2. JOB DESCRIPTION : The Solar Electric Technician installs, tests and services the stand alone PV solar home system (SHS). 3. LIST OF TASK : L-1 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 1.5 1.6 Mounting and installing of solar PV module/panel. Installing the charge controller. Installing the battery. Wiring for Solar Home System. Interconnecting the system. Testing of the installed system.

QUALIFYING NOTES (ENTRY REQUIREMENTS, etc.):PHICYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : a) Physically able to do the above mentioned job. b) Should not be color blind. ENTRY REQUIRENMENTS : 1. Literate. 2. Training in the relevant field, minimum of one year work experience in the related field, or. 3. One month (160 hours) Training in the relevant field or 4. Any other requirements set by NSTB.

Receives verbal and/or written instructions. Lists & collects the required materials, tools & instruments. Tests the Solar PV Module/Panel. Locates the position for mounting the pole on the building. Installs the pole firmly and the securely. Installs solar PV module on the support structure/frame. Connects UV (Ultra Violet) protected correct size cables. Fixes support structure (frame) on the wooden/metallic pole. Lays the UV protected correct size cables from Solar PV module/panel to the charge controller.

TASK PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: Materials : Solar PV module/panel, connecting cables (UV Protective), support structure, wooden/ metallic pole, cable clips, clamp with set of nuts and bolts, cable shoe. Tools : Standard electrician tool kit, monkey pliers, slide wrench, plumb bob, hammer. Instrument : Multimeter, DC Clamp meter, Magnetic compass, Angle meter/Set Square, measuring tape with mercury level.

Solar PV module/panel tested for physical damage and open circuit voltage & short circuit current measured. The mounting pole installed firmly and the securely. Solar PV module installed on the support structure/frame firmly & securely. UV protected cables connected to the positive & negative terminals of the Solar PV module/panels junction Box. Support structure (frame) fixed on the wooden/metallic pole firmly & securely. The cables laid between Solar PV module and the charge controller.

Knows the importance of solar modules in solar electricity generation and its cost. Knows the importance of cleanness of solar PV module/panel. Knows the importance of using specified tools in mounting and erecting PV modules/panels. Knows the importance of testing the voltage of the module before mounting and erecting on the pole. (a) How to open the junction box at the back of the PV modules/panels. (b) The way of identifying the + ve and - ve terminals of the PV module/ panel and connecting the testing probes of the multimeter to the terminals. (c) Checks the bypass diode. (if any) Knows the importance of facing and inclination of the PV module/panel and the use of mercury level and magnetic compass to make sure that the PV module/panel faces South at an inclination of 30 degree. Knows the technique of installing the pole and the use of Plumb bob to make sure that the pole is vertically erected securely. Knows the technique and procedures of assembling the support structure and mounting the PV module/panel on the structure. Knows the way to connect UV protected cables to the terminals of Solar PV panel/module. Knows the connection (Series & Parallel) of Solar PV module/panel assembly. 7 TASK PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: Materials : Connectors, charge controller, screws, clips, pencil or marker. Tools : Wire- stripper, crimping tools, screwdriver sets, pliers, chisel and hand drill/hammer. Instrument : Multimeter, measuring tape with mercury level.

Charge controller fixed on the wall. a) Holes drilled securely. b) Grips inserted into the holes and flushed to surface. c) Screws inserted though the charge controller, adjusted and safely screwed on to the wall.

Knows the use of multimeter & hydrometer. Knows the battery types and government system sizing guideline. Knows the importance of identifying terminals and physical condition of the battery especially whether there is leakage of electrolyte. Knows the measuring the voltage of the battery, electrolyte level and specific gravity of electrolyte. Knows the position of battery placement.

TASK PERFORMANCE STANDARDS 6.1 6.2 6.3 Verbal and/or written instructions received and understood. Required materials, tools and measuring instruments collected. The solar PV module/panel voltage & current, load voltage & current and specific gravity & voltage of battery measured and noted. (a) Battery terminal voltage measured in between 12-13 volt and the specific gravity of the battery in between 1.240 - 1.280 (flooded lead acid battery). (b) Battery terminal voltage measured in between 12.5-13.5 volt without load & 12-12.5 for few minutes with full load (Maintenance free battery) Status of all indicators of the charge controller checked. All incoming and out going cables in the charge controller checked whether securely fixed. The battery terminals checked whether securely fixed and weather petroleum jelly/grease applied. The operation of lamps (TL, CFL & White LED), switches & power socket, DC to DC converter checked. The voltage available at the power socket & DC to DC converter checked. The solar module is securely fixed and the pole firmly erected.
