Im pleased to post the following interview with one of the Hindu bloggers that Ive admired for some

time Jayasree Saranathan writes the blog Non-random thoughts. She introduces herself as Sanathanist. his is a new section that we are starting in Hindu !log. "e plan to interview our readers# people who comment regularly# writers and editors associated with Hinduism# Hindu bloggers and editors# Saints# s$eptics and other religious people. here is a particular reason for starting the interview with Jayasree Saranathan it is women who have always $ept the flame of Santana %harma steady. It is they how have always protected the flame of core teachings and tradition from numerous attac$s from within and outside. &nd it is they who always passed the flame from one generation to another. It is through our mothers that we come into contact with this great tradition. Hindu Blog "hen you say I am a Hindu# what does it mean to you' Srimati Jayasree Saranathan - "hen I say that I am a Hindu# it means to abide by the wisdom of (edantha. he (edanthic wisdom is encapsulated in ) sources# namely# *panishads# !rahma Sutras and !hagawad +ita. he idea of the self# the Supreme# the ,arma theory and the -eali.ation of self as the Supreme Self are the essentials taught by this wisdom. &ny effort that ta$es one to these thoughts will ma$e one a Hindu# according to me. Hindu Blog "hat do you thin$ is the greatest strength of Hinduism' Srimati Jayasree Saranathan - Its eternity. Hinduism is not an /ism. It is the basic science of the *niverse of the living and the non living in manifest and unmanifest forms. So no one can destroy it. It always 01I S. &t times it may be forgotten. 0ven then# someone will come up with the acumen to e2plore Nature and will eventually find out the (edanthic wisdom. hat is how even after a worst ,aliyuga where Hinduism seems to suffer a low# there will come up ,rutha yuga or +olden &ge when sages will restore this wisdom. No one can destroy Hinduism. Hindu Blog %o you thin$ many scholars and politicians have purposefully misinterpreted the teachings of Hinduism' If yes# how do you thin$ the Hindu society should be correcting the damages' Srimati Jayasree Saranathan - 3y answer is yes and no. 3any politicians and vested interests have misinterpreted it but not all Hindu scholars have purposefully misinterpreted. !ut the cause of the decline is due to the incorrect understanding of Hinduism. 4or e2ample# worship and prayers are viewed as 5uic$ fi2 solutions to ones problems. hat ma$es worship a $ind of bargain with god. his is incorrect. 0very birth comes with a balance sheet of positive and negative $armas and what you do in a birth brings out continuous corrections to it. hroughout the innings# +od stands inside you# outside you and also as the !ase where you wor$ - giving you a lot of scope for bettering the balance sheet. "hat finally comes out depends on the status of your balance sheet that you brought with you at the time of birth. here is no instant waiver of your bad times. !ut +od reali.ation ma$es you overcome the pains and sufferings of the bad times and help you move beyond mundane sufferings. 6opulari.ing this (edanthic wisdom and bringing out its subtleties in day to day issues# in relation to changing times and to newer life struggles# are needed to be done. "hen misinterpretations are done by vested interests with malicious intent# we have to strongly thwart them. Hindu Blog %o you thin$ Hindus are not active enough in the sphere of religious activities# especially defending it against misinformation and mudslinging' Srimati Jayasree Saranathan - 7es. &wareness is less. Hindu Blog How would you e2plain Sanatana %harma to a child who is constantly guided by

monolithic institutions' Srimati Jayasree Saranathan - I will e2plain it )-fold as why there are many gods# how a single +od e2ists and what we must do. I ta$e our !ody for comparison. "e have many organs and limbs to do specific 8obs such as hands to wor$# feet to wal$ and internal organ systems such as respiratory# digestive systems etc that wor$ as independent systems with a specific purpose. 9i$ewise many gods are assigned specific portfolios to oversee their respective 8obs in the vast scheme of the *niverse and 9ife. !ut all the organs owe their functioning to the 3aster computer called the !rain. hey discharge their wor$ only at the instance of the !rain whose control over them is not reali.ed by us. Similarly the Supreme !rahman is in control of the entire universe though His presence is not felt by us openly. Just as we thin$ of only those visible organs which do wor$ for us# we thin$ of some +ods but such thought must ma$e us reali.e the presence of the Super !rain li$e Supreme +od. Now thin$ of life. "hen I say that I live# where is that life force or soul located' Is it in the s$ull# or in the heart or in the hand or in the leg' 0verywhere in my body or in every part of my body# 9ife force has permeated. It is as though 9ife 4orce is everywhere in my body or my body is fi2ed in 9ife 4orce. Similarly# +od permeates every part of :reation and every part of :reation is fi2ed in Him. his is the import of Narayana tattwa He resides in everything and everything resides in Him. Now what we must do with this reali.ation of the !ody and 9ife 4orce' %o we ever harm our body# our body parts or life' Never. "e always ta$e good care of every part of our body. "e ta$e utmost care to $eep them in fantastic wor$ing condition. 9i$ewise do the same to the many +ods# to the Single Supreme +od and do whatever you must to ma$e their name and fame shine at all times. hat is the duty of every Hindu towards this %harma. Hindu Blog &s a mother what would be the first lesson that you will be teaching about Hinduism to your child' Srimati Jayasree Saranathan - 4aith# blind 4aith that god is always with them# watching them. "herever they go# whatever they do# +od is coming along with them and silently watching them. If they do some mischief# +od $nows. If they tell some lies# +od $nows. "henever they thin$ that they have done something wrong or something that must not be done# tell them to tell +od sincerely why they did that and pray that He forgives them and ma$e them not repeat it. wo things are achieved by this. & sense of what is right and what is wrong is inculcated at the very young age and that they are answerable to god. 3odern age psychiatrists will say that we must allow the child to e2periment and $now. hat wor$s well with things but not with attitudes and behavior. If one $eeps e2perimenting with life# entire life will pass on with e2perimentations. In Hinduism we have numerous stories of -ama# ,rishna# puranas and Neeti tales to $now what is to be done and what is not to be done. hese stories must be told right from the young days and a 4aith in +od must be taught. &fter that# once they grow up to thin$ on their own# let them e2plore what they learnt as 4aith. 9et them search# see$# 5uestion and argue but with a strong foundation seeded in their young mind about this %harma. ;nly then they will come up with better understanding of this %harma and not lose it due to ignorance. In my life# I grew up li$e that and believed that I am always surrounded by -ama and 9a$shmana on my right and left sides with Sita leading me in the front and Hanuman guarding me from behind. "hen all the four directions are secure with their presence# there is no need to worry# or fear this was my childhood imagination. It continues even today.

I used to as$ lot of 5uestions more li$e an atheist# but the deep faith within me always ma$es me search for that answer that conforms to that 4aith and not that which sha$es that 4aith. 0ven if there is something that is not convincing# I used to tell myself that Hinduism or (edic "isdom can not be wrong. 3ay be I have to grow up better to understand the correct import. Hindu Blog "hich boo$ <s= would you be suggesting to a teenager who wants to learn about Sanatana %harma' Srimati Jayasree Saranathan - 6resently %avid 4rawleys and Stephan ,napps boo$s are there. In amil I suggest to start with ,annadasans /&rthamulla Indu matham series and /%eivatthin ,ural by ,anchi 6aramacharyar In my case# I have always depended on original te2ts. (edartha Sangraha by -amanu8acharya is a small boo$ that contains the essence of (edic wisdom. Hindu Blog How have you fared as a blogger writing about Sanatana %harma' Srimati Jayasree Saranathan - I dont $now. &s for me# whatever $nowledge we have# must be imparted to others without any $ind of e2pectation. It is a duty that I write. "hoever is there in the similar frame of thought# or whoever is searching for these information# will come to my blog. hats all. Hindu Blog %o you thin$ Hindus are not active enough on the internet' Srimati Jayasree Saranathan - I dont thin$ so. Internet has opened up a better scope for more people to access the info on Hinduism. In those days# we have to search for boo$s in old and new boo$ shops. oday# net has made it easy to the reach of people. Sharing and forwarding has also made the spread of information faster and effective. 3any Hindus who are non serious in religious activity# do stumble upon the views on Hinduism and pic$ up inertest as a result. Hindu Blog "hat would you li$e to say to Hindus who are the readers of Hindu !log' Srimati Jayasree Saranathan - 9ife will teach them appropriate lessons at appropriate times. If they have the awareness of (edic wisdom on $arma and dharma# those lessons can be well received by them and can help them grow in Self reali.ation. he *ltimate (edanthic wisdom is that our :onsciousness must grow to become one with the Supreme :onsciousness. How that happens are all schools of thought li$e whether they become one with hat or become identical to hat. !ut what is to be understood is that we are in the continuous process of evolution of the consciousness. %harma# &rtha and ,aama e2ercised in the right spirit and within norms help us to achieve this evolution. 4or this# we need to $now what %harma sastras say. Simple way is to study the !hagawad +ita particularly the >nd chapter and absorb what is told in it and live by it. 9et everyone develop the habit of reading this chapter atleast and $eep thin$ing on the meaning. hat is sure way for evolution of the :onsciousness. 3y than$s to you for giving this opportunity to e2press my views. 9et there be 6eace at three levels of e2istence. Sarve 8anah su$hino bhavanthu? his is 8ust a small start that we are ma$ing today. I would li$e those read this interview to write to me hindublog@gmail.com or post in the comment section their thoughts and the persons that they would li$e to see interviewed <it can be any person associated with Hinduism=. 7ou can also write to us on topics that on which you feel your views need to be heard. "e will publish it at Hindu !log.
