Practicum Theme: Thanksgiving Fiction or Nonfiction Teacher: E. OConnell Stage 1 Identify Desired Results

Virginia State Standards: K.9 The student will demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts. a) Identify what an author does and what an illustrator does. b) Relate previous experiences to what is read. c) Use pictures to make predictions. d) Begin to ask and answer questions about what is read e) Use story language in discussions and retellings. f) Retell familiar stories, using beginning, middle, and end. g) Discuss characters, setting, and events. K.10 The student will demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction texts. a) Use pictures to identify topic and make predictions. b) Identify text features specific to the topic, such as titles, headings, and pictures Common Core: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.5 Recognize common types of texts CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.1a Follow words from left to right, top to bottom, and page by page. Understandings
Fiction books tell stories. Nonfiction books provide information. Authors tell stories using text. Illustrators tell stories using pictures.

Essential Questions
What is the difference between a fiction and nonfiction book? What types of books are fictional? What can you learn from a nonfiction book? Is a Thanksgiving book fiction or nonfiction? Why?
