Waiting Room By Thomas Parish

"There is no greater Business, than the Business of God himself" INT. WAITING ROOM, - DAY An old room cluttered with aged books, brass trinkets and a large fireplace. Two characters sit comfortably in the red leather backed chairs positioned perfectly beside the fire. On one side of the room sits GOD swirling a glass of amber in his left hand, and puffing on a large cigar with his right. Smiling softly at TOM, the man opposite him, who was dressed in jeans and a leather jacket, his expression is that of confusion. GOD And here we go again... I cant help but feel sorry for you every time we meet. TOM Wait, where am I?, what happened? GOD Well, what do you remember? There is a brief pause, as Tom struggles to remember what just happened, just as he would trying to recount a dream. TOM There was a bus, it came out of nowhere, it... GOD (Nods his head) TOM I, I died? GOD Yeah, but dont feel bad about it, its happened before. TOM So this place... this is Heaven? GOD Its more like a waiting room.

TOM And your God? GOD Call me what you like, Lord, Father, God, it doesnt make much difference. TOM So what happens now then? Do I go to heaven or hell or what? GOD Reincarnation actually. TOM Reincarnation? GOD Reincarnation. If youd like to follow me. GOD stands away from his chair and leaves the room via an old door at the back, TOM follows closely behind. TOM Where are we going? GOD Nowhere in particular, just wanted to get some fresh air. As the door opens a bright light dazzles TOM as he follows GOD out through the door. TOM GAH! Its so bright! GOD I pull that trick on you every time, it never gets old. GOD claps his hands and the light gets dimmer, revealing a stunning view of the Galaxy. EXT. GALAXY, Theyre both stood on a floating balcony high overhead, behind them the doorway still shows the interior of the WAITING ROOM.

TOM Whats the point of reincarnation? GOD The point? TOM If Im just going to get reborn as a baby, everything I do doesnt matter, my whole life was meaningless. GOD Your lives arent meaningless. Just because you dont remember them doesnt mean they didnt happen. They enable you to grow, whether you are conscious of it or not. TOM Lives? How many times have I died? GOD Oh, far to many for it to be worth counting. TOM So theres a chance Ive interacted with one of my other lives then? GOD Almost a certainty. Tom pauses for a second, looking around at his surroundings. TOM What about everyone else? How come its only me and you here? GOD There is no one else, it is only me and you here. TOM What? What about everyone on Earth what happens when they die? GOD There is no one else, everyone on Earth? You are each one, each a fragment of a greater form of yourself.

TOM So Im everyone thats ever existed? GOD And will exist, you are humanity, every single essence of the word. You are every Murderer, Lover, Thief and Politician that ever lived, or will live. You are every life, every story, every accident that ever happened, you have been a victim to all the pain given and felt all the love shared. You are the Seven Billion people alive on Earth and you are my Son. TOM Why? GOD Because, you are destined to become like me, thats what you are. TOM Im like you?, So Im a God? GOD Not yet, not until youve finished living... Only then will you become like me. Only then will you be omnipotent. Only then will you take over the business. TOM But... when will I be ready? GOD Who knows? But Im afraid its time, your next life awaits... The screen cuts to black, the sounds of a Woman screaming are cut with a new born baby crying.
