1. From the data given below, calculate the indicated power, brake power and draw heat balance sheet for a two stroke diesel engine run for 20 minutes at full load. : Speed : 350 rpm Mean effective pressure : 3.1 bar Net brake load : 640 N Fuel consumption : 1.52 kg Cooling water : 162 kg Cooling water temperature rise : 25 o C Air used/kg of fuel : 32 kg Room temperature : 25 o C Exhaust temperature : 305 o C Barometric pressure : 1.013 bar Cylinder bore & stroke : 200 mm & 280 mm Brake diameter : 1m The fuel has a calorific value of 43,900 kJ/kg and steam formed per kg of fuel in exhaust = 1.4 kg. Take R = 0.287 kJ/kg K, Cp for dry exhaust gases = 1.0 kJ/kg K and Cps for superheated steam = 2.09 kJ/kg K. 2. Explain the following terms: (i) Radioactivity (ii) Half life (iii) Mass defect (iv) Binding energy (v) Nuclear fission (vi) Moderation 3. Explain the phenomenon of governing of Pelton wheel and Francis turbine in detail with the help of neat labelled diagrams. 4. Describe the characteristics of various types of turbines used in hydro-electric power stations with reference to (a) head (b) part load efficiency and maximum efficiency (c) specific speed. State how these factors help in the choice of turbine. 5. Discuss the phenomenon of cavitation in hydraulic turbines. Explain the methods to avoid it and also explain the various types of draft tubes along with their sketches.

6. During the trial of a single cylinder oil engine, cylinder diameter 200 mm, stroke 280 mm, working on two - stroke cycle and firing every cycle, the following observations were made: Duration of trial = 1 hour, Total fuel used = 4.22 kg, Calorific value = 44670 kJ/kg, Proportion of hydrogen in fuel = 15%, Total number of revolutions = 21000, Indicated mean effective pressure = 2.74 bar, Net load applied to a drum of 1 m diameter = 600 N, Total mass of cooling water circulated = 495 kg, Inlet temperature of cooling water = 13 oC, Outlet temperature of cooling water = 38oC, Air used = 135 kg, Temperature of air used in test room = 20oC, o Temperature of exhaust gases = 370 C. Assume : Cp (gases) = 1.005 kJ/kg K ; Cp (steam) at atmospheric pressure = 2.093 kJ/ kg K. Calculate indicated thermal efficiency and draw the heat balance sheet on minute basis. 7. The following data refers to a proposed hydroelectric power plant: Available head = 27 m Catchment area = 430 sq. km. Rainfall = 150 cm/year Percentage of total rainfall utilized = 65% Penstock efficiency = 95% Turbine efficiency = 80% Generator efficiency = 86% Load factor = 0.45 Calculate: (i) The power developed. (ii) Peak load capacity. (iii) Suggest suitable turbines for the plant. ******************************************************************************
