The Cloud-Based Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Market 2013-2023

7. Expert Opinion
7.1 Dizzion
The following interview was conducted in November 2013. Visiongain would like to thank Manny Ladis, SVP of Sales and Marketing at Dizzion for participation in this interview.

7.1.1 Dizzion Company Background & Cloud-Based VDI Offerings

Visiongain: Please give us a little background about your company and your cloud-based Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) offerings.

Manny Ladis: Dizzion is a cloud service provider that has created a scalable platform designed to provide hosted virtual desktops with a superior user experience to the small and medium size business (SMB) market. Dizzion is exploiting that market with a combination of: (i) a highperformance offering, (ii) attractive pricing driven by a proprietary architecture that dramatically lowers server and storage capital requirements and (iii) flexible and customizable customer configurations. Dizzion provides multi-tenant cloud and on-premise delivery options based on the best solution fit for the customer.

7.1.2 Key Trends & Developments in the Cloud-Based VDI Market

Visiongain: What would you say are the key trends and recent developments in the cloudbased Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) ecosystem and why?

Manny Ladis: Successfully deploying virtual desktop infrastructures has been limited by connection speeds and options between the server and users, so historically full-time virtual desktops have been used primarily within single-office local area networks or corporate wide area networks. As broadband connections and connectivity speeds have become ubiquitous, adoption of virtual desktops from remote locations has increased. Concurrent with increases in connection options and speeds, workforces have become more mobile, and additional types of devices including tablets and smartphones have become mainstream in businesses. The intersection of these three market trends, combined with economic pressure on IT departments to manage costs, have led to the growth of the desktop virtualization market.

Addresses fluctuating workload challenges through a varying balance of processing, memory, I/O, and internal storage resources. Create a single, highly available management domain with network connectivity and administrative capabilities that support all attached blades and chassis. Manages all system components and configurations through a unified, policy-driven extensible architecture. Simplify, enhance, and centralize I/O management while ensuring policy coherency and consistent network visibility.

8.3 Citrix
Founded by former IBM developer Ed Iacobucci in 1989, Citrix is one of the oldest providers in the desktop virtualisation market. From its inception, Citrix licensed Microsofts OS/2 source code, laying the foundation for a partnership that would hold through 2012.

See Table 8.2 for a timeline of Microsoft/Citrix collaborative efforts and projects.

Table 8.2 Microsoft, Selected Corporate Acquisition and Partnership Timeline 20062012
1989 Citrix licenses the OS/2 source code, developed jointly by Microsoft and IBM. Broadly, this allowed compatibility with the MS-DOS environment and early iterations of the Windows OS. Having obtained a source code license to Microsoft Windows NT 3.51, Citrix shipped a multi-user version of the OS with remote access capabilities rebranded as WinFrame. It targeted large enterprise 1995 clients. The same year, Citrix also release a repackaged version of Windows 95, which included Citrix WinFrame Client. 1996 Release of Windows NT 4.0 and Windows Terminal Server Edition. Microsoft and Citrix develop tighter technology integration to facilitate IT management of both 2009 distributed and centrally-hosted applications using Citrix XenApp and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager. Expansion of XenApp support for Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) to enable self-service
