Introduction
1.1 Dasa: Time & State

The word Dasa has several meanings and is unique to the astrology of the Hindus. It is defined as the state, condition and circumstances of existence of a body, both animate and inanimate, during predefined periods of its life as fated by the position of the planets, stars and other heavenly bodies in the zodiac at the time of its conception or birth.

It is a means to perfect prognostication and describes the fate of all created beings based on the configuration of the planets in the sky at the time of their conception or creation.

1.2 Nomenclature

The Major periods of any Dasa system are called Mahadasa or simply Dasa.

sub-periods (2nd level of Cyclic periods within a major period) are called Antara-dasa or Bhukti.

sub-sub-periods (3rd level of Cyclic periods within 2nd level period) are called Pratyantara-dasa.

sub-sub-sub-periods (4th level of Cyclic periods within 3rd level period) are called Sookshma-dasa.

sub-sub-sub-sub-periods (5th level of Cyclic periods within 4th level period) are called Prana-dasa.

` prm tTvay daeyay gu_yae nm>,

sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-periods (6th level of Cyclic periods within 5th level period) are called Deha-dasa.

1.3 Dasa Applicability

Vimsottari dasa is like the icing over the cake of Vedic Astrology. It is the single greatest gift of the Maharishis for the welfare of people in the Dark Age of Kali especially since the maximum longevity of man during this Dark Age is 120 years.

Vimsottari means 120 which is the maximum duration of this scheme. Irrespective of special conditions, Vimsottari Dasa will always apply in a horoscope.

1.4 Dasa Variations

There are 5 variations of Vimsottari Dasa based on the Nakshatra which initiates the Dasa. They are:
Janma Nakshatra (Janma Dasa) Lagna Nakshatra (Lagna Dasa) 5 from natal Moon (Utpanna Dasa) 4 from natal Moon (Kshema Dasa) 8 from natal Moon (Adhana Dasa)
th th th

However, Janma Dasa & Lagna Dasa are Phalita Dasa (Fruits of this Life), whereas Utpanna, Kshema & Adhana Dasa are Ayur Dasa (Longevity Analysis).

` prm tTvay daeyay gu_yae nm>,

One of the keys to successful prediction is correctly identifying the right variation of Vimsottari Dasa and applying it with simple rules of Astrology without beating around the bush! Often we fail to pick the correct dasa and struggle with interpretation. It is here that gifted astrologers are bailed out due to the strength of their intuition.

Take Lagna & Moon as reference points. Among these two entities find out who has more planets in Kendras (quadrants) to them. In taking the counts, please exclude Lagna & Moon.

In cases of tie, like when both have equal counts, Moon casts its vote in its favor and wins. In such cases we take the Vimsottari Dasa from Moon, else from Lagna.

2 Judgment of Results
2.1 Lordship of Signs & Houses

The lord of the Lagna is the single most important planet in a horoscope, as it represents the native. The sign occupied by lord of Lagna is called Paka Lagna and it represents the intellect (Dhi Shakti) of the native. Jupiter is the karaka of Intellect and hence Paka Lagna.

If the lord is exalted then matters of that house will flourish and if the lord is debilitated then matters of that house is destroyed.

A planet in debility can ruin all others conjunct with it even if they are exalted. If it is conjunct Rahu, then great evil is predicted during its dasa/anta. However, if it attains neechabhanga (cancellation of

debility), then it shall give Rajayoga during its periods and all planets conjoined shall work in harmony with it.

Neechabhanga occurs due to the placement of either of the following in Kendra (only) to Lagna or Moon.
I. Lord of the Sign of debility. II. Lord of the signs opposite the sign of debility i.e. the lord of

the sign of exaltation. III. Planet that is exalted in the sign of debility of another. IV. The debilitated planet is placed in exalted Navamsa.

If the Lord of a house is placed is the 6th, 8th, 12th or obstruction (Baadhaka) sign, then the house suffers. Similarly, if the lord of these houses placed in any bhava shall damage it due to such sources of evil. Source of suffering/evil is due:

` prm tTvay daeyay gu_yae nm>,

I. enemies (agantuka-drista) 6th house effect. II. own karma (nija-roga) 8th house effect. III. past debt (rina) 12th house effect. IV. evil forces (agantuka-adrista) Baadhaka effect.

Figure 1: Roga (Disease) Definition

If the Lord of any house is placed in Kendra (quadrant) in strength and is well aspected, the house owned shall flourish during its period due to the natives karma. If in such a case, the placement is in the trikona (5th & 9th) the houses flourish due to good fortune and blessings.

If the Lord of any house is placed in the 8th from it, it suffers complete destruction even if the said lord is exalted. This destruction is sure to come if the lord is a natural benefic like Jupiter or Moon.

If a planet is ill placed, in a bad state, eclipsed or in an inimical or sign of depression, if it is in its exaltation, own or friendly navamsa it manages to salvage the damage and recover after an initial setback.

7 PDF created with FinePrint pdfFactory trial version http://www.pdffactory.com

` prm tTvay daeyay gu_yae nm>,

Planets and Houses aspected by Benefics and its lord shall prove auspicious during its period. Planets and Houses aspected by Malefics and its lord shall suffer during its period. Good or bad would depend on the nature of the houses and their relationship with Lagna Lord.

Kartari yoga, if caused by natural benefits (called subha-kartari) placed in the 2nd &12th from any planet indicate destruction of enemies during the dasa of the planet. In the case of papa-kartari yoga (malefics instead of benefic planets in 2nd & 12th houses from any planet), the planet suffering from such blemish indicates trouble from enemies. Final results should be declared only after an examination of strength of Lagna Lord.

A planet placed in its Moolatrikona (office) or own sign (home) shall prove to be very auspicious in successfully promoting the matters signified by the houses it owns. In a friendly sign it shall be supportive but in an inimical or unfriendly sign, the affairs indicated by the houses owned by it shall be annihilated or diminish respectively.

Royal favor (appointments, power etc) is obtained during the period of Jupiter or the 5th Lord. Planets associating with them or having

unobstructed beneficial Argala or associated with the Ghatika Lagna give power and authority. 2.2 Strength

It is the Strength of the planet that decides the fructification of yoga (good or bad) and the extent of such fruits.

8 PDF created with FinePrint pdfFactory trial version http://www.pdffactory.com

` prm tTvay daeyay gu_yae nm>,

If the planet is placed in a Kendra, if it is weak it shall bring disease/decay to the houses it owns, especially during the periods of such malefics/planets that are the cause of its weakness.

The period of the badhakesh1 or of a planet associated with it brings disease and sorrow. Planets in Kendra to Baadhaka sign give sorrow or foreign travel.

2.3 Marana Sthana

The specific most malefic positions of planets capable of causing death like suffering are as follows: - Sun in 12th house, Moon in 8th house, Mars in 7th house, Mercury in 7th house, Jupiter in 3rd house, Venus in 6th house, Saturn in 1st house and Rahu in 9th house from the Lagna (or dasa Rasi). Such positions of the planets are called Marana Sthana (death inflicting) and the planets become Marana Karaka (death inflictors). Such planets also destroy their significations and houses they own.

Badhakesh is the lord of obstruction; 11th lord for movable ascendants, 9th lord for fixed ascendants and 7th lord for dual ascendants is the badhakesh.

3 Identifying Trends
3.1 Three Parts of a Period

Planets in sirsodaya2 (head rising) signs give results (good or bad) at the beginning (first 1/3rd portion) of their dasa/antar. Planets in pristodaya3 signs (back rising) give results at the end (last 1/3rd portion) of their period and planets in ubhayodaya4 (both rising only Pisces) give results in the middle (middle 1/3rd portion) of their periods.

For malefic planets the results of its exaltation or such strength in divisions is felt in the first three sub periods i.e. about 1/3 rd the period of dasa/antardasa. The results of its house placement and ownership are felt in the next three sub periods i.e. the middle 1/3rd past of the dasa/antardasa. The results of its aspects as well as aspect, on it will be felt in the concluding 1/3rd portion or last three sub-periods.

For Benefic planets, the result of its ownership and house placement are felt in the first three sub-periods (i.e. first 1/3rd part of the period); its exaltation and strength show their results in the middle part (i.e. next 1/3rd part) whereas the aspects on it as well as its aspects bear fruit in the last (i.e. concluding 1/3 rd) part of the dasa.

` prm tTvay daeyay gu_yae nm>, 3.2 Satyacharyas Principle5

The Sun, Moon & Lagna being the Naisargika karaka (natural significators) of the Soul, Mind and Body can be used as reference points to analyze the Mahadasa, Antaradasa & Pratyantaradasa.

3.3 Dasa Antaradasa

A planet produces its effect on the house it occupies depending on its nature. Benefic planets produce beneficial results for the house they occupy and malefic planets produce malefic results.

When malefics and benefics conjoin, the malefic planet gives the result of the benefic and vice versa.

Planets placed in mutual shastastaka (6th & 8th house from each other) forebode evil and suffering during their mutual dasa-antardasa period.

The results experienced by the Soul (Sun) lasts longer and changes slowly, the results experienced by Mind (Moon) last shorter and changes fast and the results experienced by the body change even faster.

Explanation: The native has 1 Daughter and 1 Son. The Daughter was born on Dec 21st 1992 and the Son on June 1st 1995. Lagna has 4 planets in Kendra to it, where as Moon has only one. In finding the stronger of the two we exclude both Lagna and Moon from the count. Hence, Lagna with a count of 4 beats Moon with a count of 1. Therefore, we have to initiate Vimsottari Dasa from Lagna and not Moon!
Figure 4: Lagna Vimsottari Dasa

For matters pertaining to Progeny, their happiness and prosperity, Parasara has adviced the usage of Saptamsa or D-7. In the D-7 given above, Sagittarius and Odd-Sign rises, hence reckoning of houses will be Zodiacal. The chart belongs to a male and hence 5th house is the Karya rasi or activity house. 5H is Aries with Venus in it promises happiness through children. Hence the Dasa of Venus fulfilled that promise.

` prm tTvay daeyay gu_yae nm>, The first kid is signified by 5th house and the second by 7th house. Dasa lord Venus should have argala on Saptamsa Lagna lord Jupiter and also the 5th and 7th houses. Antara Dasa lord should have same relation to the lord of pregnancy or be in 5th, 9th or 12th from it. Here AD lord Venus is in the house of first pregnancy and the other AD lord Sun is in 12th from the house of 2nd pregnancy.

Figure 6: Job Loss - D10

15 PDF created with FinePrint pdfFactory trial version http://www.pdffactory.com

` prm tTvay daeyay gu_yae nm>,

Explanation: Job loss occurred on Aug 30 2001. Observe the Rasi chart. 6 planets are in Kendra (quadrants) to Lagna and only Jupiter is in Kendra to Moon! Hence Lagna Vimsottari Dasa is more appropriate than Janma Vimsottari Dasa.
Figure 7: Lagna Vimsottari Dasa

Dasamsa or D10 is the chart to consider when we are dealing with our Actions in society, Profession and Achievements. Mahadasa and Antaradasa lord Mars is on the Dasamsa Lagna and should have given a boost to career or at least a fresh start. However, quite the reverse happened and the native was laid off! MD & AD lord Mars is in 8th house (Dusthana) from A10 or Rajya Pada, which signifies Power and Position.

16 PDF created with FinePrint pdfFactory trial version http://www.pdffactory.com

` prm tTvay daeyay gu_yae nm>, Observe how Mahadasa lord Mars (8th lord) has exchanged houses with Lagna lord of Dasamsa or D-10. Dasamsa is the division representing our actions in society. The exchange of 1st & 8th lords indicates taking risks and being careless. The native was offered an alternative assignment which he refused and as a result he got laid off. Most importantly, for those of you interested in analyzing Curses, Mars is conjunct with Rahu in 10th house in Rasi or D-1, aspected by Saturn from the Lagna. This represents a curse, specifically Pitri Shapa6! Note: Although the advent of Mars Dasa brought with it troubles on the professional front, his career and progress in astrology took an interesting turn, he progressed tremendously, picking up new concepts, contributing to magazines and also getting Mantra initiation from his Guru! The 8th house also signifies Occult & Astrological activities. Using the Three Parts of a Period: In Dasamsa, Mars is in Virgo a Sirshodaya sign; the 3 parts of a period will be given by Virgo, Mercury & then Mars (as Mercury is a benefic). However, note Mercury & Mars have exchanged houses. Hence Mars will give its result before Mercury. The native lost his job in the first 1/3rd of the Dasa when Virgo gives its results. How can Virgo give professional troubles when it is actually the Lagna? For Professional pursuits, we have to give importance to A10 or Rajya Pada. Here Virgo is in 8H from A10. This does not augur well for
6

Pitri Shapa: Curse of Father. Although the ninth house rules the Father, the relationship of Father & son is focused on the artha-trikona6 of both especially the tenth house through which the Karma is transferred. Thus, affliction of a house, its Lord and significator by the Sun and other malefic planets (either jointly or separately) results in Pitrishapa.

17 PDF created with FinePrint pdfFactory trial version http://www.pdffactory.com

` prm tTvay daeyay gu_yae nm>, professional developments. OTOH, Virgo is 11H from AL and there will be gain of image in society. The native did get a boost in his astrological pursuits (Virgo-Lagna) and his image benefited by it. 4.3 Case Study #3: Timing a New Job

` prm tTvay daeyay gu_yae nm>,

Figure 9: Timing a New Job - D10

Explanation: The 5th house is very important for Recognition and obtaining Royal favors. Further, the 5th house is the 8th from the 10th house representing birth (Beginning) and Longevity (Time of Implementation) of an action (10th house). Thus the 5th house rules Authority & Power that one enjoys due to skills and knowledge as well as ones PurvaPunya. Hence, the timing of a new job is done from the 5th house in Dasamsa. This is typically seen in Pratyantaradasa or Sookshmadasa. Please Note: In Rasi, Moon and Lagna are with equal number of planets, since they are in Kendras to each other. Hence, Moon casts its vote in its favor, thereby getting the right to initiate the Vimsottari Dasa.

Figure 16: Moon Vimsottari Dasa

The 5th lord in Dasamsa is Moon. However, the PD lord is Mercury!! Then obviously something is amiss here. What could it be? Well, for that we must go through the karakas (Significators) of the 12 Bhavas.

Now, the PD of joining of a new job will not always be of the 5th lord. In fact, any planet in 5H can also give it, or we take the karaka houses of the 5L (from the above given table) and then look at that house or its lord, these planets can also come forward, in lieu of the 5L, to give a new job or Recognition! In the above case study, the 5L is Moon, which signifies the 4H. Now, 4H is empty, but the 4L Mercury comes forward and does the job. Hence the native joined the new job during the PD of Mercury.

All kinds of Learning, Education & Knowledge are to be deciphered from Siddhamsa or Chaturvimsamsa or D24. For Bachelors degree the 9th house/lord are the key and for Masters Degree the 2nd house/lord. Event #1: The native completed Higher Education (Bachelors & Masters) in Saturn Dasa. Saturn the Dasa lord is in Cancer with debilitated Mars. Mars is the lord of 9th as well as the 2nd; hence in his association Saturn was able to give both the education. Debilitated Mars made him change his line of Study and also the place of study. Venus the PD lord is in trines from both 9th house/lord and Rahu the PD lord is in Kendra to both 2nd house/lord. Event #3: The native completed Bachelors degree in Moon PD and Masters in Rahu PD. Observe how Moon & Saturn have exchanged houses. Hence in their MD/PD some change will take place. Since the houses involve the 12th (loss) it terminated his Bachelors education. Also, Saturn & Moon are in mutual Shasta-Ashtaka (6th/8th) position indicating a break. AD Moon is also in 3H from AL in D-24. Benefics in 3H is not good for success; hence he failed in a subject in the final year of his studies and had to repeat it. But, he did pass during Moon PD as Moon is also involved in a parivarthana yoga (exchange) with Saturn a malefic giving him success after initial setbacks. For Masters Degree, Rahu PD not only gave him an opportunity but also terminated the studies. From 2nd house/lord (Masters), Rahu is in quadrants. While the results of Rahu being in 10th house (Note Malefics in 10H is good) from 2nd house gave him sustenance of Masters Education, it being in 7th house (Maraka) from 2nd lord also terminated it! 28 PDF created with FinePrint pdfFactory trial version http://www.pdffactory.com

Event #4: He took on a teaching job in the same school in April 90. This happened in Sat-Moon. Moon is in 12th showing end of education. Interestingly it is involved in parivarthana yoga and that kind of reversed the trend. Instead of learning, he began to teach. Here Moon is also aspected by 9L (Teaching) Mars. Event #5: He was involved in an incident which tarnished his reputation and as a result was asked to quit teaching around Feb 91. This happened in Sat-Mars-Rahu. All three malefics involved and interestingly if you observe, all four malefics are oppoaing each other, in the 2nd house & 8th house from AL. Note: This dire malefic combination involving malefics in 2nd & 8th houses from Lagna or Arudha Lagna (AL) goes by the name of Kemadruma Yoga. From Lagna, it causes poverty and suffering and from AL causes fall in reputation and tarnishing of image or loss in business. Since this happened in D24 the chart of Learning & Education, natives image (AL) suffered a setback in areas connected with academics & teaching.
