . A radial load represents a force at right angles to the shaft axis, such as from a drive belt or chain around the shaft. Identify thrust load . A thrust (or axial) load represents a force applied in parallel with the axis of a shaft, such as from a rotary turntable on a vertical shaft. Identify combination load . A combination load represents a combination of two or more forces exerted on a shaft from a right angle with the shaft, perpendicular to the shaft, and/or at an angle with the shaft axis, such as from shaft-mounted gears. Identify basic rolling element bearing types. Identify the deep groove ball bearing (supplied with the DAC Maintenance Trainer, #6313ZZ). The deep groove ball bearing is the most common ball bearing and is designed primarily for radial loads, although a substantial thrust load in either direction can also be applied. Identify the double row deep groove ball bearing (supplied with the DAC Maintenance Trainer, #5208). The double row deep groove ball bearing is similar to the deep groove ball bearing, but has two rows and can accept higher radial loads and substantial thrust loads in either direction. Identify the angular contact ball bearing (supplied with the DAC Maintenance Trainer, #7313BMG). The angular contact ball bearing works best with heavy thrust loads in one direction and moderate radial loads.

Step 2.

Identify the single row ball bearing with eccentric locking collar (supplied with the DAC Maintenance Trainer, #KHP290-27). This is the small unit-type pillow block bearing supplied with the extended bearing maintenance trainer (204E). The single row ball bearing with eccentric locking collar uses the collar to locate the bearing on the shaft. It is designed to handle radial loads. Note: The single row ball bearing with eccentric locking collar should not be used on machines whose direction of rotation is reversible.

Identify the spherical roller bearing with tapered bore (supplied with the DAC Maintenance Trainer, #22212-CCK-W 33). The spherical roller bearing has high radial load capacity, as well as the ability to accommodate thrust loads in both directions. This bearing is suitable for heavy-duty applications and tolerates misalignment. Identify the needle bearings (supplied with the DAC Maintenance Trainer, #B-2012 [outer] and #IR-1612 [inner]). The needle bearing has small diameter rollers and is used where space is limited. Needle bearings can be either radial or thrust.

Summary
You have now learned to identify the three basic bearing load types: radial, thrust (or axial), and combination loads, and the major bearing types. Understanding the types of loads and the kinds of bearings that can be used to accommodate these loads is very valuable in selecting a bearing for use in a particular application, or in evaluating optimization of a machines performance. Using the right bearing for a load (and properly mounting it) lengthens machine life, improves performance, and reduces the time and cost of maintenance.
