1. OBJECTIVE
The objective of this procedure is to describe the methodology to carry out hydraulic pretest at special crossings before installing or assembling pipes in the trench. The final
hydrostatic test of the section will occur with the mainline pipeline.
2. APPLICABLE CODES
ASME B 31.4 PIPELINE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS FOR LIQUID
HYDROCARBONS AND OTHER LIQUIDS.
3. GENERAL
Prior to installing pipes at each special crossing they shall be tested hydraulically for a
period of one hour provided that no leaks have been detected or there has been no
decrease in the pressure during that time.
The hydraulic test head shall be tested independently for a period of two hours at a
pressure that will create 100% flow stress of the material. This pressure must be greater
than any pressure to be tested for the special crossings. The maximum working pressure
must be stamped on the test head .
All of the welded joints of the heads in the sections being tested shall be tested
radiographically, evaluated and approved in accordance with the standard API 1104
4. TEST PRESSURES
The test pressure shall be as a minimum 1.25 MAOP and must not exceed the pressure
that will create a stress greater than 100% SMYS.
In Annex 1 test pressures in relation to diameter and thickness of piping to be tested can
be found
