St Nektarios of Pentapolis & Aegina

St Nectarios was born on 1 October 1846, in Selymbria in Thrace to Dimos and Maria Cephalas and was Baptised Anastasios. At the age of 14 he went to Constantinople to work and further his education. In 1866 he left for the island of Chios to take a teaching post.At the age of thirty St Nektarios was tonsured as a Monk and three yeas later he was ordained as Deacon. In 1885 St Nektarios graduated from the University of Athens - having written many books, pamphlets and commentaries on Holy Scripture and went to Alexandria, Egypt, where he was ordained a Priest, serving the Church of Saint Nicholas in Cairo with great distinction. In recognition of his natural Piety and brilliance as a Preacher, as well as his administrative ability, he was consecrated Bishop/Metropolitan of Pentapolis (an ancient Diocese in Cyrenaica, in what is now Libya) by the Greek Orthodox Patriarch Sophronios in 1889. He served as Bishop in Cairo for one year, but was then unjustly removed from his post as a result of lies made up by jealous Clerics who envied his popularity with the people. His former Patron, Patriarch Sophronios refused to listen to St Nektarios, who was forced to leave Egypt without trial or explanation and was never given an opportunity to defend himself. After his unjust dismissal, St Nektarios returned to Greece in 1891 and spent several years as a Preacher (1891-1894). He was then appointed Director of the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School for the education of Priests in Athens, where his Service to God for fifteen years was exemplary. He developed many courses of study and wrote numerous books, all while preaching widely throughout Athens. In 1904 at the request of several Nuns, he established a Monastery for them on the island of Aegina, in honour of the Holy Trinity. In December of 1908, at the age of 62, St. Nektarios resigned from his post as School Director and withdrew to the Holy Trinity Convent on Aegina, where he lived out the rest of his Life as a Monk. He wrote, published, preached, and heard Confessions from those who came from near and far to seek out his wonderful, humble but Inspired, Spiritual Guidance. While at the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, St Nektarios, Metropolitan of the island of Aegina, also tended the gardens, carried stones, and helped with the construction of the Monastery buildings that were built with his own funds. St Nektarios died on the evening of 9 November, 1920, at the age of 74, following hospitalization for prostate cancer. His body was taken to the Holy Trinity Monastery, where he was buried by a Priest-Monk named Savvas, who later painted the first Icon of St Nektarios, whose funeral was attended by multitudes of Faithful Christians from all parts of Greece and Egypt. Many people regarded St Nektarios as a Saint during his Lifetime because of his Prayerful Life, his sincere Humility, his profound Purity and all his other Virtues, as well as his writings and the Miracles he performed. He had also been bestowed with the Gift of Prescience.

Before the writing of the Holy Scriptures - that is, the writing of the Holy Gospels, the Acts and the Epistles of the Holy Apostles, and, before they were spread to all the churches of the world - the Holy Church of Christ was based on verbal Holy Tradition. Therefore, the Holy Scriptures are only a small part of the entire Holy Tradtion of the Church of Christ. Our Holy Church Fathers regard Holy Tradition as the safe Guide in the correct interpretation of Holy Scripture and absolutely necessary for understanding the Truths contained in the Holy Scripture. The Church received many Traditions from the Apostles... The constitution of the Church Services, especially of the Divine Liturgy, the Holy Mysteries themselves and the manner of performing them, certain Prayers and other institutions of the Church begin with the Holy Tradition of the Apostles of Christ. In their conferences, the Holy Synods draw not only from Holy Scripture, but also from Holy Tradition as though from a Pure Fountain Thus, the Seventh Ecumenical Synod declares in the 8th Decree: "If one violates any part of the Church Tradition, either written or unwritten, let him be anathema."

On Discovering God
It is evident that unbelief is an evil offspring of an evil heart; for the guileless and pure heart discovers God and discerns Him everywhere, and always unhesitatingly believes in His Existence. When those of pure heart look at the World of Nature - that is, at the sky, the earth, and the sea and at all things in them, and observe the systems constituting them, the infinite multitude of stars of heaven, the innumerable multitudes of birds and quadrupeds and every kind of animal of the earth, the variety of plants on it, the abundance of fish in the sea - they are immediately amazed and exclaim with King David the Psalmist: "How great are Thy works, O Lord! In Wisdom Thou made them all!" Impelled by their pure hearth, such people also discover God in the Realm of Grace of His Holy Church, from which those who are evil are far removed. Those who are pure of heart believe in His Holy Church and admire and respect and Love Her Spiritual System where we are able to discover and Experience the very Presence of Almighty God in Her Holy Mysteries, in the Heights of Theology, in the Light of the Divine Revelations, in the Divine Truth of Christs Teachings, in the Commandments of His Divine Law, in the achievements of the Saints, in the very Good Deed, in every Perfect Gift, and in general in the whole of Creation. Justly then did our Lord say in His Beatitudes of those possessing Purity of the heart: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

The Divine Light Illumines the pure heart and the pure intellect, because these are susceptible to receiving the Divine Light - whereas impure hearts and intellects, not being susceptible to receiving Illumination, have an aversion to the Divine Light of Knowledge and Truth. Those whose hearts are impure prefer the darkness of ignorance and sin. God Loves those who have a pure heart and He listens to their Prayers and grants them their requests that lead to Salvation. Furthermore He reveals Himself to them and teaches them the Mysteries of His Divine Nature.

When the Holy Relics of St Nektarios were removed from the grave on 2 September, 1953, they exuded a beautiful fragrance of Sanctity, which wafted throughout the area for a while, as had occurred after his Repose at the hospital in 1920. Official recognition of St Nektarios as a Saint by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople took place on 20 April, 1961. Thousands of Divine Miracles are attributed to his Intercession, particularly in cases of cancer or other serious illnesses which have been cured.

On the Church
The term Church, according to the strict Orthodox view, has two meanings, one of them expressing its Doctrinal and religious character -that is: its Inner, peculiarly Spiritual Essence, and the other expressing its external character. Thus, according to the Orthodox Confession, the Church is defined in a twofold manner: as a religious Institution, and as a religious Community (Koinonia). The definition of the Church as a religious Institution may be formulated thus: The Church is a Divine Religious Institution of the New Covenant, which is built by our Saviour, Jesus Christ, through His incarnate Dispensation, established upon Faith on the day of Holy Pentecost by the Descent of the All-Holy Spirit upon the Holy Disciples and Apostles of our Lord, whom He rendered as His Holy Instruments of Divine Grace for the perpetuation of His Work of Redemption. In this Holy Institution is entrusted the totality of Revealed Truths, within which operates Divine Grace through the Holy Mysteries whereby those who with Faith approach our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and are Regenerated. The Holy Church of Christ has Faithfully and Truthfully preserved both the Written and the Verbal Apostolic Teachings and Holy Tradition. The definition of the Church as a Religious Community may be formulated thus: The Church is a Society of mankind United in the Unity of the Holy Spirit and the Bond of Peace. The Holy Church of Christ consists of the Church Militant and the Church Triumphant - for She is the Church Militant so long as we Struggle against the wickedness of the evil one for the prevalence of the Goodness and Blessings of God, and She is the Church Triumphant in Heaven where Choirs of the Righteous, who successfully Struggled during their Lifespan were consequently Perfected in Faith and in Virtue. Holy Tradition is the very Church of Christ because without Holy Tradition the Church does not exist and those who reject or deny the complete and Perfect Holy Tradition deny the Church of Christ, our Lords Teachings and Commandments as well as the preaching of His Holy Apostles and our Holy Church Fathers throughout the ages who preserved and maintained Divine Truth.

Alexandria 15th September 1998 The Holy Spirit has Enlightened the gathered members of the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa, under the leadership of His Beatitude, Petros VII, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa, more than a century since Saint Nektarios, the great Teacher and Father of the Holy Eastern Orthodox Church was expelled from the Church of Alexandria, to reach the following decision: Taking into account the resolution of the Church to rank Saint Nektarios amongst the Saints because of his innumerable Miracles and his acceptance within the Religious Conscience of Orthodox Christians throughout the world, we appeal to the Mercy of the Ever-Charitable God. We hereby restore the Ecclesiastical Order of the Saint of our Century, Saint Nektarios, and grant to him all due credits and honours. We beseech Saint Nektarios to forgive both us, unworthy as we are, and our predecessors, our Brothers of the Throne of Alexandria, for opposition to the Saint and for all which, due to human weakness or error, our Holy Father, Bishop of Pentapolis, Saint Nektarios, suffered. St Nektarios of Pentapolis & Aegina

On Christianity.
Christianity is not a certain philosophic system, about which learned people, trained in metaphysical studies, argue and then either espouse or reject, according to the opinion each one has formed. Christianity is Faith, established in the soul of mankind, which ought to be spread to the many and be maintained in our consciousness. There are Truths in Christianity that are above our intellectual comprehension, incapable of being grasped by our finite mind. Our intellect takes cognizance of them, becomes convinced of their Reality, and testifies about their Supernatural Existence. Christianity is a religion of Divine Revelation. The Divine reveals Its Glory only to those who have been Perfected through Virtue. Christianity teaches Perfection through Virtue and demands that Its followers become Holy and Perfect. Christianity disapproves of and opposes those who are under the influence of the imagination. Those who are truly Perfect in Virtue who have become through Divine Help and Grace outside the flesh and the world - truly enter another, Spiritual World - not, however, through the imagination, but through the Effulgence of Divine Grace. Without Divine Grace, without Divine Revelation, no one - not even the most virtuous -can transcend the flesh and the world. God reveals Himself to the humble, who live in accordance with Virtue. Those who take up the wings of the imagination attempt the flight of Ikaros and suffer the same end. Those who harbour fantasies do not pray; for those who pray uplift their mind and heart towards God, whereas those who turn to fantasies, divert themselves from God. Those who are addicted to the imagination have withdrawn from God's Grace and from the Realm of Divine Revelation. They have abandoned the heart in which Divine Grace is revealed and have surrendered themselves to the imagination, which is devoid of all Grace. It is only the heart that receives Knowledge about things that are not apprehended by the senses, because God, Who dwells and moves within us, speaks within us and reveals to us the Substance of Things hoped for. We must seek God daily. But we must seek Him in our heart, not outside it. And when we find Him, we must stand with fear and trembling, like the Cherubim and the Seraphim, for our heart has become a Throne of God. In order to find God, we must become as humble as dust before our Lord, for He abhors the proud and the arrogant, whereas He Visits those who are humble in heart and that is why He said: "To whom will I look, but to those who are meek and humble in heart?"

to the study fo the Law of God, and in so doing Thou emulated the Life of the Saints of old. When Thou made the mind that is set on the flesh subject tot he spirit, Thou did what was good, and Thou clothed Thyself in Holiness, as a Hierarch wise in things Divine and a genuine Worker of Virtue. Therefore, you were vividly glorified by God, and the Casket of Thy Holy Relics became a Well-Spring of cures and healings, by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit. Now we pray Thee, O Blessed Nektarios, sprinkle into our souls the Nectar of Thy Grace, and Intercede with the Lord to grant us His Great Mercy.

Therefore he proclaimed it in Orthodox Manner, that Thou, O Theotokos, art at the same time a Pure Virgin and the Mother of Christ our Giod.
