ME 2254 - Strength of materials

PART-A (Answer all questions) 5 * 2 = 10

1. List any four methods of determining slope and deflection of loaded beam. 2. Define critical load 3. State Rankines formula for crippling load 4. Define column and strut 5. State slenderness ratio
PART-B (Answer all questions) 4 * 10 = 40

1. A 1.2m long column has a circular cross section of 45mm diameter one of the ends of the column is fixed in direction and position and the other end is free. Taking factor of safety as 3, calculate the safe load using (i) Rankines formula, take yield stress = 560 N/mm2 and a = 1/1600 for pinned ends. (ii) Eulers formula, youngs modulus for cast iron = 1.2 x 10 5 N/mm2. 2. The external and internal diameters of a hollow cast iron column are 50mm and 40mm respectively. If the length of this column is 3m and both of its ends are fixed, determine the crippling load using Eulers formula taking E = 100 GPa. Also determine the Rankine load for the column assuming fc = 550MPa and = 1/1600. 3. An I section joint 500mm x 250mm x 25mm and 5m long is used as a column with both ends are fixed. Calculate critical load for the column. Take E = 2 x 10 5. 4. Find the Euler critical load for a hollow cylindrical cast iron column 150mm external diameter, 20mm wall thickness if it is 6m long with hinged at both ends. Assume Youngs modulus of cast iron as 80KN/mm 2. Compare this load with that given by Rankine formula. Using Rankine constants a =1/1600 and 567N/mm2.
