ABB

Ultra Fast Earthing Switch type UFES Introduction

ABB development of a new active internal arc protection system for air insulated medium voltage switchgear

The goal: Achievement of the highest possible protection level for medium voltage switchgear in regard to destruction by internal arc faults

The protection device is available under the type name UFES (Ultra Fast Earthing Switch)

ABB

Ultra Fast Earthing Switch type UFES Reasons for arc flash accidents

1. Human errors 2. Pollution 3. Animals

4. Overvoltage 5. Bad connections 6. Mechanical faults

7. Defective devices (e.g. voltage transformer)

Effects of an internal arc fault Internal arc test without active protection device
An internal arc fault will lead to extreme impacts for the inside of the switchgear and for the integrated devices. Illustration: Internal arc test - 50kA / 1s Fault initiation in CB compartment

3 primary switching elements for initiation of a 3-phase shortcircuit earthing in parallel to the internal arc

ABB

Ultra Fast Earthing Switch type UFES Differentiation

Conventional protection device (e.g. REF6) Fault detection by standard relay Clearing of the arc fault current by the upstream circuit-breaker

Fast-acting protection relay with supplementary equipment (e.g. REA) Fast fault detection by special protection relay Clearing of the arc fault current by the upstream circuit-breaker

Ultra Fast Earthing Switch type UFES Ultra-fast fault detection by UFES electronic type QRU1 Ultra-fast extinction of the internal arc by switching of the UFES primary switching element type U1 Final clearing of the fault current by the upstream circuit-breaker

ABB
