In Japan
Otsukimi (Moon viewing)
Moon viewing has long been a popular pastime in Japan, especially on Jugoya,, the night of the full moon, which was the 15th night (jugoya) of the month in the old lunar calendar. The Japanese adopted the Chinese custom of setting out melons, green soybeans, and fruits in the garden as offerings to the moon on this day. Jugoya is considered to be the harvest moon and is an occasion for thanksgiving and partying. Did I say Party ? Well well well we would throw moonviewing parties, eat refreshments like dango dumplings and taro, drink..yes, drink sake, and celebrate the coming of autumn. Decorations included cut plants representing autumn, such as susuki (Japanese pampas grass). Moon viewing is a common theme in Japanese poetry, particularly in waka and haiku. It ranks with snow viewing and ohanami (cherry-blossom viewing) as one of the three most favored settings for declarations of love and poetic outpourings of the soul.

Queen of the night (Selenicereus)

Its opens at night in summer and one night only. Has strong fragrance, you only need one flower to fill whole house. Keep under the shade and very easy to look after. Thanks Dr. L.L

March 1975, I arrived in Sydney not knowing what was ahead but young enough not to worry about it. But it was very hard to find a job if you dont speak much English and I ended up in Darwin. I got a job at a sheet metal factory making air-conditioning ducts. Mon ~ Sat 45hrs. a week and paid $100. After paid rent and food etc. I still had $40 to put away for rainy day. (Fish & chips are 40c) There I was in share house (after cyclone Tracy in 1974 Christmas Eve, there werent many houses standing in good condition and many people had no choice but to share with other people. I had to share with 14 people in a house and that was fun (I made 14 friends instantly). We made a pair to cook once a week for everyone and that was my first time to cook for others. I was the only Asian in the house but got on well with everyone. My experience with people in Darwin changed my original plan to go to USA and instead stayed in Australia for Continue to Page 3 good.

To be able to speak reasonable English was still my priority and wasnt easy but being a friendly, handsome Japanese meant it didnt take long to find a volunteer teacher, a young Australian lady and she is still teaching me.
