DEAR thambi Now let us get into the ocean that is thirumanthiram.

(tmm) First, about the person that is thirumoolar. There is no clear direct evidence or internal evidence(tmm). About thirumoolar. All that information we get are from periya puranam of sekkizhar of 8th century and from some songs in praise of chiva.(shiva) A chivayogi, who had been initiated into yogamarga by nandidevar(chief disciple of chiva), left the Himalayas, to podhigai mountain, deep south, where agathiar, a great chivayogi and chittar, resided and whom he desired to meet. After worshipping chiva at thillai( chithambram, he moved to thiruvavaduthurai(en route podigai hills) At that place, he saw a flock of cows in tears, unable to bear the death of their master and cow-herd whose name was moolan. Moved by their love, and also by their agony, the compassionate chivayogi used his yogic and supernatural powers, entered the cow-herd moolans body to pacify the cows. He hid his body in a cave. After the cows stopped their crying, he went in search of his body. It had disappeared. He knew it was divine will that he should stay there and help people . he stayed there for a long time (some thousands of years) and recorded his wisdom in Tamizh, for the benefit of the world. ennai nanraai inraivan cheiythann Tannai nanraai tamizh cheyumaarey(TMM) God mad me a perfect person , and the reason was, His attributes could be rendered by me in the most beautiful tamizh, the southern language. Later tamizh scholars gave the name thirumanthiram, to thiru moolars anthology of 3000 songs.

Millions of people have read and studied thirumanthiram, over many centuries. and thingalani (TA)is one among the millions, who was fascinated by thirumanthiram. Thirukkural and thiru arutpa, from his younger days. TA shall not go by any order , when he sends you thirumanthiram messages. TMM verses randomly selected by him , and his views about them shall be sent to you. Yaan petra inbam peruga iv vaiyagam.(TMM) Love. Thingalani Ps .Now let us both enjoy this great thirumanthiram, may all peace descend upon you.

Udambu in tamil means body. philosophical schools of india vary in their perception of the human body and mind. Vedantists regard this body as just a shirt and dont give much importance to it. They give much importance to the self (atma or anma). They denied the respect that the body deserved. A section of the siddhas , (there are many lineages , we shall deal in detail later. TA) did not accept the above view, and found out the divinity of the body. And tamil siddhas gave the name MEY, meaning TRUE,,,, to the body. The body is the truth as it contains the truth. Tirumoolar was a siddha and yogi who fell into this line of siddhas Now let us proceed I THOUGHT OF THIS BODY AS LOW AND OF A DISGRACEFUL NATURE (IN THE PAST) THEN I FOUND OUT THE NATURAL, PRECIOUS ESSENCE , IN THIS BODY. HAVING UNDERSTOOD THAT THIS HIGHEST THING HAS MADE DWELLING OF THIS BODY. I, BEING STILL, AM PROTECTING THIS BODY.. ( TAS TRANSLATION) Now the siddhayogi says he had neglected the body in the past. Probably he was influenced by other philosophers of his time. Then he finds out the truth. And how? KANDEN. ( I SAW). The yogi with his deep penetrating insight SAW the TRUTH in the body. Then the realization dawns on him that the body is the home of the PURE ESSENCE that permeates all the worlds. Then , how does he protect the body? BY BEING STILL. BY STILLNESS ( HE USES THE WORD IRUNDHU(MEANING BEING STILL) This irundhu is used throughout siddha and yogic literature . some usages explained now. CHUMMA IRU= just be.. be still. Remain actively passive passively active and so on.

This term CHUMMA IRU, has a parallel in ZEN BUDDHISM known as SHIKAN TAZA meaning JUST BE ENNAIYUM IRUPPATHU AAKINNAN is from manicka vaachagars thiruvachagam, where the great tamil saint reveals the truth that his LORD made him STILL, STABLE ( IRUPPU)

Now, we understand the preciousness of the body and the need and means to protect it.

MAY ALL THE GOOD HAPPEN TO YOU

DEAR THAMBI

NOW LET US KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT SAIVA SIDDHANTHA.(SS) SS IS A UNIQUE PHILOSOPHY STILL ALIVE IN THE SOUTH, PARTICULARLY IN TAMILNADUAND ILANGAI. THIS KNOWLEDGE IS ESSENTIAL BECAUSE THIRUMOOLAR IS A SIDDHA AND ALSO A SAIVA SIDDHANTIST. IN SS THE HIGHER SELF IS CALLED PATHI.(GOD) THE INDIVIDUAL SELF IS CALLED PASHU , THE ATTACHMENTS OF THE PASHU ARE CALLED PAASAM.( BINDING) PAASAM HAS THREE COMPONENTS. AANAVAM(PRIDE AND EGO), KANMAM(ACTIONS AND ITS EFFECTS), MAAYAI ( ILLUSION). THEY ARE CALLED MUMMALAMS ( 3 CONDITIONINGS) ALL THESE THREE (PATHI, PASHU AND PAASAM) ARE ANAATHI ( NO BEGINNING). NOW THE WHOLE LIFE DRAMA OF PASHUS ARE SCRIPTED AND DIRECTED BY PATHI. PASHU HAS TO BE AWARE OF THE MUMMALAMS , AND GET OUT OF THEM BY UNDERSTANDING, AND ALSO THROUGH THE ARUL ( GRACE OF THE PATHI). NOW HERE AGAIN THE GOD BECOMES WHOLE ONLY WITH HIS SHAKTHI. SO GOD IS ALWAYS IMMOVABLE IN HIS STATE ,AND HIS THIRUVARUL OR PARASHAKTI (WHO AGAIN IS HIS OWN PART) OR HIGHEST ENERGY DOES ALL THE ACTIVE WORK TO ENLIGHTEN THE PASHU. SO THE SHIVA PART IS FATHER AND THE SHAKTI PART IS THE MOTHER. AND AGAIN SHAKTI IS THE MOTHER, SHIVA IS THE FATHER. SHAKTI IS THE EARTH AND SHIVA IS THE SKY. THE GREAT LORD IS PARAMESWARA AND HE HAS FIVE ATTRIBUTES AND 5 FUNCTIONS. BRAHMA, VISHNU, RUDRA, SADASHIVA AND MAHESWARA. AND THEIR FUNCTIONS ARE CALLED PANCHA KRITYAS ( 5 ACTIONS) VIZ AAKAL, KAATTAL, AZHITTHAL,ARULAL, AND MARAITTHAL. SRISHTI, STHITI, SAMHARA, THIRODHANA AND ANUGRAHA, . CREATION, PROTECTION, DESTRUCTION, CONCEALMENT AND GRACE.

IN FACT THE SAME PATHI TAKES THESE FIVE FORMS TO EXECUTE THESE 5 ACTS. HE IS, IN TRUTH, THE ONLY ONE. HE IS THE EMPTINESS AND ALSO THE FORM. AS EMPTINESS HE IS CALLED SABANAYAKAM AND AS FORM CALLED NATARAJA. NOW THE PASHU(INDIVIDUAL SELF OR BEING) HAS FOUR WAYS TO REALISE. REACH, AND MERGE WITH ,THE PATHI. THEY ARE, CHARIYAI(BODILY WORSHIP AND SERVICE) KIRIYAI( RITUALS) YOGAM(PSYCHO-PHYSICAL PRACTISES) AND GNANAM.( WISDOM)

. . MORE AND MORE TO COME.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// BROTHER, ENOUGH FOR TODAY? WE SHALL CONTINUE THE SAME IN OUR NEXT MAIL ANBUDAN THINGALANI NB. MAY ALL THE GOOD HAPPEN TO YOU

Dear thambi Let us continue We are now in our way of knowing the saiva siddantha system of philosophy. The four ways of realization of the pashu. ( about the pathi.) The individual self has a relationship with the higher self, according to the way it has chosen Whe one is in the chariyai, he is said to be in DASA MARGAM, or the way of the slave, pleasing his MASTER. When one is in kriyai, he is said to be in SATPUTRA MARGAM, or the way of the child loving his PARENT. When one is in yogam, he is said to be in SAKHA MARGAM, or the way of the friend understanding his FRIEND. When one is in gnanam, he is said to be in SANMARGAM, or the way of understanding ones own SELF. Now, each margam has got an accomplishment level. A man in DASA MARGAM gets the status of SAALOKAM.( He enters the world of SIVA) A man in SATPUTRA MARGAM gets the status of SAAMEEPAM (He is given a place VERY NEAR SIVA) A man in SAKHA MARGAM gets the status of SAAROOPAM( He gets the physical FORM of SIVA) A man in SANMARGAM gets the status of SAYUJYAM(He becomes SIVA HIMSELF) So it is the seekers efforts and his understanding of the LORD, that decide the status he may be conferred upon. Again , the saivite literature is divided into two, thothiram and chaathiram. Thothiram means praising the lord Chaathiram means discussion of various methods of self-realization (god-realization). Thirumanthiram is both a thothiram and a chaathiram.

Now one manthiram Thoongik kandaar siva logamum tammule Thoongik kandaar siva yogamum tammule Thoongik kandaar siva bogamum tammule Thoongik kandaar nilai solvatthev vaarey. 17

Interpretation in next mail. Until then , think about all that have been spoken till now May all the good happen to you Anban Thingalani

Dear brother Let us start from where we stopped.

Thoongik kandaar siva logamum tammule Thoongik kandaar siva yogamum tammule Thoongik kandaar siva bogamum tammule Thoongik kandaar nilai solvatthev vaarey. 17 Thookkam is a tamil word with many meanings. In present day usage it means sleep. The other meanings are 1= delaying or deferring actions, 2= lifting, 3= a deep meditative state It is in the 3rd sense that this word is used in thirumanthiram. Now let us go through the manthiram.

In deep meditation, the siddhas(yogis) saw the world of siva within themselves, In deep meditation, the siddhas(yogis)saw the union of siva within themselves, In deep meditation, the siddhas(yogis)saw the experiences of siva within themselves, How can the state of these deep meditative siddhas(yogis)be explained?( (TA trans)

This is a very important manthiram. Loka means word. Siva loka means seeing the world within oneself with the eyes of siva. Yoga is a word whose meaning differs with context. Yoga in popular language means luck. In astrology, it means combination or aspects of planets in the horoscope. Yoga, according to patanjali muni, who did much to the science of yoga, is cessation of the wandering of the mind. Yogas chittah vriddhi nirodhah . So yoga in this manthiram means to be in communion with the inner and higher self viz siva. Bhoga means experience. It is called thuyppu or thuyththunarthal in tamil. Now we shall go into details about bhoga, with the saiva siddhantha lens. The pashu (individual self) has 4 posessions viz , dhanu, karana, bhuvana and bhogam. Dhanu is the physical body Karana, is the mind and the mental activities. Bhuvana is the world of experiences of the pashu. Bhogam is the experience of the pashu, Now the philosophy of saiva siddhanta is to transform all these 4 states of the pashu into a higher order. So with various paths prescribed to the pashu, these 4 states are transformed as follows, All JEEVA levels are TRANSFORMED into SIVA levels. Jeeva dhanu becomes SIVA DHANU

Jeeva karana becomes SIVA KARANA Jeeva bhuvana becomes SIVA BHUVANA Jeeva bhogam becomes SIVA BHOGAM. It is this BHOGAM or HIGHER EXPERIENCE , which is mentioned by the great THIRUMOOLANATHA, in this manthiram. .we are still in the shallow waters,,,, And deep inside THIRUMANTHIRAM, we have a lot to experience, Like Sacred biology Sacred geometry Sacred chemistry Sacred physics Sacred sexology Sacred alchemy Sacred astronomy Sacred astrology Sacred meditative practices Sacred accomplishments (or) SIDDHIS And much more
