As most of us know by now, Devin Kohl-
man passed last week. He was a young
man who could barely move or speak, but
managed to bring an entire community
together. Of course, Devins family has a
tremendous nancial load ahead of them,
so Barb and Mel Ayers have decided to do
a special fundraiser this Monday, Nov. 25,
at Ciao Bella Restaurant on State Route 53
in Harbor Lights Landing. They are donat-
ing 10% of all their sales that day. They
will be open for lunch, dinner or carryout.
The food is incredibly good and the cause
is a very special one. Their theme is Give
Thanks, Give Back.

This past Friday, November 15,
Devin Kohlman was laid to rest after
a beautiful, moving ceremony at Im-
maculate Conception Church in Port
Clinton. Hundreds gathered for the
services and by the beginning of the
funeral there was standing room only.
The ceremony began with Devins
friends and football teammates ling
down the aisle and taking a knee one
last time for Devin.
Scripture was read by family and
close friends and then Father John
Missler gave the eulogy. The Father
spoke comforting words to those in
attendance, saying that to grieve so
whole-heartedly only means that we
are full of love and compassion.
Devins friend and teammate, Zach-
ery Murphy, said that Devins spirit
would be at every football game and
baseball game that he and his team-
mates will play. We had your back,
buddy, and now you have our backs
from up there, said Murphy.
It isnt just Devins family thats
mourning or even just our little com-
munity, but our state, our nation and
our world. Devins ght, struggle,
hope and love have touched thou-
sands of people. At the end of the cer-
emony, Devins mother Alexis spoke
and gave us a reminder of what Devin
has done for her and everyone else
who knew him or has heard his story,
He has taught us what is important
in life, which is love. He brought us
together to love each other.

On Monday, Nov. 11, Chris Redfern, Representative
Ohio House District 89, met with citizens for a ques-
tion and answer style town meeting at 9:45 a.m. at the
Ida Rupp Library in Port Clinton. During the meeting
Redfern said he would be seeking funding for the Sea
Grant Stone Lab in Put-In-Bay to get a new vessel and
funding for Erie Ottawa Airport and the Sandusky State
Theatre. Other topics were brought up by concerned
citizens, council members and state and city employees.
Drilling under Lake Erie
When asked about drilling under Lake Erie for oil and
gas, Redfern said that since he became elected to ofce
in 1999 he has tried to ban drilling underneath Lake
Erie. Only 10-20% of suggestions become legislation,
said Redfern, but it doesnt keep him from trying. In
Canada, the northern part of Lake Erie, there are hun-
dreds of wells, but the last well was built in the 1950s.
Redfern went on to say that 16 million people get their
drinking water from the Lake Erie Watershed. Salt wa-
ter drilling is very different from fresh water drilling be-
cause of this factor. There is also a risk of disturbing the
abundance of game sh in the western basin of the lake.
Extracting the gas and oil will only provide energy for
10-15 years. Redfern asks, What are the environmental
costs? Will it be worth it?
I err on the side of caution because of how impor-
tant Lake Erie is to all of us, said Redfern.
Waterworks Park
A newly elected council member asked what Redferns
stance was on the development of Waterworks Park. In
his response, Redfern took us back six or seven years to
when he and Randy Gardner fought for Port Clinton to
get grant money to build a marina. At that time the city
ofcials needed to get their act together said Redfern.
The grant money was ultimately lost because the mayor
at the time decided it wasnt a good idea to develop Wa-
terworks Park. The grant money from the government
would have paid for the marina.
Gardner and I are more than willing to go down that
path again to get state funding. With that being said,
there has to be follow through, said Redfern. Vermilion
and Huron both have great developments on their wa-
ter front to attract people to the downtown area and for
locals to have a place to enjoy events at the water front
all year round. Redfern suggests that Port Clinton look
into doing the same.
A Port Clinton citizen brought up the idea of turn-
ing Waterworks Park into a State Park. Redfern said, I
want to promote green space. Land on North Bass Is-
land has been set aside for no development. We need to
be stewards for future generations to enjoy Lake Erie.
In the case of Port Clinton, Redfern pointed out that it
might be a matter of maintenance. The cost of main-
taining the property if it were a park would be greater
than the capitol the land would be bringing in.
Do you know how many condos are in Port Clin-
ton? Redfern asked. I found out yesterday. There are
700. With those condos there are taxes collected that
pay for police, water etc. Thats taxes that are paid all
year round if someone is living in them or not.

Why are you living with hip pain?
Living with the pain can disrupt your entire life, but
a new hip replacement surgery, Anterior Minimally
Invasive Surgery (AMIS), leaves patients with less
pain after surgery, shorter recovery times and
reduced risk of limping. Gary Kresge, D.O.,
Magruder Orthopedic Surgeon, is one of the
few physicians in the area educated to
perform this new procedure.

certied to do so by the Director of
Agriculture. This has been proposed
because of the overwhelming algae blooms
that have taken place in Lake Erie, which
are thought to have a connection with the
excess runoff of the fertilizer entering the
lake.
Redfern said regarding Ohio Senate Bill
150, Hunting and shing are regulated;
ODNR and the EPA can suggest changes to
legislation. Education has to be done.
When farmers fertilize in other counties
to the west it goes in the Maumee River,
then to the lake. Education is necessary;
farmers wouldnt intentionally harm the
land. The soil is their livelihood, said Ot-
tawa County Commissioner Jim Sass.
Carroll Townships water system was
shut down because of the algae blooms.
Its messing with my business, but now
its messing with my family, said a Carroll
Township business owner and resident.
House Bill 592
House Bill 592 is a comprehensive solid
waste regulatory program. For the rst
time Ohio is required to minimize reli-
ance on landlls for managing solid waste
by increasing efforts to reduce, reuse and
recycle. An employee from the solid waste
district asked Redfern how this will affect
us.
Redfern said that this bill is a rewrite of a
bill that was put into play 20 years ago. I
dont want Columbus to make general de-
cisions for solid waste; I believe that should
be a local community decision. Landlls
are economic tools, not just dumps.
Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)
A resident asked Redfern what his
thoughts were on Obamacare and Redfern
had some enlightening information on the
subject. Redfern explained that each state
was given the opportunity to create ex-
changes regarding health care. The more
people in the exchange, the less it costs ev-
eryone. Ohio is foregoing an exchange and
is relying on the federal system. Ohio will
be getting more money for Medicaid. Med-
icaid will be federally funded. The more
people that are covered with health insur-
ance, the more health care people receive
and the cost of care will go down.
Redfern said that it is a huge mistake
to give away that power. He believes that
health care should be state regulated so
that we as a state have more control over
our own health care. Redfern believes its
cynical of the governor to take federal
money for Medicaid, but have such nega-
tivity towards the Affordable Care Act.
State based exchanges would lower cost
for everyone; its not going to socialize
health care, said Redfern.

Lakeside Chautauqua, a non-prot institution, has
joined #GivingTuesday, a national day of giving. Taking
place on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, #GivingTuesday harnesses
the collective power of non-prots, families, businesses
and individuals to transform how people think about, talk
about and participate in the giving season.
Coinciding with the Thanksgiving holiday and the kick-
off of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday re-
minds people about the importance of giving by inspir-
ing them to improve their local communities or support
important charities and causes.
For the rst time, Lakeside Chautauqua will partner
with the national #GivingTuesday movement and intro-
duce an initiative that supports childrens programming
in the community. All are invited to give a special gift on
Tuesday, Dec. 3, towards upgrades to Bradley Temple.
Built in the late 1800s, Bradley Temple is a facility dedi-
cated to childrens programing. After 126 years, children
still gather for music education, fellowship, worship, pup-
pet shows, bicycle safety and crafts.
Over the years, the huge volume of childrens programs
have put wear and tear on the building and the communi-
ty support from #GivingTuesday will enhance this historic
structure. The repairs needed include a new foundation,
electrical upgrades and interior improvements.
A generous Lakeside Chautauqua family has already
stepped forward with a matching gift challenge for the
community. Each dollar given to the #GivingTuesday
Bradley Temple Initiative will be matched, up to $25,000.
To participate, visit www.lakesideohio.com/givingtues-
day on Tuesday, Dec. 3, to make an online donation, or
call (419) 798-5396 with method of payment. Checks
may also be made payable to the Lakeside Chautauqua
Foundation, 236 Walnut Ave., Lakeside, OH 43440 with
#GivingTuesday in the memo line. For more informa-
tion, contact (419) 798-5396 or advancement@lakesideo-
hio.com.
Lakeside Chautauqua encourages local non-prots,
families, businesses and individuals to join the movement.
Currently, more than 2,600 corporate and non-prot or-
ganizations have committed to participating in this years
initiative.
For more information about #GivingTuesday, visit www.
givingtuesday.org. To join the conversation, use hashtag
#GivingTuesday on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
The Free community feast is scheduled for Thanksgiv-
ing Day, Nov. 28. On Thanksgiving Day, residents of the
Port Clinton area are invited for a fabulous Turkey dinner
at Trinity United Methodist Church, corner of Adams and
2nd Streets, from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. To celebrate the holi-
day, volunteers and committee members create a festive at-
mosphere and prepare a buffet of traditional foods for all
to enjoy.
If you are willing to pitch in and spend some time pre-
paring the food, helping us serve or delivering to our com-
munity shut-ins, we would love to have you in the crew,
said Chairman Ginna Fall. We continue to grow. It is great
fun to see our friends and neighbors gathering every year.
It really embodies the original meaning of Thanksgiving.
The committee continues to invite new volunteers, as
well as those who have assisted in past years, to help in
the Fellowship Hall. We welcome new smiling faces to
help every year. We have been very fortunate to continue
to have people step up and spend the day working with
us. Volunteers work in the kitchen and in the dining hall
overseeing table service, greeting, delivery coordination,
and food preparation and clean up. This event is made
possible through monetary and food donations from
the community as well as the great amount of time given by
local volunteers and committee members.
All are welcome to the free Thanksgiving Feast. We love
welcoming families who are gathering for the holiday. We
work to make sure they all get to sit together and stay as long
as they want. The committee encourages area residents to
bring families and friends, or to come alone and sit with
our groups, and join in celebrating this important time of
togetherness. Reservations are never required. Most of our
people join us because their family is scattered and they are
looking for the fellowship they nd here, said Fall. You
can expect a delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings.
Come and dig into the potatoes and vegetables and never
leave without a great piece of pie!
To volunteer, call Ginna Fall, 419-967-0185. To donate
food (hams, turkeys, canned sweet potatoes, green beans,
corn, carrots are needed), or for more information, call
Karen Reed 419-967-0814 by Fri. Nov. 22. Every year, vol-
unteers deliver meals to area shut ins. If you know a shut
in who would enjoy a hot turkey meal for Thanksgiving,
please contact Ginna Fall @ 419-967-0185.
As of today, there is still a need for donations of several
items for the meal, including
Gravy (lg cans) 14
Onions 20 lbs
Lemons 15
Turkey broth (lg cans) 25
Eggs (doz) 23

Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers
and homeowners, Lakeside Chautauqua
was honored last year with an America
in Bloom award for its
population category.
America in Bloom is a
nationwide competition
where judges visit com-
munities to rate them in
key areas, such as Floral
Displays, Landscaping,
Urban Forests, Environ-
mental Sustainability,
Historic Preservation
and Volunteerism.
As a result of last years
America in Bloom hon-
or, Lakeside Chautauqua
competed with an elite
group of towns similar
in size across the U.S.,
Canada and British Isles
this summer. This competition was part of
the International Challenge of the Com-
munities in Bloom program, a Montreal-
based organization.
The judges toured the historic Chau-
tauqua community to critique and meet
with organizational leaders, residents and
volunteers. Communities were evaluated
by an international jury on the accom-
plishments of their entire community on
eight key criteria: Tidiness, Environmen-
tal Action, Heritage Conservation, Urban
Forestry, Landscape Turf & Groundcovers,
Floral Displays and Community Involve-
ment.
The 2013 National Symposium and
Communities in Bloom Awards took place
on October 26. The winner of the Inter-
national Challenge was the Village of Ab-
beyshrule, Ireland. However, Lakeside
Chautauqua was honored with 5 Blooms,
the most Blooms a community can re-
ceived. In addition, Lakeside Chautauqua
received special recognition for Commu-
nity Involvement and Residential Gardens.
Following their evaluation,
volunteer judges Evelyn Alemanni
and Steve Preston wrote: Over

The Ohio Senate Wednesday approved
an amendment sponsored by Senator
Randy Gardner that strives to end open
lake dumping of dredged materials in Lake
Erie.
The Gardner amendment re-
appropriates approximate-
ly $1.6 million of exist-
ing state funds toward
conservation prac-
tices in the counties
of the Western Lake
Erie Basin and
specically pro-
vides for transfer-
ring money to the
Healthy Lake Erie
Fund to address
open lake dumping.
Lake Erie is one
of Ohios most impor-
tant natural assets, Gard-
ner said in sponsoring the
amendment. Open lake dumping
of dredge materials is one of several factors
we believe contributing to algae problems
in Lake Erie. We must be more aggressive
in our efforts to clean up the lake.
Gardners amendment received the sup-
port of agriculture groups, environmental
organizations and charter boat captains
who testied in the Senate Agriculture and
Natural Resources Committee on Wednes-
day. Gardner worked with the Ohio De-
partment of Natural Resources, the Ohio
Environmental Council and received sup-
port from the Ohio Farm Bureau for his
amendment.
We must do all we can to build bipar-
tisan coalitions in support of Lake Erie,
Gardner said. This effort against Lake
Erie dumping is another important step.
The Ohio Environmental Council agrees.
Senator Gardners amendment offers
a practical bridge between the need
to dredge the Toledo harbor
with the need to protect
Lake Erie from harm-
ful dredge material,
said Kristy Meyer,
managing direc-
tor of agricultural,
health & clean wa-
ter programs with
the Ohio Envi-
ronmental Coun-
cil. All lawmakers
should support it.
Gardner said it was
important to note that
the challenges in sup-
porting a healthier Lake
Erie became even greater this
year with the reported second-
worst algal bloom season on record.
I appreciate Senator Gardner sponsor-
ing this amendment and Senate Agricul-
ture Committee Chairman Hite and the
committee for supporting it, ODNR Di-
rector Jim Zehringer said. This will be an
important rst step in addressing a pos-
sible alternative to the open lake disposal
of dredge material and the associated nu-
trients that can impact Lake Erie.
Gardners amendment is included in
legislation scheduled for a nal commit-
tee and Senate oor vote next week. The
bill and amendment will then be consid-
ered by the House of Representatives in
December.

Devins Heart
The whole world watched in awe
As you smiled through it all.
You dealt with the pain,
And your reward is heavens gain
Your heart was so BIG
It brought a community together
Everybody loved, hugged and cried together
But now its time for you to go
And for your family
You proved it, you asked God to make it snow
So now the world will know forever
Devins heart will go on
It will last forever

BY YANEEK SMITH
Sandusky Bay Conference Player of the Year, rst-team
North Central District and second-team All-Ohio in Di-
vision III--it was a ne season for Oak Harbor freshman
Emma Barney.
In her rst year with the varsity squad Barney, who was
second on the team with 30 goals and rst with 21 assists,
was instrumental in leading the Rockets to the Final Four
for the rst time in the programs history.
In ve of the previous 10 seasons, Oak Harbor had ad-
vanced to the district nal only to lose each time, but this
year, the Rockets (19-2-1) got over the hump and won ve
games in the Div. III Tournament to make it to the state
seminals.
Along the way, Oak Harbor defeated Central Catholic
(5-1), Swanton (2-0), Woodmore (5-0), Continental (3-
0) and Liberty-Benton (2-1) before falling to Gates Mills
Hawken, 4-1.
Im denitely really proud of my team because we
proved people wrong (by getting to regionals), Barney
said. We had never gotten past districts before and it was
nice to have people coming out and supporting us.
It was a great experience for the community, too, one
that has seen few teams advance to the state seminals in
any sport. Oak Harbor has never had a team win a state
championship, though the wrestling program has two
second-place nishes (2008, 10), the boys basketball
team was the runner up in 1983 and the football team ad-
vanced to the Final Four twice in 99 and 06.
It was a magical run, head coach Renee Goldstein said.
I know it sounds goofy, but thats what it was. It was like
a dream. We had the town behind, the kids behind us, the
community behind us, almost every SBC coach was at the
game against Hawken. You think its just your family and
friends at Oak Harbor, but we had a lot of people (from
the conference) there. You dont realize how many people
are there sometimes because your backs are to the stands.
My sister has never been to a soccer game in the 11 years
that Ive coached and she came. It was amazing there
are no words to describe it. I wish every coach would get
this opportunity.
There was never any drama and we all just got along
really well, Barney said. Age never mattered. It wasnt
unusual to see the older players with the younger play-
ers. We became friends with people we thought wed never
become friends with.
What sets Barney apart from other players is her com-
mitment to the sport. She plays soccer in the spring and
summer and, under the guidance of former head coach
Jorge Diaz at the PSC Impact Academy in Perrysburg, has
developed and enhanced her skills as shes grown up.
Well, I played for Jorge Diaz since I was about 10 years
old and he denitely helped me a lot by improving my
foot skills and having me go against better players, Bar-
ney said. You cant just quit playing (after the fall season).
You have to keep making yourself better and better and
keep getting stronger and (continue to) play.
As for now, Barney will turn her attention to basketball
where shell join a talented bunch that went 16-8 and won
a game in the sectional tournament last year. Despite los-
ing several key players from last season, the Rockets do
feature a very talented group of freshman that are expect-
ed to help the team retool this year.
Barney named
SBC Player of the
Year as a freshman

Thanksgiving is often a time of reection. Michael
Metzger, who recently moved to Ottawa County, took a
moment to think about what he is most thankful for and
answered that it was his family, friends, his ability to drive,
and have fun. Mikes life is full of people that he enjoys
spending time with such as his mom, brother, Lisa (his
girlfriend and best friend of 14 years), Lisas family, co-
workers, self advocacy team members, his SSA and his
counselor at The Giving Tree.
Mike resides with three roommates and his cat Gareld
in Port Clinton. In his spare time, Mike visits both his
mom and his brother, who live nearby, and especially en-
joys spending time with Lisa. He explained that Lisa and
his relationship works well as they are total opposites, and
use their strengths to take care of each other. One thing
they enjoy together is their love of Weird Al Yankovich.
Both Mike and Lisas families know how much the couple
loves to attend Weird Als concerts and often give them
tickets as gifts at Christmas or birthdays. Most recently
Mike and Lisa saw Weird Al in concert in the Akron area.
Mikes favorite Weird Al song is the ever popular Eat It!
When not attending concerts, Mike and Lisa enjoy visiting
Cedar Point (Mikes favorite is The Iron Dragon), movie
theaters, and helping out at East Harbor Campground, es-
pecially during the annual Trick or Treat event.
This past summer Lisas family suggested that they take
part in the Erie County Fairs contest The animal in me
show. Mike was paired up with a local 4-H student who
showed a goat, was awarded the Heart Trophy and re-
ceived a gift card to a local waterpark. Mike and Lisa en-
joyed the experience so much that they are already signed
up for next year.
The ability to drive is something that Mike doesnt take
for granted, as it allows him to do different things in the
community. He has a job, attends self-advocacy meetings,
helps his mother with doctor appointments, runs errands,
and, of course, drives for dates. Mike currently works for
RVI, where he goes to different locations throughout the
county and performs janitorial duties. When not work-
ing, Mike is very involved in self-advocacy groups in both
Ottawa and Erie Counties. He holds several ofces and is
looking forward to attending Project STIR this November.
Mike is grateful to both his SSA and his Case Manager at
the Giving Tree who have helped him connect with others
to assist Mike to learn additional skills and become more
independent. One of his most recent accomplishments is
being able to cook bacon in the oven and make pancakes.
Mike shared that he is working hard at becoming more
independent so that one day he may live on his own and
marry his best friend Lisa.

Mike has a cornucopia of gratitude this Thanksgiving
Michael Metzger and friend Lisa
AAA works year-round to educate motorists about driv-
ing practices that will help keep them safe and reduce traf-
c-related crashes and the injuries that can result. To help
members and non-members celebrate safely this Thanks-
giving holiday, AAA Northwest Ohio is offering a Tipsy
Tow service from Wednesday, Nov. 27 through Thursday,
Nov. 28. While AAA encourages party goers to designate
a driver if they plan to consume alcohol this holiday, the
Tipsy Tow service is available to assist those who nd
themselves in an impaired situation and need to get them
and their vehicles home safely.
To take advantage of Tipsy Tow in Ottawa County or
elsewhere in Northwest Ohio, drivers should:

ebrate Thanksgiving safely while helping fulll AAAs

way ride for the driver and
their vehicle at no cost for
up to 10 miles. Services will
not be provided to motorists
requesting a tow to another
drinking establishment or to
a destination other than their

allowed if the motorist is, or
plans to become, a guest.
Other services that will not
be provided as part of the Tip-
sy Tow program include: requests for a vehicle start, at
tire change, gas delivery and/or taxi service. For trips lon-
ger than 10 miles, motorists can expect to be charged the
towing companys standard rate. If members are requir-
