Exercise Nr. 4: Spectral efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) cells

This exercise will enable you to determine the theoretical maximum spectral efficiency of a
photovoltaic cell, and to determine the effect of concentration on cell efficiency.
Due date: Thursday May 26, 17:00 in ML K24

1. Calculate the band-gap wavelength, G, for Ge, c-Si and GaP.

2. For the same three materials, calculate the portion of energy in the wavelength interval [0 G]
assuming incident solar radiation having the spectral distribution of a blackbody (Plancks
distribution) at 5780 K. Use Table 2 enclosed to evaluate the fractional function.
3. Calculate the theoretical maximum spectral efficiency for the c-Si cell exposed to solar
radiation having the spectral distribution of a blackbody at 5780 K. Hint: divide the wavelength
interval [0 G] into 6 equal bands, and determine the amount of useful energy in each interval.
Use Table 2 enclosed to evaluate the fractional function.
4. A promising route to reduce the overall cost of electricity generated by solar PV is to
concentrate the sunlight, thereby reducing the size of the cell required to generate a given
amount of power. Determine the effect of the concentration ratio, C, on the efficiency of a solar
cell (i.e. how cell efficiency scales with C). Assume the power output the solar cell is given by:
Pcell (W/m 2 ) = FF J SC VOC

where JSC is the short circuit current density (Ampere/m2) of the cell, VOC is the open circuit
voltage (Volts), and FF is the fill-factor, which accounts for Ohmic losses in the cell. The short
circuit current density and open circuit voltage are found from:
J SC = e EQE C I solar

VOC =

k BT J sc
ln
+ 1
e
J0

where e is the electronic charge, EQE is the external quantum efficiency of the cell, Isolar is
direct normal solar irradiance in W/m2, T is the temperature of the cell, kB is the Boltzmann
constant, and J0 is the dark current density. Hint: Assume FF, EQE, T, and J0 are constant.
