Distributive Property

In the distributive property, numbers or variable are either broken down to solve equations more easily. You can use the distributive property with addition and multiplication. 6(48) (6 40) + (68)

Associative Property of Add/Multi.

When solving and equation using the associative property, the equations may be swapped. Either way, youll still get the same answer! Just solve the problem and dont worry about how the problem is set up. (7 + 3) + 1 = 7 + (3 + 1) Addition (7 3) 1 = 7 (3 1) Multiplication

Commutative Property of Add/Multi.

Like the associative property, the numbers in a commutative property equation are simply just swapped! You can solve the problem and get the same answer despite the order. Think of it as going to the park. If you start at your house and arrive at the park, then you have to do the opposite to go back home. Used for addition and multiplication 4 +3 = 3 +4

Simplifying Expressions

Distributive Property Example 4(7x - 3) + 2x 28x - 12 + 2x 26x - 12 First, multiply 4 by 7x and 3. 4(7x -3)

Subtract the lower coefficient (2x) from 28x. Final, simplified equation

Solving Multi-step Equations

7x - 10 - 9x = -13 7x - 10 - 9x = -13 2x - 10 = -13 2x = -3 x = -1.5 Combine like terms. Add 10 to -13. Divide -3 by 2x to find the value of x.

Multi-step Equations
5x + x - 1 = 11 6 3 2 6 First, find a common denomination (6) and multiply whatever numbers are required to have a product of 6 (2 or 3). Then to get rid of the denominator, (6) 5x+2x - 3 = 11 (6) multiply the denominators by 6 6 6 6 6 Proceed to solving the multi- step equation 5x + 2x - 3 =11 7x - 3 =11 7x =14 7 7 x=2

Inequalities
x 5 (5) 2 " x 5 5 10 " x 2" x ! 10

Multiply five on each side of the equation Flip the symbol so x is on the left sign Graph

Open and Closed Circles

Open circle- The number isnt part of the answer. It shows that all the numbers higher or equal to 8 could be the value of 8. Ex. x ! 8 Closed circle- The number is part of the answer. It means that the value of x can only be higher than 8. Ex. x > 8

Inequality Word Problem

Mark worked on math homework less than 1/3 the amount of time that his brother. If Mark spend 25 minutes on his math homework, how much did his brother spend on math homework?

25 e> 1/3

25 x 3 1 1

t > 75
