ROSELINA JOHARI BT MD KHIR INNOVATION The term innovation can be defined as something original and, as consequence, new that

"breaks in to" the market or into society. One usually associates to new phenomena that are important in some way. A definition of the term, in line with these aspects, would be the following: "An innovation is something original, new, and important - in whatever field - that breaks in to (or obtains a foothold in) a market or society Innovation is a natural process that moves the world to new levels. We have come a long way since the days before the invention of so many things that we take for granted right now. The medical breakthroughs, the modes of transportation, the communication channels, the financial tools, the manufacturing processes, the digitalized environment and the virtual entertainment scene are just some of the many advances that are reinventing our daily lives

IT is a term that is often used now referring to the current tendency going towards the movement of progress and growth which is occurring all over the world. Innovation brings the connotation of change or creating change in solving an existing problem. It moves forward from previous development which evolved from natural resources, or agricultural activity or industrial activity. Innovation becomes the central axis for those who join the present race. Therefore, innovation is not only to be understood, but also to be practiced as the working culture, or perhaps as the way of life in the future.

The innovation ecosystem involves a continuum of activities and processes.

IDEA! It is where it begins. An idea is the starting point of creativity and innovation. Without ideas there can never be anything creative or innovative. It is important that the environment encourage the growth of good ideas and able to generate a change that is of high value that is relevant to the needs and expectations of people, or customers which also be beneficial to them. So long as the idea cannot be translated into something that is of benefit to society or cannot be commercialized to bring in the profits, that idea cannot be said innovative. That is the difference between innovation and creativity.

It is clear though that without a creative idea, it is more difficult to get an innovative idea! People have said that the techniques to help in the creation of ideas are:

i. OUT-OF-THE-BOX THINKING
But how does that thinking occur? What is it? According to Genovasi the way to thinking out of the box is to use design thinking. So what is design thinking? DESIGN THINKING: In its simplest form, design thinking is a process, applicable to all walks of life, of creating new and innovative ideas and solving problems; it is not limited to a specific industry or area of expertise. It can be as effective in technology or education as it may be in services or manufacturing. It could result in new products and services for customers or improved processes and productivity gains for internal operations. (www. Genovasi.my),

Design thinking is developed by David Kelley, the founder of IDEO a global design firm. The method focuses on the three main elements of a product or solution: people, technology, and business, all of which evolve around the customer. First of all design thinking requires us to feel empathy: the ability to reach outside of ourselves and walk in someone elses shoes, to get where theyre coming from, to feel what they feel. Widespread empathy is about getting every single person in an organization to have a gut-level intuition for the people who buy their products and services (the folks who really matter). When an organization develops a shared and intuitive vibe for whats going on in the world, they are able to see new opportunities faster than their competitors. They have the courage of their convictions to take a risk with something new. And they have the passion to stick with it even if it doesnt turn out right the first time. Companies with widespread empathy can even ensure the quality of what they make when every part of the organization isnt firing on all cylinders. At Nike, people who work
2

on running shoes tend to be runners themselves. So even if the market research isnt that great, the shoes end up being awesome anyway. This isnt about market research. Its not about the Voice of the Customer. Its about strategy and culture. Imagine a place where every person has the same intuitive connection to the world -not just the folks in marketing and design, but the people who work in finance, in Human Resource and legal departments. The line between inside and outside the company starts to blur. Rather than seeing yourselves and your customers as us and them, you start to see yourselves as part of the same tribe. You start to think like your customers and feel confident enough to rely on your intuition. You find yourself anticipating what real people are up to and what theyre looking for from you. The effects can be profound. - http://www.genovasi.my/about-designthinking/innovation-starts-withempathy#sthash.xFolgqiy.dpuf

Not all ideas inspire and need to be entertained. Ideas must be inspiring. So ideas go through the process of being sieved out based on certain criteria and relevance, following which, the idea will be easily infused into something innovative. The mind does not have to work logically or go through a linear process, but rather one must have an open and inquiring mind. There are a number of other methods suggested by creative gurus such as Edward de Bono and Tony Burzan. What is clear is the more creative ideas are churned out, the more potential there are to turn them into innovations. TO INNOVATE To be called an innovation, an idea must be producible at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need. Innovation involves careful application of information, imagination and initiative in deriving greater or different values from resources, and includes all processes by which new ideas are generated and converted into useful products. Innovation must be able to be marketed as a product. And innovation is also associated with services. What is important is that it is a change which adds value or increase the quality of a process or services for the benefit of all. For business, the added value maybe in the form of profits or maybe helps in cost-saving or time-saving.
5

In business, innovation often results when ideas are applied by the company in order to further satisfy the needs and expectations of the customers. In a social context, innovation helps create new methods for creation of partnerships,, joint venturing, flexible work hours, and creation of buyers' purchasing power. Innovations are divided into two broad categories: 1. Evolutionary innovations which are on a continuous basis are brought about by many advances in technology or processes. 2. Revolutionary innovations (also called discontinuous innovations) are often disruptive and new. (http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/innovation.html#ixzz2kt7BlhWz

In the era of globalization, all organizations face with stiff competition. So each organization needs a renewal in management, invention, or creation of products and new and services with high quality. So exploration through innovation is necessary. For an organization, Innovation comprises o i. ii. iii. iv. New product Based on a process of reorganization Using the existing elements Manifest into something which is unique, facilitative, and added value which can be commercialized.

INVENTION An invention is a unique or novel device, method, composition or process. It may be an improvement upon a machine or product, or a new process for creating an object or a result. An invention that achieves a completely unique function or result may be a radical breakthrough. Such works are novel and not obvious to others skilled in the same field. Inventions oftentimes refer to the creation of products like radio, mobile phones, computers, etc..

Innovation does not necessarily result in a new product, so it is not an invention. However, it involves innovation. Thus, without innovation, it is hard to come out with an invention, so it should be encouraged. Thomas Edison for example, the well-known creator of electric light, faced a number of failures before he was successful in his creation. His famous saying is that each creation is a result of 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Some inventions can be patented. A patent legally protects the intellectual property rights of the inventor and legally recognizes that a claimed invention is actually an invention. The rules and requirements for patenting an invention vary from country to country, and the process of obtaining a patent is often expensive. Another meaning of invention is cultural invention, which is an innovative set of useful social behaviors adopted by people and passed on to others. The Invention is also an important component of artistic and design creativity. [ As innovation, the infrastructure and the ecosystem in the process of to invent must be supportive. It must accept and not punish failures during the process. The effort to invent must be encouraged continuously so new models can be invented in the name of improvement to maintain the brand names in the global market. If this is not done, the brand name will disappear. Several products from the western world have been deemed obsolete in face of Japanese products in electronics and new technology. And currently Korea has demonstrated itself as a competitor in the market. INCENTIVE One reason for the continuing innovation and invention is the incentive or encouragement as one form of motivation for those involved. It comprises factors like the spirit of competition due to pride or patriotism that one feels or perhaps it is rewards like increase in pay, position, or just monetary rewards. Monetary reward is the norm now as the money is better when profits are received from marketing or commercial activities. Thomas Edison himself did not expect his invention would start a gigantic industry which lit up the modern world.
7

Besides the monetary reward, there are non-monetary rewards which are equally pleasing, such as acknowledgment or getting the Nobel Prize for innovation. An important incentive is the allocation of funds, for the innovation that is to be produced and commercial/business schemes to market the successful innovation. However, it is expected that once innovation is made part of the working culture, and a way of life, the question of incentives will no longer be a big part of innovation. The Apple company, for example has successfully made it their culture to continually innovate by inventing products which seize the attention of customers world-wide. The effort at innovation is also targeted to certain objectives which are for humanitarian causes like the movement to nurture love the- environment thinking. That takes a lot of work at innovation. That also applies to innovative attempts by Voluntary Organizations and Non- Governmental Organization like Doctors without Borders to overcome social and health problems like AIDS, and other social ills. They use various innovative actions to further their cause without the monetary returns. THE PARK In the innovation ecosystem, the innovative idea must be nourished in a special environment with experts present so the ideas can progress effectively. For this reason, a concept called the science park or innovative park is usually provided for the purpose. As these kinds of are too expensive to build, they are usually built by the government as a form of investment that will bring back returns to spearhead socioeconomic growth. One such example would be the Silicon Valley, and now this is a model for many countries all over the world. These parks should also encourage innovation that crosses discipline, or transdisciplinary without borders. Knowledge across disciplines should come together and work towards innovation. This approach can advance the continuum of research and development to commercialization and entrepreneurship which will in turn proceed to building more parks.

PARK

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

COMMERCIALISATION

This is the new formula in providing an ecology for Innovation

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHT This is an important but complex issue. It will determine at what level the innovation is in the eyes of the world, which at the same time opens up a wide expanse to that innovation or otherwise. Excellent innovation or invention will go on to receive acknowledgment and its market just waiting. A good example is products from Apple Co. like iPad or iPhone which became the obsession for customers in every corner of the world. People lined up early morning just to buy the products. Following the success, many sides had tried to copy or reproduce the product with the aim of sharing the profits without making big investments. This will impact Apple badly. Fortunately, there is the World Intellectual Property Organization and legal policies of

Intellectual Property Rights which determines policies with regard intellectual rights for the whole world. The performance of Research and Development in Malaysia based on patents output shows an increasing trend from 2002 which is 1,492 to 2,347 in 2004, and leapt to three-fold at in 2006 at 6,749. The increase shows an increasingly positive awareness on the importance of Intellectual Property. What has to be improved, however, is the ownership of domestic patents. In Singapore the data on patents is much better as a number of applications for patents that have been approved came from Singaporean citizens themselves or expatriates working in Singapore. This gives Singapore a good image internationally. A lot more research grants should be offered to increase Research and Development. Research outputs have to be commercialized.

Innovation is synonymous with risk-taking and organizations that create revolutionary products or technologies take on the greatest risk because they create new markets. Imitators take less risk because they will start with an innovator's product and take a more effective approach. Examples are IBM with its PC against Apple Computer, Compaq with its cheaper PC's against IBM, and Dell with its still-cheaper clones against Compaq.

Innovation differs from invention in that innovation refers to the use of a better and, as a result, novel idea or method, whereas invention refers more directly to the creation of the idea or method itself.

WHY MALAYSIA NEEDS TO INNOVATE

Malaysia realizes that it has to change the way it has been doing things in business, government, academia and society itself. The country faces stiff competition from other developing countries and it is also facing the inevitable depletion of the natural resources that have been contributing significantly to its economy. The advantages that it has been enjoying based on old economic models are becoming unsustainable, so it must look at new key ingredients to take the country to the next level. Innovation: This is why the government has made Innovation and Transformation as the key thrusts in its way forward. Through bodies such as Agensi Inovasi Malaysia, the government is revamping the necessary elements of innovation to ensure that all groups in society, including academia, industry, the rakyat and government itself, collaborate and move in the same direction. Funding: To enable innovators to get their creations to the market, the government is making funding more accessible and streamlined. There is more emphasis on grants and loans given with more accountability. It is introducing innovative thinking skills in the education system to produce an innovative workforce that can satisfy future industry needs Collaboration: Government is also fostering more collaboration between businesses and the research community to encourage industry-driven innovations that create wealth for all the players as well as the nation. Strategies are being formulated for wealth creation and societal benefits activities which have their origin in individual creativity skill and talent and which have the potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property - is a definition of the creative industries which has remained For the first time it brings those industry sectors, those enterprises and those people who are creative in this broad sense, right in to that mainstream of economic calculation and activity. Secondly, that it brings about a wide convergence of sectors, which have not typically been seen as having a lot to do with each other in most policy frameworks. So a wide convergence of sectors. Thirdly, there is a continuum that establishes a connection from non-commercial arts through to highly commercial software, ICT, games sectors. This continuum from the non-commercial to the commercial is a crucial achievement of this template. . Korea is a country that has built its economy on very strong corporative linkages between government and big business. Its not unsurprising that its approach to creative industries has seen major investment in big infrastructure. The creative city development in Seoul is an attempt to bring together very large government and corporate infrastructure development and to construct a large cluster of related creative industries in a new precinct in and around Seoul.
11

Malaysia will continue focusing on innovation-driven investment to spur economic growth Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said. He said innovative-centric strategies would help the government in realising its vision to turn the country into a developed nation with an advanced economy, so the government has adopted a new strategy based on knowledge and innovation-driven investment. Najib has also called for civil servants to be innovative in delivering their services. "Innovation is not limited to or monopolised by groups working in scientific labs but should also be embraced by civil servants as well as those in the private sector.

Najib said the government remained committed to making innovation an important component of economic policy. "When we speak of an innovation-centric economy, we refer to an ecosystem that is supportive, vibrant and inclusive. "It is an environment that empowers men or women on the street to push the boundaries of their abilities and achievements and influence socio-economic development of their immediate and extended community." Innovation is a global phenomenon and innovation leaders are found across the world. There is also growing relevance and need for a global perspective in understanding the process and premise of innovation. Malaysia realizes that innovation is a multistakeholder effort that involves governments as well as the private sector in strengthening research and development efforts and human resource, as well as harnessing technology."

One of the sectors of the creative industries is the animation industry. In Malaysia, the animation industry is also known as creative content industry and creative multimedia industry. The creative multimedia industry merges technology and arts. The sectors in this industry range from advertising, animation to games, publishing and interactive media. The Innovation Continuum being: IDEATION CONCEPTS + CREATIVITY INVENTIONS + IP INNOVATION LEADING TO TRANSFORMATION According to Prof Dato Kamaruddins lecture notes, the creative industries are fast becoming an important income generator for a nations economy. According to a report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the creative industries generate income and job opportunities. The UNCTAD has encouraged developing countries to diversify their economies and develop their creative industries which are one of the most dynamic sectors of the world. Creative Industries include: Acting

According to his lecture notes too, the Malaysian creative industries have also shown great potential as an important sector for the nations economy. The Malaysian government has acknowledged the importance of the creative industries to the nations economy. The Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture has initiated the Creative Industries Conference in March 2009 to address the absence of clear coordination and policies regarding the development of the nations creative industries. The National Creative Industries Policy was drafted to lay out the basic principles of the development of the creative industries. The government is expected to spend RM55.5 million for several short-term catalyst projects in effort to enhance the development of the industries. These projects are projected to generate RM958 million to the industry and 20,354 workers in 2020 One of the sectors of the creative industries is the animation industry. An innovative approach Designers ask questions like how do we make something beautiful and usable? How does it mechanically go together? How do we reflect the brand? Leaders ask questions such as, What are we trying to achieve and why? How do we accomplish our goals? What people and resources do we need to make it happen? By weaving together the leadership process with the design process, Continuum has identified six innovative thinking skills. Using these skills, organizations are able to create something that is useful and desirable whether its a breakthrough technology, a valuable service or a fresh solution to an old problem. Each of these skills shifts your understanding of a situation and opens the door for new approaches and solutions Innovation leads to transformation Transformation requires a change of culture. It demands an honest audit of our priorities and how weve been doing things, and the courage to decide that they must be improved, overhauled or even completely eliminated. It demands the humility and willingness to reduce the power-distance in our businesses, government bodies, associations and even our family units good ideas and constructive opinions can come from all levels in an organisation. The dynamics among every member of our society has to encourage, not stifle views. That is the only way to reap the innovation potential from our population. Only when the spirit of change, transformation and innovation is alive in the masses would we have a chance at achieving our dreams of becoming an Innovation Nation by 2020.

INNOVATION IN THE CREATIVE ARTS CREATIVITY IS THE PROCESS OF GATHERING AND GENERATING NEW IDEAS. Creativity may be defined as idea generation. Being creative is to be able to generate or to come up with ideas. Or even to gather ideas. The new idea can be simple or it can be complex. When a child thinks of an idea, even if it is a naughty one, he is being creative. Similarly, when a scientist seizes on an idea, he is exercising creativity. Creativity is hence a process, or a thinking process to be exact. Creativity comes from the word create. What is created or generated is the idea. INNOVATION IS CREATIVITY IMPLEMENTED. Innovation, on the other hand, can be described as creativity implemented. Innovation is putting the idea into practice. While creativity is a thinking process, innovation is a productive process. Innovation adds value to the idea, which otherwise remains as a mere idea. If the idea is likened to a seed, then innovation is the plant that results from planting and nurturing the seed. Who can innovate? Who can be creative? The truth is . . . CREATIVITY and INNOVATION is for ALL. Creativity and innovation can be embraced and practiced by just about anyone, from students to teachers, from employers to employees, from entrepreneurs to careerminded people. It is for both young and old, male and female, urban or rural. In other words, creativity and innovation is for ALL. What areas can I innovate in? Yet another fact is . . . INNOVATION covers all aspects of doing things. Yet another fact is that innovation is not just about making new and better products. Innovation is much more extensive than it is often given credit for. Innovation encompasses all aspects of doing things. Although it is perhaps most evident in Products, but it can also be manifested as powerfully in Processes, Systems, Services, Methods and Models. The aim:

"To Produce a Superb Malaysia!".

16

Creativity is a phenomenon whereby something new and valuable is created (such as an idea, a joke, a literary work, a painting or musical composition, a solution, an invention etc.). The range of scholarly interest in creativity includes a multitude of definitions and approaches involving several disciplines; psychology, cognitive science, education, philosophy (particularly philosophy of science), technology, theology, sociology, linguistics, business studies, and economics, taking in the relationship between creativity and general intelligence, mental and neurological processes associated with creativity, the relationships between personality type and creative ability and between creativity and mental health, the potential for fostering creativity through education and training, especially as augmented by technology, and the application of creative resources to improve the effectiveness of learning and teaching processes. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia STAR WARS IN WAYANG KULIT A promising direction for research in this area is to explore multiple-arts experiences, where people are engaged in more than one art form. An example of innovation in the creative arts is when a Malaysian designer presented Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in the form of a wayang kulit (shadow puppets). The designer goes by the name Tintoy Chuo and he is the founder of ActionTintoy Studio, specialising in character design. The whole idea of presenting Star Wars using shadow puppets came about when Tintoy Chuo got the idea to introduce the practically extinct form of entertainment (shadow puppets, not Star Wars) to todays generation. He chose to fuse it with Star Wars because he figured it would have a better chance of capturing peoples attention and besides he loves Star Wars. He and his friend Take Huat painstakingly carved out two characters in the style of a wayang kulit puppet and of course those characters had to be Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.

MY PROJECT FOR PhD (TOWARDS INNOVATION IN THE ARTS THROUGH MUSICAL THEATRE FOR THE YOUNG) TITLE: CONNECTING COMMUNITIES THROUGH MUSICAL THEATRE FOR THE YOUNG USING FOLKLORE

I believe in the idea that the arts can inspire creative, courageous and confident young people wherever they are and whatever they want to be. I too believe that the arts have the power to transform lives, enrich communities and ultimately impact upon the future of our nation. I want to through my theatre performance inspire and nurture imagination, confidence and creativity in young people and connect our young in the urban area with the community in another corner of the country. I will focus on creating a story through a process of discovering, and sharing the folklore of a community, storytelling, in the context of play, music and dance, finishing with a theatrical performance. MY PROCESS: DESIGN THINKING

EMPATHY - Learning about the audience I am designing the musical for. Malaysia as a nation is divided into communities of race, religion, culture, gender, language and so on although we are called Malaysians. We are diverse in many ways. We live in different places, have different kinds of jobs, and go to different schools. We have a variety of ethnic backgrounds and religious beliefs. And we speak many different languages and differ in our thoughts and feelings This kind of differentiation need not be negative. We need only to recognize the varieties of cultures, languages, and that there are ways of belonging. Given the deep levels of division and the diversity that exist within Malaysian society, theatre can play an important part in discussing, negotiating and bridging difference. Because performance is both a physical and verbal art form, it is able to make the experience concrete and embody the issues of difference in a very real way. Performance can be experienced as a group, thus creating a space of sharing.

20

This will be the process of creating theatre where the community speaks, rather than be spoken about. I am going to engage with the young and old in a community in hearing their stories, and then creating performances. I want to give them a voice and let this voice be heard by the urban young.

DEFINE - Redefining and focusing my question based on my insights from the

empathy stage From the stories and materials collected from the community, my script will be redefined and focused. The point here is that not only I am allowing the community to speak, but I am also going to provide them with an audience that will listen to them. I will create a space in which the participants can express themselves in a creative way, and in an ecosystem that will be supportive and where everyones voices will be heard.

IDEATE

Brainstorming and coming up with creative solutions

Will do a needs analysis here, brainstorming with experts in the field of theatre for the young, and with stage technicians and managers to come up with creative solutions towards performance.

PROTOTYPE - Returning to your original user group

-Building a representation of one or more of your ideas to show to others

The theatre will root itself in the community so that it can continue to tell its own stories; for this to happen there will be a process of training and transference of skills. I will have performances at two sites, in the community itself and bringing some of the youths from the community to perform their stories and dance in the city of Kuala Lumpur.

TEST
.

The point of the performance is to find ways to build understanding and deepen respect among youth from different cultural backgrounds. I hope to make this a sustainable project of connectivity among these communities through a relevant project that an authority can fund.

21

THE SCRIPTS FRAMEWORK i. The musical theatre for the young will carry the themes of environment respect and diversity and animal protection.

The essence of Islamic teaching is that the entire universe is Allah's creation. Allah makes the waters flows upon the earth, upholds the heavens, makes the rain fall and keeps the boundaries between day and night. It is Allah who created the plants and the animals in their pairs and gave them the means to multiply. Then Allah created mankind - a very special creation because mankind alone was created with reason and the power to think and even the means to turn against his Creator. Mankind has the potential to acquire a status higher than that of the angels or sink lower than the lowest of the beasts. Mankind is special, a very particular creation of Allah. But still we are Allah's creation and we can only properly understand ourselves when we recognise that our proper condition is one of submission to Allah who made us. Have you not seen that God is glorified by all in the heavens and on the earth such as the birds with wings outspread? Each knows its worship and glorification, and God is aware of what they do. (Quran 24:41) The Quran talks about the universe and its enormous diversity and variety of form and function. Its various elements fulfill human welfare. This is the essence of the play. Man is part of this universe, the elements of which are complementary to one another in an integrated whole indeed, man is a distinct part of the universe and it has a special position among its other parts. The relation between man and the universe, as defined and clarified in the Glorious Quran and the Prophetic teachings, is as follows: A relationship consideration and contemplation of the universe and what it contains. A relationship of sustainable utilization, development, and employment for mans benefit and for the fulfillment of his interests.

A relationship of care and nurture for mans good works are not limited to the benefit of the human species, but rather extent to the benefit of all created. Environment and the ecosystem are an important entity which has to be carefully cared for to ensure a sustainable life for this generation and for future generations.

22

ii. I am also using folklore: FOLKLORE DEFINITION: Since the 1960's and 70's folklore has been defined as "artistic communication in small groups" (Ben-Amos 1972) or "the study of human creativity in its own context" (Glassie, 1993)

Art made with an awareness of and a connection to tradition and community Tradition & folklore = dynamic processes connected to community & creativity

Folklore study is important as it gives us a privilege to learn about our own culture and society. As the world is becoming a global village with people of different nationalities trotting across the globe and inhabiting in different parts of the world, the need for folklore study is coming to be more significant as this will be the only means to retain our own roots, culture and sense of belongingness to a certain community. Folklore gives an impression of collectiveness of the shared culture. The problems and anxieties of any community will reflect on the riddles and folklores. In some communities, an act of riddle is done during death or marriage to minimize the tensions of someone's departure.

FOLKLORE resonates locally and globally

Fundamentally appealing because it typically displays the best of our humanity Shows the strengths of our community Binds us to traditions while helping to shape our future Greatest thing that folklore teaches us is our common humanity We are all the folk
